The Straight Dope Art Gallery

That stained glass piece is gorgeous! What an original design. I love it.

Some of my drawings and paintings, and examples of me doing portraits. I don’t usually show my abstract doodles, but figured WTF. None of this work is recent; it’ll be a few years before I can really jump in again :sigh:.

They’re wonderful! Once those kids are gone for a few hours at a time…WooHOO!

You’re sweet, Kalhoun - I’m glad you took a chance on showing your work. You clearly know your stuff, it’s surprising to me that you’d be reticent.

I’ve always had a problem with that. I see everyone else’s beautiful work and it intimidates me. I really enjoy a variety of disciplines and after decades of zero artistic endeavor, I just decided that I’m going to make time for it. I shouldn’t have let the rest of my hectic, unfulfilling life get in the way of something I enjoy so much. I am having a blast!

Wow. All these crafty Dopers around here. I’m kinda scared to link to my stuff!

Here’s my collection of painted glassware.
This one is my favorite.

photopat, those pictures are awesome.

I’m not sure I follow. If you’re talking about the 3 most recent shots at the top of my stream, then it might be the lillypads. Click the button labelled “all sizes” above the photos and you’ll see a larger resolution version.

Thanks. FWIW, despite your controversial history in CS, I’ve always thought you had good taste (fellow Verhoevan fan, here), so I appreciate your comments. I plead guilty with the photoshop. I come from a graphic arts background so I sometimes can’t resist firing up PS and going to town.

Awesome, I want one! Please tell me you’ll do Alice Cooper next.

Cool. I’m waiting for my new Holga to be delivered sometime next week. It’ll be a long time before I can afford a Hasselblad, though.

These are quite good. Some of your abstracts remind me of Kandinsky or Miro.

Anime-style art and fanart. Also features gifts to me and badly taken photographs.

Well, the elapsed time from start to finish is a year or two, but that’s only working on occasional free time, and I’m usually working on a few at once. Plus, I start them around Christmastime, when I’m visiting my mom and can use her bandsaw for rough-cutting, but I have to do most of the knifework in the summer, since I don’t have any place indoors I can mess up with the wood shavings. The time I actually spend working on them is harder to say, since I don’t clock my leisure time.

I’m into 3D modeling & Animating. Professionally and as a hobby (if that makes any sense, I guess I just love what I do!)

Here’s a Bat I made for a horror movie called FEAST.

Here’s a proof of concept for a studio identity

Here’s the main character for a short CG animated film I’m making.

Wow - I love this thread.

I do a buncha different stuff. Mostly I make a mess but hopefully art happens too.

Finally giving this guy his paint job:

Life is really way too short. So is my attention span.

I have been checking in this thread all afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed every submission. I haven’t seen a single piece from any contributor that I wouldn’t buy and proudly hang in my home. I would like to brag on each of you individually, but as I have nothing to contribute other than praise I will stay out of the way.

But I have to say, toadbriar all of your work is amazing, and I love the wonderfully sick faerie specimens the most. I would like to invite you to my next party.

Absolutely wonderful! Those damn faeires will be in my brain while I sleep. I *think * that’s a good thing…either that or I’m doomed!!

Tell me…other than your website and Ebay auctions, do you use any other methods to market your work? You are truly a talented artist.

Damn…those faeries…

Here’s my atempt at painting a few years ago:

I did a whole series, using the Frederick’s of Hollywood catalog for inspiration. But this is the only one I have scanned.

My favorite hobby is crocheting:

I also do a little knitting, mosaics, jewelry making and bead making.

IOW, I’m not talented in anything, but mediocre in several things.

My Deviantart page, with a selection of some of my work. My more recent stuff hasn’t been uploaded though.

Here’s the link to my eBay store, selling prints of my photography:

For about six months or so I’ve been building pinhole cameras out of matchboxes; here are some of the decent photos I’ve taken with them.

By the way, here are the instructions from which I learned to make them, though I’ve modified the basic idea quite a bit since then, including adding a powerful magnet for a tripod-mount, devising a sliding shutter, etc. I’ve got a carpenter-friend who’s going to help me work out a wooden, reusable version soon. I am very excited about this.

Those are really neat, I enjoyed them.

Hey Batsinma Belfry! Very nice crochet work!

Thank you Beaucarnea! I would go to your party.

Thank you Kalhoun! My marketing and self promotion gland is sadly stunted. But then again I do my best work when I am left alone to make whatever I want, and then sell it. Only recently am I seriously considering exhibiting some work.

BatsinmaBelfry, have you got pictures of your jewelry and mosaics and beads?
The purple cardigan is awfully snazzy.
