G’night Shoe! Happy late mornin’ BooFae! G’mornin’ ever’body else!
Balconatin’ and caffinatin’ a bit over an hour pre-dawn. Sky still full dark to the east. 'Tis a cool 74/23 (!) on the way to 90/32. Clear skies and the few stars are sharp. Shame it was raining at eclipse time yesterday.
When I wake up I have to decide whether the day will include early beaching so I know which clothes to stealthily put on in the dark. Looked out the window, saw stars and thought “Yaay! beach day!” Went back into the bedroom to the spot where I keep a preset set of beach clothes and felt only bare shelf. Shit!
I can’t get into my dresser / armoire while Her Ladyship is sleeping; too noisy. So I keep a pre-built pile in the closet for each of the several different missions I get dressed for: chillin’, beachin’, gymin’, doctorin’, irkin’. But that also means I need to replenish the relevant pile after she’s up. Which I forgot last time. No beach for me.
No firm plans for today. The first big art festival of our festival season is this weekend down in Ft. Lauderdale. Might do that. Otherwise no clue what the day holds.
I know you know this, but you can’t lose weight or be fit on a poor diet. If we could combine my eating discipline and your exercise discipline into a single person, one of us would be really, really healthy. The other one … not so much.
Eating 1x per day is also not generally considered smart for health in general or weight control in particular.
But if you’re happy, who am I to harsh your mellow?
Yaay for planning! Which may solve the rest of your travelling issues too. Good luck on not reeking to some a**hole TX cop.
Shoe, glad that Long Night was uneventful. Sleep well.
Welp, the horizon is now a dull orange, the birdies are awakening and sharing their overnight stories with one another, so it’s time to [Send]
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 52 Amurrkin out (BRRR!) and clear with a predicted high of 68 and mostly N.O.S. for the day. Looks like Fall has arrived. Of course it could be false Fall. Hard to say in these parts. We made the executive decision last night not to deheathenate today. I am not scheduled to serve, plus I figure what with bein’ around a Bishop and a ton o’ Priests and Deacons yestiddy, I probably got enough Jesus to hold me over for a while. Thus we shall be in high sloth and general overall uselessness mode today. We shall sup, maybe even N.O.L., upon the chili/cheese/onion/slaw dawgs and oven fries we didn’t do yestiddy. Fartfest to follow, of course.
Vrooom good on you for the shoe donation. I am sure it will be much appreciated.
RealFish hope the surgery etal helps. Like JtC said, pain like that just sucks.
Nettie HEE! Feel free to be all smug for a couple of days. We often forget to check the simple things first.
shoe not only did me make Gabriel a deacon, our Presiding Bishop is Michael. We are watched over by angels!
Now I need more ca.feine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah,
If you’re so inclined, I bet you could find one in a thrift store.
When we’re at restaurants that post calories beside the offerings, I’m often aghast at what I read. Especially when the item boasts many more calories that I try to eat for a day! I know a once-in-a-while indulgence isn’t so terrible, but still - YOIKS!! I lurve this little offering and the one time I had it, FCD and I shared it, but still, even half is truly more than I should be eating for a treat. I wish restaurants offered tiny portions but I know patrons expect heaped plates when they eat out. At our favorite Mexican place, the first thing I do is divide my dinner in half and ask for a take-out container.
For the second day in a row, I slept in till after 7!! Current temp is 49° and it’s overcast, but breaking up. We might get to 60° today, and might see big ball of fire in sky. I’ll help FCD in his shop for a while and finish a couple of crochet projects afterwards. And since I didn’t clean the critter fountain yesterday, that’s on the list today also. So I’ll be busy for a bit.
And I’ve got a biiiiiig poke loin that needs to be divided into roasts and chops. I’m thinking maybe one of the roasts will be rotissed for supper today. That’s a lot of planning before 8AM - I need to back off!!!
Read all but retained almost nothing. Hugs and smooches all around!
Afternoon, mumpers! It’s currently 10c/49f with no predicted change, and sunny. Weather app says “If this fucking weather was a car, it would be a beige Ford Tempo from 1986. Man, fuck that car.” Looks fairly nice out there actually, bright blue sky and plenty of sun. It must be chilly as the heating turned itself on earlier but has now reached our chosen temperature (17 degrees) and has gone off again.
