The last minute MMP

The mixed blessing of Long Island is we always get buffered from the worst of a lot of storms. But we we do get hit, we get hit hard.
No snow yet (as of half an hour ago) - I’m lacing up the new sneakers with the good treads (the new boots didn’t fit right - they’re going back)

Just back from shovelling the driveway (again). Husband on the way home–I’ve now done the driveway twice…anything else that needs doing is on him.

I still love it and all, but I have a bad case of windburn on my face, despite the Vaseline I put on, prior to going out. I want chocolate, but am too tired to make anything…damn.

Off to bed soon, after a hot bath and bad TV. Forget homework tonight.

It is still snowing, BTW. #2 son and I took a ruler out (because I can’t find the yardstick), and we have 3", 9" and everything in between, so who knows how much we really ahve.

I consider this a blizzard. anyone else?

Snow? That’s the white stuff you get in the car and drive for a couple of hours to play in, isn’t it? Seriously, when I get too cold, I have a hard time breathing. I’ll take my chances with the Big One.

I finally bought a computer desk and chair today. It took 2 hours and much #@$*&(! to get everything assembled. Now I need to move the computer into the living room and on to the desk and I’ll be (somewhat) civilized. The chair is very comfy, although I noticed when I was putting it together that I’m only 3 pounds under its rated weight.

Not to mention that Russian Orthodox don’t genuflect, they do a full out prostration. Also only the pregnant, very ill and elderly are allowed to sit, the rest of the congregation stands for the entire service. Also married women and women with children still must cover their heads.

Lots of mundane and pointless happening here, but nothing very interesting. I found out that the wife of the skipper who hadn’t paid skiffman for the cod trip from the first part of January is from Marysville, Wa. which is where I graduated high school from. Her husband is from Lynnwood, Wa. which is between Seattle and Marysville. Woohoo, small world. The most interesting connection I have made like this is the (new) wife of the guy who convinced me to move up here to begin with is from Snohomish, Wa. which was our rival school in sports. She and I are the same age, we graduated the same year, while we didn’t know each other then, back in the day we were at the same games, dances and parties! A lot of Washingtonians end up here, I think in large part because all the Californians who moved north to Seattle were making us crazy! (Not that any California Dopers, specifically MMP’ers would fit in that category!)

I am hungry, and even have an I’m hungry headache. Today is kid’s choice, so hot dogs and boxed mac 'n cheese it is. For tomorrow I have a chicken thawed, although I’m not sure what I will do with it. I have apples to make a pie out of, but someone has given me a craving for peach cobbler, and now I have a dilemma!

On the weather front it hit 40 degrees F and the sun was out all day. I see there are some bulbs showing their tips already, and I am vacillating between planting the last of the bulbs now and waiting for another six weeks.

I have been wondering about Ellen’s colorful/uncolorful, curiously bolded/unbolded nick, and rue has put that mystery to rest. Now if I can only force my brain to learn some more code…

Oh, and my eyes are brown too, are brown eyes special?

And for da bear and others who don’t like 'em, I have this link for you. Marion lives just down the road from me, and she has a gardening column in our local news paper. little green balls of death

Jahdra you should feel good about your desk assembly, it took skiffman 14 hours to assemble mine!

Hugs, encouragement, sympathy, and yays wherever appropriate.

Ollos verdes son traidores,
azules son mentideiros,
os negros i acastañados
son buenos e verdadeiros.

Green eyes are traitors,
blue ones are liars,
black and brown
are good and true.

You were askin’? (For our Spanish speakers, it’s Asturiano)

Lilbro had an interview last Friday. He’s not looking for a job, but he got a call from an agency that had his resume and, since it was for a multinational, he got “career plan!” on his mind and decided to have the interview. The intahviu was in English, over the phone. When they asked him why he was looking for a job bein’ employed and all, he said “I’m not, but it being a multinational and all, it sounds like a place where I could grow without having to change employers. You know, career plans and that.” When they asked whether he was practicing his English he said no, which is the truth.

