I never played any other Zelda game all the way to the end. I dabbled with A Link to the Past, but never got into it. OoC is one of the few N64 games worth buying, IMO.
I’m going to retry it. I started it tonight, as a matter of fact. I remembered what I found annoying the monsters respawn. In all the same places. I never even got past the inside of the Great Deku Tree, as I just couldn’t get the hang of it. (And I game a lot). But I’m going to print out the walkthrough tomorrow…at work…and then try it some more.
Don’t feel to bad. That part gave Alias and I fits when we first started the game. Once you get past that, the game should open up for you.
:smack: “too bad.”
Man, that’s a great game. Although I think the one that comes with the GC, that has all the previous Zeldas on it, isn’t the Master Quest version. It’s the regular old one. I tried playing Majora’s Mask, but the having to do everything over in time just annoyed me too much. I think that I should have taken a break between them. Just Zelda’ed out I suppose. I wish I still had my GC! The Twilight Princess was THE game I was looking forward to.
Thank you. I will continue to try.
What does everyone think about Wind Waker? I never played it, but I’ve seen actual gameplay video clips. It looks interesting.
If you like Zelda, especially Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, you’ll love it. I started to write all the things I love about that game but I realized I was dropping major spoilers, so just trust me on this.
Screenshots of the game don’t do the graphics justice. Very fluid, very pretty (or creepy). I’d rank it behind OoT and ahead of MM.
I personally liked Wind Waker a little bit more than Ocarina, though opinions varied. Ocarina was fun, but it was pretty much just Link to the Past in 3D. Wind Waker took the series in some new directions, but some people were put off by it. The main thing people had trouble with was that you spend a lot of time just sailing on the ocean, which some people found boring. I, however, sometimes think games move too fast, and that it’s sometimes fun just to sit back and contemplate your journey, and observe or explore the world the game has created. The great thing about sailing is that if you see an island off in the distance, you can change for and sail that way, and soon enough you’ll forget what it is you were originally doing, instead spending time island hopping. And while the art style may be weird at first, it doesn’t take long before you see how perfect it is for the game. The cinema scenes play out like a cartoon, but it’s not all slap-happy slapstick, there’re some very dramatic moments in the game (particularly the final battle sequence). Battles are very fast paced, and after playing Wind Waker, OoT’s battles seem very sluggish in comparison.
So I highly recommend Wind Waker if you’re in the mood for something a little different. The dungeons of course are standard Zelda, but the ones in the second half of the game offer a bit of a twist. And it even references OoT later in the game, but I think I’ve been spoiling enough already.
The thing I didn’t like about Wind Waker (even though I still liked the game) was the way each square on the grid had its own island. I’d prefer a smaller number of large islands arranged more interestingly. Also, the Wind Waker was nowhere near as cool as the ocarina. I hope they have a cool instrument in Twilight Princess.
Ocarina of Time was classic. Games get measured against it.
Majora’s Mask was good, but in places annoying.
Wind Waker sucked. Too much stupid non-action stuff, and graphics that made a mockery out of the power of the Game Cube. After picking up Pikmin and playing it, I remember thinking how awesomely realistic the next Zelda would be. What did we get?? Cartoon characters!!
But the screenies on the new Zelda to come look like what should have come out before. Might make me stop playing computer games and hook up the Cube.
It’s not bad. The plot was good and the ending was pretty cool, but there was just too much space in the game. It seems like you spend half the game just sailing around on the boat. It was big for the sake of being big.
You bloody bastards. I’m totally hooked on it now. And I have to go out of town next week. Waa!
I printed a walkthrough for the first dungeon, and realized I’d been making a much bigger deal of it than I needed to. I finally got through it, and now I have my first two songs! And I met Zelda…very cool.
Thanks a lot, guys.
The thing I liked about OOT was that your adventure took you to many different places and the dungeons were located in unique places; down in a well, up in the mountains, in a temple at the bottom of a lake, in the desert, inside of a whale, etc.
Windwaker never seemed to change. Every dungeon was on an island.
I just got very tired on continually (literally) jumping the sharks
The BigGoron sword is probably the most satisfying sidequest I’ve ever played. The sword is just so awesome, and is a really good reward for all the errands you go through to get it.
Yeah, but the megaton hammer is way more satisfying. I also like backflipping across the map while wearing the iron boots.
I’m easily amused.
Loved the game, but hated the water temple (play the ocarina, water up! Play again, water down! Iron boots on, iron boots off! Repeat ad nauseum). But then, I’m not big on water boards in any game (I hate trying to “float” into doors and avoiding hazards when a single flick of the button makes you float too high, but a lighter touch lets you sink too fast!). I really liked being able to ride the horse, though–it was fun!
My favorite Zelda was the SNES version. I loved the Pegasus boots (sht, sht, sht, sht, ruuuuuuuuuuuunn, SLAM!!!). And watching my brother cussing it was a tremendous source of amusement (though I probably shouldn’t have watched him so soon post-surgery. I almost popped my stitches!)!
Hated Majora’s Mask. Oh, not the graphics or even the gameplay–it was the constant going back in time and the million little sidequests to get all the masks. I’d never have been able to get anywhere without a player’s guide.
Loved the Wind Waker. Unlike many people, I preferred the less-dark graphics of this game–it was fun to play and MUCH easier to see everything. Also, it seemed less apt to swing around crazily (sometimes the 3D graphics make me a tad motion sick if the camera view swings around too easily). I was also fascinated to see my five year old son play it–how easy it seemed for him to learn to use the hundred-button controller and beat up on the master swordsman (he actually completed the challenge of hitting the dude 500 times before getting hit three times–I had a hard time doing that one!)!
I can’t wait to see the new one!
While I didn’t hate Majora’s Mask I will agree with you on one point- The game was pretty much impossible without a players guide. I never use them in the first place and this game got to a point where you just had no clue as to where to go to next. Then upon reading the guide it would tell you “meet so-and-so at exactly 5:30 and bring him a rock, he will tell you he’s thirsty. Then go meet the inn keeper, sleep there 5 times and he’ll give you a cookie, etc. etc.”
Once I had the guide though the rest of the game played very well and there were some excellent dungeons (air temple that flips upside-down).
I love this game. I’m working on it right now. I always do this thing where I get right to the end of a game - and then I stop because I don’t want it to be over!
So my n64 copy has a save file… at Ganondorf’s Castle.
I’ve started over on GameCube.
Okay, and this may be lame, but a few things about this game seriously freak me out (and make me love it more!)
-
I am actually completely terrified of those big plant things that sit in Hyrule Field and take to the air if you get too close. If I see one, I’ll pretty much almost panic and my entire body will become covered in goosebumps. Sometimes my eyes water.
-
It’s really scary when you make the Cuccos mad and they fly out of the sky en masse to KILL YOU.
-
The birds that divebomb you at Lon Lon Ranch at night? Brrrr, they give me the chills for some reason!
Okay, literally getting goosebumps again…
I love this game.
(Ahh, I need to restart Wind Waker, as well…!)
Bah! The megaton hammer sucks! It’s only good for big tough enemies or rocks that don’t move much. Biggoron has better range and is just plain cooler.
I’m another person who liked the graphics in WW. They were awesome. I wouldn’t want the whole series like that, but it was perfect for that game.
