The moment all you MADs have been waiting for... Gettysdope II!

Yeah, IANAGO (…Gettysdope Organizer), but I’m pretty sure the 23rd is The Date. Dances, Robyn, could someone who is a GO pls. confirm?

Here’s my latest inspiration – a book exchange. We all bring a book or two or three that seem like Doper reading fodder. I’m currently reading Freedom and Necessity, a book recommended by some Doper in some thread or other, and enjoying it a lot. There’s no obvious person amongst my reading pals IRL to pass it on to, but I feel like I should pass it on to someone. Why not bring it to Gettysburg and let the next owner pick it out him/herself?

Yes, it is set for July 23. dances has the pavilion arranged for and confirmed and permitted, and whatever else that needs.

A book exchange sounds like a hell of a an idea. I’ve got a handful of required reading books that I have no use for and can’t sell back. Apparently, there is a limited demand for books about Soviet history, but a history-minded Doper might find them fascinating.

If anyone has any questions, e-mail gettysdope@yahoo.com. I’ve been checking it every few days, so be patient, but questions will be answered. Heck, if you haven’t e-mailed yet, please do so.

We did hot dogs last year – which some ate toppe with the numerous chili offerings, and some just ate plain. That seemed to work pretty well. Not as well as Hermit’s chicken, of course. 'Cause that was excellent chicken.

Hmm… I may have to try to make it…

Could ya be a tad more definite Candid?

Yes, the 23rd is nailed down-I spent about 10 minutes with the nice elderly lady at the Borough Parks & Rec dept. and she is completely befunkled. You need to give them a name for your group to put on the pavilion use permit sign, so I told her, “Cecil Adams.” Then, when I gave her my check, in the memo area, I scribbled SDMB Fest. Since my name IRL isn’t Cecil Adams, it had her all confusified and she started asking me who he is-I should have told her that he’s an old drinking buddy of William Penn’s, and an early pioneer of the area, after all, Gettysburg is the seat of Adams County. Figuring I’d get caught in that fib, I didn’t go there. :stuck_out_tongue:

AFAIK, I’m in, unless they switch my schedule on me at work, in which case I will beat somebody up and come anyways. I’m a horrid cook, (my cookies last year were far too mediocre for the amount of effort involved) so how about I just bring a buttload of paper plates and plasticware?

Color Intaglio, the Tranquilizers, and I, as probables - 70% likely.

I can reprise the chili I made for DAve and Ginger’s party, and maybe bring a true Mexican chili or a white chili too.

supervenusfreak (the cook of the family) is bringing a vegetarian pasta salad (no prosciutto!) and baked sugary goodness. And probably some Splenda-sweetened stuff for the weight-conscious.

I’m tempted to brew sun tea, if only so I can crouch over the pitcher all day and growl at people reaching for it…

Last year, it was even more fun. I could hear her raise an eyebrow when I dropped the name “Straight Dope Message Board”. I spent my ten minutes explaining to her that it’s “dope” as in information, not “dope” as in, well, “dope”.

She is a very nice lady, though.

Due to yet new health problems, I am up in the air as to whether or not I can make it. I’ll know better in a few weeks, but for now, I suppose I had better bow out…

:frowning:

Considering the amount of chili that is going to be there, I think I will pack some Beano too. As for the other comment, no worries folks. He may growl, but he is much better at sharing…

Now where’s the fun in that? All we’d need is a Robert Tilton video, and we could supply the soundtrack. :stuck_out_tongue:

You don’t have to sleep in the same bed with him that night!

Beano. Definitely.

Yeppers-July 23rd is only a month away. Let’s fill in the blanks. Here’s the update based on thread scanning-corrections always welcome.

For those who need directions, worry not. The directions page from last year will be posted when we draw closer to the event, and for anyone who would like to purchase something nearby, there are two markets available-one a few blocks, and another a few miles away.

My cell phone number will be provided to anyone who emails to request same: danceswithcats@att.net

Anyone who plans on staying over should make haste to book a room. Email the above addy if you’d like help with that-distance from event, and other good stuff.

Also, twickster has added book exchange to the mix. Bring texts you’d like to see in the home of another doper.

Put me down for hot dogs and burgers. I’ve also got a charcoal grill or two I can bring if needed.

I might have one more person joining us and I’ll be bringing along some board games, etc. I’ll even throw in Settlers of Cataan, if anyone’s interested.

At what time does this shindig get started? If it’s not too early, I’ll try to be on time this year. I remember that last year I couldn’t find things because there was no rhyme or reason to how things were set up, if you could even call it a set-up. I’ll try to impose some order on the food tables if nobody minds.

I know that Ben’s already bringing some but I think I’ll try my hand at Gazpacho this year. More is a good thing!

Is everyone bring their own drinks and/or drinks to share? What is the official policy on alcohol?

The official policy is that the park doesn’t allow it. IMHO, this is to keep people from getting wasted and trashing the place, so I didn’t feel too bad about bending the rules a little last year, because even if I do get wasted (which would be very unusual for me), trashing things is not my style.

Count Verrain and I among the coming (We’re putting off our move until after so we can see lots of people one last time before we go). As for what we’re bringing… I still need to think about that. I’m trying to figure out if I can make something, yet still manage to not have to keep anything dishes/pots and pans/etc out of the packing to do so.

Anita wants to be a Food Mod, eh? Regarding time, I plan to be there ~10 just to make sure everything is covered. Folks can show up whenever they desire after that. Soda and tea, etc. is community, except when jayjay growls at you.
