The "My bumpy transition into adulthood" MMP - and how was yours?

Somebody must not love somebody anymore because the mountains are crumbling…

First we had the rockslide on 40. Now there’s another slide on 64, another slide in Madson County, and Tennessee decided now would be a great time to work on the bridges on the main detour route around the first rockslide. Oy.

I finally got my thesis printed. Tomorrow morning I need to call ECU and find out who to send it to and what to do with my personal copy (which has to go to the library and costs $32 ) and then I have to go back to Office Despot to make copies of The Signature Page and then I can mail the whole thing out.

I defended my thesis in July. This should have been done months ago. I crown myself Queen of Procrastination.

One of the pieces we have to translate looks like it’s actually a (pretty bad) translation from English. Now, some of the professors claim that “there ain’t such a thing as a bad translation” (sure hon, let me look up the threads about bad sex), but if I’m guessing right, the factual errors contained in our version are the translator’s fault. There’s things like a line which looks like an “out of” was translated word-by-word, so that the text we have says “outside.” Aaaaaaaargh!

This reminds me of my two favorite (apocryphal, of course) re-translations:

“The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” -> unspecified (:D) translation to Russian -> translates back to English as “The Vodka is great, but the steak is lousy.”

“Out of sight, out of mind” -> Back and forth to and from the language of your choice -> “Blind nutcase.”

Morning, everybody!!

:Vrrrroooooommmmmmmmmm:

I have to email 420 students something but they have to be sent individual emails…and will my computer do that as a mail-merge thingie? No, it will not. Bah!

Yesterday ended well, I am now fully fire-safety trained and have been cleared by the doc at the hospital as he said my eye’s all better now and I can stop using the drops. His name is Mr Chapitti. I very nearly called him Mr Chapatti…could have been quite embarrassing.

So I got home to find we’d still got hot water and I have a lovely soak in the bath (with a cup of tea and a good book), then later we went to the pub for some beerverages.

Tonight my carpenter friend is coming to look at a couple of jobs I want him to do which will make the scabby bathroom look a bit nicer. Busy, busy, busy!

I like this one better than the original…

Day 2 of the Nor’easter From Hell. It took me 90 minutes to do my 55 minute commute, only to find out reporting in is optional for non-essential personnel. :grumble:

My feet are wet, because I stopped to check on a guy who put his Jeep into a ditch, and the water was up to my ankles. At least I had the foresight to dress for potential trouble instead of the normal office wear; I had on shitkickers instead of my good shoes.

Up, caffeinated, off to blurf.

Up, caffeinated…

heading back down soon.

Urg.

Work is The Shit today :frowning:

I really really really hate this job and the company pretty much told me to Fuck Off recently when I asked after I had served my agreed year if they would move me or my husband so we can be together (especially when I see us in this personnel job I that we bend over backwards to keep poor performing less experienced people together) so we (Hubby and I) have decided I will quit and go to the US and get my Greencard but I found out today under my French contract I have to give 90 days notice. Shit.

Oh well 7 days til I see my Hubby again

Where are you from, ems? Hubby is American?

Blurfing and caffeinating in progress.

More trouble getting to sleep last night. Looks like I’m going to have to get to bed earlier and let the PVR tape the shows I wanted to watch; I’m gonna have hours of shows to catch up on this weekend. I haven’t even had a chance to watch the second episode of V yet!

On the other hand we picked up a couple more presents for Christmas. We weren’t going to pick up one of them, but the wife’s mother was threatening either to borrow our electric roaster or go out and buy one, so she had to tell her we already got her one for Christmas. So we had to go out and get her something else that she didn’t know about, and ended up getting her an electric, heated two-dish serving tray that keeps food warm. So I wrapped 'em last night and picked up some gift tags because we had none.

And yes, there is such a thing as bad translation. All you have to do is read an authentic Chinese restaurant menu that’s been machine-translated (or poorly human-translated) into English. It’ll really make you wonder what all that food is doing with each other when the chef isn’t looking.

Off to do some actual work…

I luuuurved Up. SQUIRRELL!!!

So I called again this morning to make and endo appointment and they took down a bunch of information and are going to mail me a packet to fill out and return and THEN I get to make an appointment. Jeesh! Glad I don’t need a cardiologist.

ems, hubby will make it all better.

boofae, is all that individual e-mailing because of spam filters?

spaz, I think I saw a video of one of those slides. Yikes!

So anyway, no layoffs yet. I think the rumor-monger is someone who is deathly afraid they are coming. (No, not me…another old broad.)

Flash Forward on TV tonight.

Tupug

ETA: First on Four! Whoot!!!

Good morning my pretties!