Boo thank you for the “u”, that’s very kind of you!
Oopsie I know what you mean about volunteer events, we have to spend a certain amount of time at a specific pet store, with a stand advertising the cat rescue we’re raising funds for. We do have donation buckets and usually have a few small items for sale but we’re not allowed to do anything “big”. The partner-charity status simply says we have to maintain a presence in-store for a certain number of hours per month, and that way we qualify for funding and regular donations of a pallet of stuff. It’s disheartening because we’re usually standing around for nothing, but the rewards from the pet store partnership is worthwhile so we still need to be there.
swampy congrats on successful ordination, and the rest of the clergy behaving themselves! Sounds like you have deheathenated by osmosis instead
Pilot I am the same, clothes are put out the night before so I can pick them up and get dressed in the dark (or in another room) to avoid disturbing 'im indoors as I am always up before him.
nellie yay for improved sight!
Cookie yay for apples and pears!
hippie what a fabulous tribute, and a great way to have remembered the company too. They obviously still think very highly of you, that’s such a good feeling too.
I’ve been catching up with all your antics although I’ve not had much time to post. Friday night we were out late after seeing a band in a venue that’s been closed for almost 10 years for refurbishment. I was up reasonably early on Saturday to tend to the cats and then went out to get my hair done-did! Scooted into town for a quick visit to one store for cat treats, picked up lunch from the Good Indian Place, then home to scoff it and do other stuff in the afternoon.
Early dinner, then out again to see three bands in our favourite local rock pub. Very good night, met some friends, had some entertaining chats, and managed to get ourselves out of the pub before 3am closing! Went home, watched a bit of a bizarre film and was in bed by 5am.
I have no real plans for today, the cats have been tended to, I’ve had a bath, and I’m sitting here catching up with you, drinking tea and contemplating making breakfast for lunch. I ought to run the rollsuck round the house, but I could do that tomorrow instead. I deserve an afternoon of slothage
We decided to pick Cortlands. If you’re not familiar, they’re not as sweet as Honeycrisp and not tart like Granny Smiths. They have a purplish-red skin.
Had a little trouble getting to sleep last night because of muscle spasms in the legs, probably from the walking yesterday. Got up and did some stretches and then conked out. No issues this morning.
We stopped for Mexican food after the apple picking yesterday, at the niece’s suggestion. Really horrible food, even for the usual American idea of Mexican. How badly can you fuck up a taco salad? Well, for starters, you don’t season the ground beef. At all. Not even salt, as far as I could tell. The “edible” salad bowl was like cardboard. Well, I have a peculiar knack for picking the worst thing on any given menu, so it was to be expected. Other than that, it was a good outing. Now we just have to figure out what to do with 30 pounds of apples!
It’s 53F and dark outside. The expected high is around 63F, and it’ll be cloudy. I hope it dries enough to mow the lawn, but I doubt it’ll happen. Tomorrow will be super soggy.
cookie, growing up I had two Gravenstein apple trees in my backyard. Those trees had been there for many decades and were prolific apple producers. Every fall, we made a ton of applesauce, apple butter, and Apful kuchen (the Bavarian version of apple cake). In IMHO, it’s so much better than American apple cake. I’m glad you’re not all hurty from your excursion, but sorry you had to eat crappy food.
swampy, I’m glad the ordination went well. I like it when I go somewhere that includes eats, and I’m full enough not to bother with dinner later.
fish, I hope you and your healthcare providers can get things sorted for you.
I have a pair of slacks that I need to hem because I’ve stopped wearing high heels and have gone to a lower heel. Such a shame because I have some beautiful shoes, but I can’t quite bring myself to part with them yet.
I’m not sure what the day holds, but I know it will not include any retail. Between suitcases, new perfume, haircuts, and other things I’m feeling kind of icky about spending. All the stuff was needed, but I reach a certain level (an internal limit), and then I cut myself off.
