The Straight Dope Secret Santa 2004 Exchange! New, with Improvements!

I drove the postman insane making sure the address was perfect as it was going over the border and through the woods

I wonder if he then took my package and stuck it in some kind of black hole as retribution?

:smack:

There was nothing in this morning’s post. Perhaps my secret Santa gift will arrive next week?

Cunctator, Your’s is en route, I have been assured. Think of it as Xmas arriving at a less stressful time.

Actually, YES, I have posted, twice, that my package to Alice in Wonderland was mailed - on December 22d. As I explained, I turned an ankle, fell, fractured one foot and then developed cellulitis in the other leg (which had taken the brunt of the fall) back on December 9th, just days after receiving my SS assignment. I am extremely sorry that it did not get there in time for Christmas, but cannot explain why it has yet to arrive. :frowning: And I am NOT happy at being singled out as delinquent when clearly I have not been! :(:frowning:

-tarragon 918 - who never received a SS gift last year and probably will not participate again in the future. :frowning:

Thanks for that confirmation Shirley. My sense of anticipation had been starting to wane somewhat. Now it has been given a new burst of life.

Me no get yet. Did you manage to get it out?

I’ll test the sundial the first chance I get. I think the compass doesn’t quite point north – but we’re not trying to find north, now, are we?

No, just close enough to it that the shadow falls in the right general area. You also have to compensate for things like daylight savings time. But you’ll never have to buy a watch battery again!

Tarragon I profusely apologize. I don’t recall outting you directly by name, but this is a behemoth thread and I am a congential lazy idiot who has not gone back to re-read every time I check here. Hey, I was working on my Dead Pool List! . Clearly it is my fault, but I blame the Dead Pool List as well. Damn them!

Also, between the few dopers who have not receive their packages ( out of 60, only 3 are so far unaccounted for. YAY!) and keeping track of who, I confused you with another doper who has not been on board since December 15th ( I think. ) It was unintentional. I suck with real names in real life, imagine everyone’s imaginary names and their real names too to gum up the squeaky wheel that is my brain. I know…shut up, Shirley

I know what it is like not to get a SS package. I signed up last year and did not receive one as well. I let it go and decided to organize this years Secret Santa, which is the first time I have ever done something like this on line or in real life.

Who knows why the post office is taking its sweet time. It took over six weeks for airmail to get my package that I mailed to myself from Germany to Michigan. Six weeks. Yet, the cheapest package I sent from Michigan to Germany took about 10 days. And, to make things even more interesting, when I mail my neighbors a letter it has taken over 30 days to get to their house and vice versa. ( We now just stick letters into each others mail boxes.)
The post office works on its own time line and I pity them during the holiday time period.

I’ll shut up now.

I got mine! I got mine. Postman just delivered it.

Oh, my. This is beautiful.

It’s a Classic Treasures castle figurine, with a clear, pink and green crystal base that leads up to the “stone” castle part, two towers connected by a pink crystal bridge, with a dragon wrapped around the larger tower, both with clear crystal peaks.

I am very glad that you like it, and very sorry it took so long.
Funny thing, is there were two of them that I was torn between buying for you and they were both very pretty, and I ended up getting the other one from my mother in law for christmas after telling her about the one that I got for you.
Iris thank you very much for the jewlery box (with a dragon!) it is beautiful! And right away I tossed the candy wrapper I was using as a book mark and am using the one that you got for me.
Did you make that? It is very pretty.

As for my donation, the children and I gathered up a bunch of little $1 toys for the treasure chest in the treatment rooms at the childrens hospital at the university of Iowa.
My son has been in and out of there and I knew the treasure trove was getting low, and I know how much those children enjoy having a little trinket to look forward to after being poked and prodded. It also got my children into the spirit of things and I saw a different side of them.

IT CAME!!! IT CAME!!! IT CAME!!! IT CAME!!!

I clearly got the rockinest Secret Santa of all Secret Santas, the best Secret Santa that ever Secret Santa’d, I did.

I got very cool and fun stuff. I have a nifty pen. “A pen,” you ask? “Why is that so nifty?” Well let me tell you. It’s a pen that comes with its own car. And the pen has a controller so that I can remotely control the car. I can make it drive. Forward AND back!! And when I’m not driving the car (I’m not sure if that will ever happen, I drove it to the bathroom with me when I had to go, plus I drove it to my computer so I can write about it), it sits INSIDE

sigh

One absent-minded hit of the TAB button and an errant ENTER and off goes a posting prior to its intended release to the general public. Oh well.

Yes, INSIDE the pen! Inside a little clear dome, in fact, so even if you’re not driving the car, you can see it inside.

But that’s not all, no way.

I got a neat book that shows me how to draw animals with nothing more than a pen and my thumb prints. Thumb prints!! Who knew it was that easy? I know I sure wouldn’t a thunk it. And I got a neat twisty can of cocoa that twists. And it makes dogs dressed up in various snow gear look different. Actually, I guess there’s only two dogs. The other is a polar bear. See? It’s fun, AND has variety.

And I got a chocolaty bit that I can eat. AND (I know, when will it stop, eh?) I got a fun massage dealy that makes massaging easy. It looks kinda like Popeye doing a gymnastics move. Waytogo Popeye!

Yup, the coolest Secret Santa EVER!! I feel bad for the poor sod who was the recipient of my gift. I mean, it was ok, but it was nowhere near as good as this stuff. I actually feel a bit bad. Maybe I should send my recipient a couple of thumb animals and a cup o hot cocoa.

Nah

Thanks Secret Santa!!

I got my youngest daughter the thumbprint thing last year and we had a ball with it!
Much to hubbys dismay we had thumbprint animals everywhere! On the walls, on the doors, and window frames, we went crazy with it.

And it’s LOVELY Tarragon!. Horray!

The snow globe is just what I like - I’ve put it up with my little collection. Ditto for the Lindor - now, I was supposed to be shedding the couple of X-mas lbs that are stuck on my ass currently, but I think I can make an exception for Lindor.

This made my day! I got some really crappy medical news today, and the idea of shwanking a boatload of chocolate and playing with my new toy makes me happy, happy, happy.

BTW - I can explain the delay - the package arrived in tatters, with great gaping holes in it, but the guts were OK!

Thank you very much.

Whew! I am glad to know that the package arrived finally. I almost lost faith in the postal service, to be honest! And I’m especially glad to hear that all was in one piece, rather than -pieces- I’ve gotten packages like that too, though–look like they were caught in a mangler or something.

Thanks for being so patient, and I’m glad that you liked it. My daughter collects snow globes too. And enjoy the truffles.

I’m still waiting…I have confidence in Duffer, though, that it will get here eventually. Did it get sent yet?

My neighbour’s rung me to tell me that she has collected a package that was sitting on my front door step. So this could be it. I’ll know when I get home from work this afternoon. I’m so excited

It arrived! It arrived! And Duffer packed it really well- none of the ceramic stuff broke! It’s an incense burner, I think, in a really pretty green. And it arrived at the perfect time, as we’re currently having awful smells coming from our garbage disposal, and I can’t wait to cover up the smell.

And even better, it was wrapped in bubble wrap! So I got a pretty, awesome incense burner and I got to play with bubble wrap!

Thanks, duffer! You rock!

It was a false alarm. The package was some textbooks I had ordered from a bookshop in Melbourne.
