The Simpsons 16 Dec '07 (spoilers)

This is strange. I almost looks as if the first act will share the same plot as the rest of the episode. When was the last time that happened?

Goodbye Cruller World!

Well, that was interesting to say the least. They riffed on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and It’s a Wonderful Life. Never thought I’d see that combination!

The Simpsons ring out 2007 with quite possibly their best episode of the year. The setup was very well written- I was as curious as Homer was to figure out what had happened. Based on all the special effects and fancy animation, this is probably their Emmy nominee for this year, and it deserves to be put up- not only is the special animation well-done, the story is captivating and funny. I’m somewhat reminded of a past Emmy-winning episode, The Seemingly Never-Ending Story. Homer’s vision of his life was an animation highlight, and there were a lot of funny bits- including Willie killing Scrat and then being attacked by other squirrels, and the entire sequence with Bart and Lisa in the bubble- especially the cell phone ad.

“To a man who I’m happy to call my best friend- Homer Simpsno! Simpson. Dyslexia…Duffman’s secret shame!”

Great episode.

Irish Kiss.

Too funny

Ah, that reminds me that comes from The Final Cut.

Wikipedia claims that this video was the inspiration. I’m not sure if that’s true, but it would make sense based on the YouTube joke at the end of Homer’s fantasy.

Could be. The music sounds similar.

At first I thought this was too wacky an idea, but it was very funny and executed really well. Excellent animation, too.
“Goodbye, Cruller World!” nearly killed me.
The movie parodies were actually parodies and not just references, which is a big plus for me.

Also, this was another episode where Homer was more clever than he has been in recent years. Not brilliant by any means, but less dumb.

Wasn’t it also revealed that he is gay at one point? (Not that it is a shame, but that it is one of his secrets.)

Good episode. Am now expecting a ‘Guess what? That was our secret series finale!’ press release tomorrow a.m.

Does Fox now have an interest in Youtube? They also did a Youtube bit on King of the Hill.

I’m re-watching this now… this one was really good all the way through! Old Jewish Man’s rememberance of his first Christmas, Frink’s explanation of the horrible things his machine does, Homer, Bart and Lisa sledding, Bart wailing on 10- and 20-year-old Homer (“What is it you want from me? Money? Weed?”), Homer being unable to get a pizza in his own imagination…

And this may have been the most elaborate freeze-frame episode ever. A lot of the scenes Homer went past in his mind were from real episodes, and you know somebody’s going to catalogue them all. I recognized the Rolling Stones, a scene from Simpsons Bible Stories, Homer recovering from heart surgery and a few others, but I’m not taking up that task.

I thought the memory sequence was very clearly the Noah video. Nicely done.

Nope. In fact, Fox and a couple of other networks have gotten together to form the “anti-youtube” called Hulu. (Good luck with that, guys.)

Oh, and the end of the 39 years thing showed a ton of Homer’s different looks from past episodes, like the safety salamander and King Size Homer.

And falling off the bridge onto an airbag at his own surprise birthday party was from (spoiler for the movie below) The Game, the 1999 David Fincher directed film.

I liked Bart at the blackboard at the beginning:

The capital of Montana is not “Hannah”
The capital of Montana is not “Hannah”
The capital of Montana is not “Hannah”

Good gags: The Memory Recovery Institute - We do not do MRI’s

Professor Frink - “Since N.E.R.D. stands for ‘Not Even Remotely Dorky,’ I’ll take that as a compliment.”

Suicide Bridge - In memory of Governor Chester L. Suicide.

Homer: One thing that still doesn’t make sense is, why did the dog attack me?
Bart: Because you never feed him, never walk him, and never let him out to pee.
Homer: Oh, yeah. (To SLH:) Who’s an angry dog? Who’s an angry dog?

And the scene where Moe spat in Homer’s drink and said he always did that to him was reminiscent of a similar scene from Memento (although I’m not sure if that was deliberate).

Wasn’t there a flashback with Marge saying “keep away from me!” or something like that, which we never saw resolved? Or did I just confuse myself?