I booked our shuttle (well private SUV) for the airport. Who doggy! That wasn’t cheap, but I don’t have to worry about them stopping elsewhere, and I’ve arranged picked up early enough to get us to the airport in plenty of time. I do not like to OJ through the airport (those of you of a certain generation will remember that commercial), and I like to be able to sit down, enjoy some coffee, and people-watch before I board. Mostly, I just like not feeling stressed or rushed at the airport. It’ll be a Monday morning, so it’ll be crazy busy there.
It’s Sunday, so that means laundry is on the agenda. I might clean out some other kitchen drawers again too. I have another drawer full of cake/baking type of utensils that is just ridiculously overfull. Most of the items in there are not even used, so I’ll just donate them…
Tomorrow is an in-office day and it will be the wettest day of the week, which makes for a super crappy commute. I could actually just skip this week, and no one would say a word, but I didn’t go in last week since Monday was a holiday, and I feel it’s important to put in an appearance every so often. I may skip Wednesday, though, depending on my workload. It’ll be even more busy for me since the MPA will be on leave.
I do try to watch what I eat and have recently started counting calories more carefully, but life is for living and if once a month (which is my 5 Guys limit) I do something excessive…heck, I wallow in it! Then back to counting and taking better care. Never going to be thin or Charles Atlas fit-looking, but still good. And I do have two meals a day and light/no-calorie snacks during it, sorry if I mixed things up.
And yeah, FCM, placing the calories next to the food does make it a bit harder to enjoy, but since I only eat out 3-4 times a week I try to control what I bring into the house for the bulk of the meals.
OK, enough on weight (we’ll see if I’m below last Moanday’s 241.6lbs tomorrow).
Cookie, enjoy your apple bounty, red has some good suggestions.
Taters, I’ve had to run through various airports in my time (mostly for connections) so I agree, early and sitting is preferred to fretting and running. Of course, it it’s an airport with 6-8 gates like my local one, not a lot of running is required…
Typing this as my phone updates (30 apps to update since I do it but once a week) and also added the Royal Caribbean app for my November trip. Fall has definitely arrived, 54F heading for 57F and cloudy all day. Told the 12U boys that I would be at a local college soccer game this afternoon if they wanted to attend, so I’m bound to go no matter what the weather, and probably they (and their parents) will be smarter than me and stay home. Still, I always try to make the offer so the kids can see a higher level of soccer to aspire to.
Outside of that and my Olive Garden trip (another calorie nightmare, but only visited about once every two months), nothing much is on the agenda for today. Have picked up my Sunday NY Times and that should keep me in reading matter for quite awhile. Everyone take care.
The rain stopped before sunrise, and it’s a lovely fall morning…though a bit brisk! It’s currently 48°F (at just after 9:00am) and sunny, but there’s a breeze adding a bite. The expected high is only 61, so I’ll wear a sweatshirt when I go meet my friend for lunch. I love this weather!
Yesterday I finished watching a decent Netflix docuseries about the rise and fall of Juul e-cigs, and watched a few series premieres of shows that I’d been meaning to check out. I wasn’t crazy about any of them. I also killed a bunch of time reviewing the “to watch” lists on my various streaming services, and looking for new stuff to add. Oh, and I did wind up taking a short (20-min) nap. Life in the fast lane, bay-bee!
I also started working on my new LEGO set yesterday. Sets come in numbered bags, which get assembled in order. This one has 7 bags, and I put bags 1 and 2 together yesterday:
Between going out to lunch and playing with tiny plastic bricks I likely won’t post again today, so I hope everyone has a great Sunday! Catch y’all in the new thread!
Good to see ya, and fingers crossed for the upcoming appointments…

I hardly ever look at the nutrition info on menus: if I’m out, I’ve already decided to not care what I’m eating.
Yeah, it’s always actually worthwhile to go to these events. For awareness, if nothing else. And usually we get a decent number of people stopping by the table…giving away pens and magnets helps with that. Yesterday’s event was tough because of the crappy weather, low turnout (no doubt related), and super short duration: it was an annual informational conference hosted by a middle school, and it turned out there were only 30 minutes allotted for parents/kids to visit the community organization tables before the presentations started. The drive and setup took longer than that…meh. I heard that a lot more people usually go, though, so I won’t say no to doing it again next year.
