The tagging system forum listing displays no tag vs all tags

I only noticed this the other day. When you go into a forum, it automatically filters the threads by “all tags.”

The problem is that not all threads are tagged. “All tags” is a set of threads which have at least one tag. “No-tags” is a separate set of threads which have zero tags. The two sets do not overlap, and so you can never see all threads at once.

To make matters more confusing, the problem is inconsistent in private mode, which I checked to see what a visitor would see. In FQ, the two filters returned the same set of threads (as opposed to the screenshot example below). But in Cafe Society, the problem persists even in a private window.

This means visitors may get the impression that the site is much less active than it actually is.

So this is feedback about a problem, but also a warning to all users that depending on how you use the boards you may be missing lots of new threads. I know I’ve been.

Is there a way to set the board to default to showing all threads regardless of whether or not they’re tagged?

ETA: just to add to the confusion, I’ve now also noticed that threads you’re tracking will show up in both sets of filters.

This is odd, I went to FQ and it shows Factual Questions all tags and is displaying All the threads not just ones with tags.

As I flip between all tags and no tags I see A question about early color television in both lists.

Even in Cafe Society all tags vs. no tags is working fine. British Dopers: Tell Me More About Christmas Pantos shows in both lists as an example.

Which interface are you using? I’m in Discourse Classic and will test a few others.

Yeah, I’m seeing untagged threads in both forums, too. In fact, the vast majority of FQ threads seem to be untagged.

Here’s Cafe Society in private mode, so it’s got nothing to do with my account. Two fully distinct lists of threads.

Straight Dope Dark, Light and Vincent are all fine.

In the All Tag list please scroll done to when the threads are about 3hrs old and you should see the Panto’s thread. That is first for the no tags list.

Okay, listen.

I had a late night.

Sounds like the problem is cleared up, I’m going to adjust the Title of the thread.

“Johnny Bravo doesn’t know what he’s talking about” would be a pretty good new title.

I was going for as neutral as possible.

That ship probably sailed after I dropped my second set of screenshots from my high horse, but I appreciate the consideration.

The ‘all tags’ address is,
about-this-message-board/8
The ‘no tags’ address is,
about-this-message-board/8/none
The forum address is,
about-this-message-board/8

So, I conclude, ‘no tags’ is also the default view.