The HR manager for that company is one of Mom’s neighbors; the first thing I told him when he told me the company name was “have you spoken with him?” It was the first thing Mom said, too. This HR guy is the one who told me, years ago, that his company had forbidden them from hiring locals and women. He’d been very happy to get 45% women among the initial employees, but then he got a call from the Yiú Es saying “hey, are all these Marias female?” “yep!” “WHAT! You shouldn’t hire women!” “Eh… we shouldn’t?”

I don’t know whether they’ve changed those policies, though. Maybe in other places it’s better to hire “outsiders”, but in Spain and in the provinces, outsiders don’t last.

I am up … at 3 AM - mostly because I can hear the sleet or freezing rain pummeling my bedroom window! I’m really dreading what it will be like in the morning (just a few hours from now  ) The weather is truly bizarre when the mid-Atlantic is getting sleet and freezing rain and it’s 40 degrees F on Kodiak Island Alaska (no offense, Kaiwik!)–not that I’m wishing this stuff on Alaska, mind you.

Guess I’d best try to get some rest; I’ll be up early, although I probably won’t try to go in until later in the morning. Take care, everyone in the mid-Atlantic, and especially further north–it’s going to be worst in the northeast.

Morning each! It’s going to be very wet over here today, or so the weather lady promises. I don’t mind, I’m in the office and I’ve got tea! And leftover curry for lunch! What more could I possibly want?

Yesterday I got the electricity company sorted out, they apologised profusely and gave me a shiny new account all of my own. Now all I need to do is wait for the mysterious Miss Dolly to show up and try getting a meter reading from our house!

Then I got the National Grid people sorted out, they have all the information they need so they can stop telling me I don’t have a gas meter when I know I’ve got one. Silly people. They should know better than to say stoopid things like that.

Best news of all, Shadow hasn’t pee’d or pooped anywhere in the house apart from his litter tray for two days! Woo hoo! He’s off to the vet’s tonight to have his second lot of vaccinations and to have his stitches out so hopefully that’s going to be the last vet’s trip for a while. Next one will be to have his microchip done, but I think I’ll let him settle a bit more before we do that.

Last night I did all my study reading so I’m feeling quite virtuous, I still have some coursework to do but that’s on the calendar for either Thursday or Friday. Which means I have all weekend free to sort out our costumes for the Dead Rat Ball.

Morning. It’s a balmy 34 degrees Amurikin this morning. We won the game last night. For those of you with sweet baboos,

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!

I read that as “baboons”. I need more tea.

“If you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with”

CanineServant, those would be the people I have to work with!

Lovable all of them, I’m sure.

Interesting poem, Nava. Sounds like I might be safe. Did wonder about ollos Also, it amazes me how many companies make a big deal about complying with fair hiring policies in the U.S. but blatantly follow completely different policies elsewhere. Not sure how it helps them.

I’m awake and, unlike the rest of Columbus, have to go to work on time. So I guess I should get ready.

{Happy Valentine’s Day!!!{

Well, we have a weather delay, but they didn’t )(%^&^ announce it until 6:50 and we have hundreds of employees with a 7:00 a.m. start time. GRRRRRR Of course, I have 3 conscientious employees who are already at work, unnecessarily. Did I mention GRRRRR?

One of my co-workers got this lovely Valentine from a friend:

Roses are red
This bullet is lead
If you don’t take me back
I’ll shoot you in the head

Happy Valentine’s Day, and happy Mr. Lissar’s birthday.
We have snow! We have lots of snow! Yay!

well, on this lovely snowly, slushy, icy, Valentines morning, my back is no better and my head is all stuffed up

BooFae - your National Grid is trying to take over our power company here on the Guylandt

I took doughnut holes to work yesterday. I was roudly cursed by people who wre stuffing their faces.

I’m sorry, rosie. :frowning:

Many happies to Mr Lisslar - did you buy him flowers, LiLi?

Rosie - sorry to hear you’re still feeling bad. I’ll ask Ophie to pedal for some good vibes for you.

If our National Grid is trying to buy out your power company, be very afraid! Pretty soon they’ll start telling you that you’ve had your meter removed and they’ll be getting a JP to sign a warrant for forced entry to your house. Luckily 'im indoors is going to be at home armed only with a video camera when they’re supposed to be calling on us.