I’m pretty sure yesterday was the last community event of the year; it’s the last one on my radar, anyway. The events cycle starts again in February, which is always super busy for us because it’s Black History Month and my organization is the NAACP.
Despite knowing it’s not good for me either, FTR I did have a 5 Guys bacon cheese burger & small fries in the last week-ish myself. On lettuce instead of bun to reduce the carbs enough I could eat at least some of the fries. I’m sure I overdid the fries though. And fried chicken with some fries a couple days ago.
Hmmm. On closer inspection I may be approaching that self-defeating self-fooling status of “I only cheat on my diet on days ending in “y”, so it’s all OK.” Must. Do. Better.
I suppose you’ve mostly posted about your excessive days, not your careful eating days, since it seemed like I heard “I swam, I exercised, I refereed, then I had a FF burger & fries” nearly every time you’d mentioned what you ate.
Sorry to be a nanny.
That’s going to be one heck of a flower arrangement
Pellet stove in the shop wasn’t working, but the owner’s manual had a very helpful troubleshooting guide and FCD got it up and running again, so yay! I did the washer/nut/screw/bold tetris - organizing the little hardware drawers by size and type so it will theoretically be easier to find stuff. FCD is still sorting, so there will likely be more to organize, but it’s coming along. We’re back in the house and I’m about to throw together some lunch for me. He had a late breakfast so he’s not hungry.
My guess is that the pronunciation your mother used was from whatever region in Italy her people were from. Every Italian-American I know who learned some Italian at home and then studied Italian in college discovers that pronunciation varies widely from region to region, in part because Italy wasn’t unified until 1861. On my first day in Italian class, the prof, a Roman, asked what village my mother was from. (Some Romans are very snooty, and he was one.) I told him. He said they pronounced their own village name wrong. I said he should tell that to the 1,000 people in Mom’s village, as they blithely pronounced it the way they had for centuries. Then I shut up because I wanted to pass the class.
hippie, so nice you got the credit you deserve!
nettie, yay for clever you saving the day via circuit breaker!
Hooray!
Taters, I definitely understand why you’d go for the pricier ride. It once took the shuttle service based here 4 hours to get from SeaTac to my home. I hope SeaTac is uncrowded and that you get time for a leisurely cup of coffee.
MetalMouse, the proof is in the pudding, and you’ve lost a lot of pudding in the last year or two. I salute you and your habitual “big bowl of sallit.”
I’m sure there’s a reason she’d shoot down the idea, but has she considered earplugs?
I live alone and STILL keep a pair by my bedside (and an entire box of replacements in the bathroom cabinet) because I find that I sleep SO much better with them in.
Like Her Ladyship, I’m a light sleeper, and can become extremely grumpy if prematurely awakened, as it is usually impossible for me to conk back out.
Matter of fact, that’s gonna become an issue again, now that I’m re-stocked on ASFs. They’re nocturnal, and the wee hours of dawn seem to be their “Last chance to drink lotsa water!” time, so they rattle those damn water bottles with a vengeance.
When I’m awake … you know, I kinda missed the sound. (I’ve especially missed the “Week! WEEK!” of their bebehs.)
But when I’m trying to sleep, that rattle … or worse, the sound of one trying to drink out of an empty bottle … that’s even louder + includes the sound of guilt and neglect, so I hafta get up and refill it.
That reminded me of the Simpsons Halloween episode where the kids send their dog & cat through some sort of transmogrification device. When the first creature (with the head of the dog in front and the head of the cat in back) appears, Bart immediately claims it.
When the second creature (featuring both butts) emerges, Bart says, “EWWW! Lisa, you can have that one.”
Shall I say a rosary for your soul?
(That’s about 800% funnier if you remember how lapsed of a Cath’lick I am. Also if you remember I suck at math.)
I hope you made this joke to them!
Clearly.
Nice “typo” there.
I know what you mean, but every time you write it, I picture miscreant pre-teens throwing raw eggs at a brick wall.