It’s a cold, wintery day here. I’m still missing the warmth and sunshine from last week. Oh well.

ems, I’m glad hubby will be there shortly for you. Your company sucks balls.

I have craploads of stuff to do today, but remembered this morning I’m supposed to leave early for a student-led conference for my son. Sigh…I set this up over a month ago and completely forgot about it.

Of course, I’m the only one here. It figures. I have to leave early on Monday too, for my colposcopy.

There isn’t too much else going on here. I think this weekend will be a quiet weekend, although we may go and see 2012. Mr. Taters wants to see it.

I guess I should quit putting off the inevitable and get back to work. I’ve already put out three reports…go me.

It shouldn’t be, because all the students have dedicated uni email addresses. I’ve done the entire thing as an email-merge but it didn’t work and all it does is give me an apparently merged email at the end but no facility to send it. Maybe I’m doing something wrong, but it’s not helping me much.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmms - I don’t blame you for quitting, sounds like your company doesn’t care enough about you. You’ll be pleased to spend more time with Mr Ems though.

'im indoors is looking for a new contract now but he says the only things he can find so far are in Australia. Hmmm…

Up made me bawl like a baby.

It had a lot to do with the fact that I went through a month-long streak of watching sad movies that involved the death of a lifelong love (Ghost and PS I Love You, I’m looking at you) plus the unexpected death of a friend who was more-or-less The Boy’s age. I was a bit of a basket case (but I’m all better now, I promise).

mmmmmmmmmm, sorry to hear about the work-related frustrations. Unfortunately, the HR seems to be turning into more and more of an oxymoron in most companies… what company in their right mind thinks it’s okay to keep spouses in two entirely different countries long-term with no attempts to resolve the situation? Ugh. Glad there’s a spousal visit coming up soon, though.

Almost lunchtime. Yay! It’s chilly outside, but at least the sun is shining… I’ll take what I can get.

Zooming by…

I do have to say that we have had some spectacular weather of late. Sunny, with highs in the mid 70’s and lows in the 50’s. Puuuurrrrfect! November in Southern Texas is wonderful! It’s worth the horrible summer to get to days like these.

Back to the grind… ugh.

Thanks everyone. I got a little frustrated today - I got forced into this job which at the time was a good thing as the company pretty much laid of most of the none USA people in the US so at the time they at least tried to do something for me to keep me. I agreed to 1 year which is up in 18 days but my awesome lady boss just got moved and my new evil man boss told me no way. It kills me when I am currently handling one of these dual career moves for a couple - she falls under me due to her level in the company and to be frank she is really not doing a good job but we are moving her with her husband as he works for a different segment who actually give a shit about their people unlike the bit I work for.

I don’t belive in ultimatums but man this bites the big one so I this close to giving them one - it seems to work for the rest of the company.

Nava I am a Brit so the Greencard app should be straight forward but with the job market being as it is I really can’t afford to be out of work for long as I am the major breadwinner - hubby needs to be employed as he has to pay child support and pay for health insurance for his 2 girls from his first marriage. And a 90 days notice period sucks

7 days…7 days…7 days

Lutefisk withdrawal qualify?

So, is it cruel not to let my kid drink as much water as he wants, if it means not having to change him (and his sleeper, and his sheets) in the middle of the night? I don’t think he’s got diabetes suddenly, I think he just thinks he’s living in the Gobi Desert or something. We’re up to 8-10 cups of liquid per 24 hours. It’s ridiculous.
I decided trying to roll the caramel was too heartbreaking, and instead am making caramel-chocolate-dipped graham crackers. Much easier. And brittle, and truffles.

I know nada about raising human kids, but - I would never let a puppy tank in the evenings. We put the water up at least an hour before bedtime when we have a young one in the house. They get enough in the rest of their food. I can’t think it would hurt a child, but IANAD…

Howdy Y’all! Three down and two to go. I wanted to grab a pitchfork and a torch at work. But I’m feeling much better now!

LiLi sounds like Nat is a hydrated lil’ booger. I don’t think he’d die of thirst if you stopped lettin’ him have liquids a hour or so before bedtime. I mean, if he’s just gonna pee all night, he’s gettin’ enough.

mmmmmm’s wanna borrow some pitchforks and torches?

kopek (we gotta work on a nickname here) I looked up lutefisk. At first I was  then I remembered I like hominy which is dried corn soaked in lye-water, so I guess I can’t talk.

Leftover lasagna for dindin with garlic rolls cause I’m thawin’ out some frozen rolls and slatherin’ 'em in garlic butter… nuuuuuuuuuuuuumy!

ETA: Just so y’all know I do plan to cook the rolls, not serve 'em frozen. Rollsicles… yum!
