The stupid rumors about Springfield Haitians

Well now I saw someone commenting online that the Haitians are stealing babies and eating them. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. I suspect Vance to talk about it any minute.

“When I said they were stealing babies, I meant ‘fur babies’. My intention was not to introduce a new racist attack, it was merely to exacerbate the existing racist attack, while also making fun of the childless cat ladies again. I’m not going to apologize for you not having a sufficiently racist sense of humor!”

The scary part is that Trump and Vance are fucking stupid while still being smarter than the people who vote for them.

Who are really fucking stupid – that’s why there are so many.

“Haiti? I absolutely despise-i!”

I need to look into that, because we already had a referendum a couple of cycles ago to do that, and it passed.

My brief understanding is that Republicans still control the redistricting commission that Ohio’s vote previously established and have basically been ignoring the law. The new referendum requires the commission to consist of five Republicans, five Democrats, and five unaffiliated voters.

Party of law and order!

Yeah, the way that the commission is set up pretty much guarantees that the five “unaffiliated” members will all be from the majority party. But the previous initiative also put a bunch of requirements that the commission must follow: That’s where the real meat was.

AKA “alternative facts.”

Here’s a video from someone who says she lives there. TL : DW - Yes, social services are stretched thin, but you have to expect that when a city’s population rapidly increases by a factor of 1/3 to 1/4, and as for criminals walking the streets, the scariest ones are the people who look like her.

When a large number of Southeast Asian refugees were settled in Des Moines ca. 1980, there were also pet-eating rumors. My grandmother (1898-1990) also said that one of her friends told her that she saw some Cambodians smoking marijuana, and added, “She probably doesn’t even know what marijuana is.”

There was also the long-running rumor, which may well have had some truth to it, that the real reason a popular pizzeria was closed down was not the health department violations in the kitchen, but the Dumpster full of ALPO cans in the back.

Regarding “Father Knows Best”, IRL Robert Young battled alcoholism for many years, and the actress who played the little girl was a victim of father/daughter incest.

Life was complicated back then too, just in different ways.

From what I’ve read, yes, Lauren Chapin was the victim of some form of child abuse, though I’ve never been interested in the details. But it sure makes Robert Young’s persona as “Marcus Welby, MD” rather ironic, doesn’t it? Where he was a GP who apparently through any episode had only one patient at any given time, to whom he was so devotedly dedicated that you couldn’t separate them with a crowbar!

Quite so. That was more or less my point – that life sucked just as bad* back then as it does now, just with less technology to make it even worse, though certainly in different ways.

* Yes, “bad”, not “badly”. It’s being used as an adjective!

I’m not sure it’s a matter of technology making it even worse as much as technology (and social progress) making it more visible.

Just my HO, which is worth — at most — what you paid for it.

Tom the Dancing Bug nails it.

The “Marcus Welby” episodes usually (always?) started off with the patient going about their day, la la la, and then they suddenly keeled over.

A local hospital has a mental health clinic called the Robert Young Center; when he decided to dry out, he came here because he had a childhood friend living here who was a psychiatrist, and he felt that he could remain anonymous by doing it outside of Hollywood. I’ve had to explain who he was to several kids and young adults.

So you outed him? I worked in a mental hospital and it was a firing offence to give out the name of anyone there.

Probably not. From the web page of the Robert Young Center:

Robert Young, an American actor, is best known for his television roles in “Father Knows Best” and “Marcus Welby, M.D.” Throughout his 60-year career, Young had supporting roles in more than 100 films. In his later years, Young revealed that his public image was a direct contrast to his private life, which included a 30-year battle with alcoholism and depression. After discovering he was suffering from a chemical imbalance, Young began to speak publicly about the issues and problems related to alcohol and depression, and his personal struggles.

The Robert Young Center for Community Mental Health, an affiliate of UnityPoint Health – Trinity, is a comprehensive community mental health center named after Young for his work with the passage of the 708 Illinois Tax Referendum.

Vance sez it’s not his job to make sure the things he says are true.

If thr hospital has a clinic named after him, I think he probably outed himself a very long time ago…