Or a car.
Or each other.
{ sniffle } I feel like you don’t know me at all.
I feel like enough other people also feel the same way, that some cultural pushback is due. I usually order off the kids/senior menu, if it’s available.
Then again, food costs are a fairly low % of a restaurant’s cost. When labor and rent are fixed (and $$$) so it costs them almost the same to make a TeensyBurger as it does to make a HugeBurgerTheSizeOfMyHead, it makes more financial sense to serve bigger portions & then charge more.
Person A: “You need Jesus.” (pronounced “JAAYY-zusss” for maximum effect.)
Person B: “Lemme buy you a beer.”
I had to Google the model. Ye gods, what a boring 80s-core fugly thing.
Watch the fine print; it might only be rented.
… but no cute, adoptable kittens to entice stopping by?
“Deheathenazation By Osmosis” would make a helluva band name.
Can’t decide if they’d play insipid Christian rock, or skin-peeling death metal.
What, were they coating everything in chrome meanwhile?
Gold leaf?
That’s just sad.
Try asking the server, “What’s the most popular thing here?”
… then again, a few weeks back, some out-of-towner who’d heard about us rolled up to the window. When I asked what he’d like to order, he asked me what people most liked to get here. I was momentarily flustered and answered, in all seriousness, “Um … pizza?”
An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
(There’s a joke about 'Murrican health care in there somewhere, I just know it.)
I haven’t worn heels since before I moved up here. But I schlepped a coupla boxes worth, because they’re just too cyooote, and who knows, maybe I’ll wear them again someday?
Meanwhile, I’d be laughed straight out of work if I showed up in heels, and it’s not like G.C. and I go on actual dates.
Most people just eat the stuff, but hey, you do you.
Besides water, and celery (negative calories, donchaknow) what the hell can one consume that has zero calories?
Even a single Tic-Tac mint - not to be confused with a single TikTok video - has 1.5 calories.
Why, a body could get positively fat just gorging on those alone!
Okay, maybe not “fat” but a bit fluffy. On the plus side, you’d have the freshest breath on the planet.
This made me as I was raised by people who would consider going out to eat 3-4 times a month an absolute extravagance (mind, they live in one of the wealthier areas of Dallas and were fully prepared, all those years ago, to pay for me to go to Harvard, so they ain’t ezzactly hurtin’ for dough) and miiight go out to eat maybe 3-4 times a year. Tops. Mostly if someone else invited/forced them to join.
Diff’rent strokes; takes all kinds to make the world go 'round. Etc.
I’m somewhere in between now, having learned that “the PITA that is shopping & cooking for one” + “hatred of hand-washing dishes” + “shit appetite” = “recipe for disaster” for me.
But even that still feels like an extravagance.
Yet another, “Shit how often do responsible adults do that?!” moment.
I let my phone upgrade itself when it whines about it … probably every few months, at most.
Am I supposed to be “forcing” software updates?
Last time an app was wonky, I tried ^^ & got a “No updates available at this time” mssg anyway. (Uninstall + re-install fixed the issue.)
I mixed you up with @scareyfaerie for a second, and wondered why you weren’t simply giving away kittens instead.
Until I got to “commercial” I thought this was an entirely different reference to O.J. and his … high-speed travels that were once shown on TV.
I genuinely hope you said the word “blithely” out loud. Some words just don’t get used enough.
Sunny as hell today. Monkey wouldn’t shut the fuck up, so he’s jingle-bell-y outside on strict probation.
It helps that his food bowl is almost empty, so I’m counting on him coming a-runnin’ when he hears it being refilled.
He’s currently rolling in some catnip/silvervine that I sprinked out for him.
Off to work an open → close shift. Usually Sundays are NBD but lately, Saturdays have been slower than usual (for what’s usually our busiest day) while Sundays have seen us a-hoppin’ so who knows what the day will bring.
The apps that update via Samsung tend to nag me. So does the OS. As for apps from Google Play, that’s pretty much on the “when I think about it” plan, usually when something else wanted updates and put the thought in my alleged mind.
ISTR that was actually pretty low-speed as such things go.
