Wow I’d be pissed as hell if they did that to my kid, and I’d take the earrings out ASAP so the holes could heal. Jesus!
The Nuns in the ROI have a Hell of a lot more to answer for than just pierced ears of even 1/10th of the stories about The Laundries are true.
I 'spose you’d take the nails out of Jesus (on the shiny crucifix) so the holes could heal too. Baby Girl!
She carried several documents (the passport, the BC and some other stuff); there were places which asked for the passport first, places which asked for the BC first, places which asked for her green card and would threaten with la migra when she tried to explain that she didn’t have one on account of being American (duh), places which asked for the passport and then the BC, places which after asking for them claimed they were fake, places where the Moron On Duty claimed you can’t be a US citizen if you place of birth is listed as “Colombia” (either after seeing the passport, after seeing the BC or both)…
I’ve explained the difference to more than one person who was supposed to be Christian, or even Catholic; it’s a distinction very few people make. Then again, I’ve also had to explain to a theoretical Catholic how did I recognize that neon sign in a Costa Rican restaurant as being Our Lady of Guadalupe (which may even be more recognizable than Michelangelo’s Pieta). That Lupita wasn’t trashy because it went well with the rest of the very-tiki decor, but it certainly would have been pretty trashy in other places.
Actually piercing the ears of baby girls within days of birth is fairly common in Latin American countries, for all socioeconomic groups. I had my ears pierced (with my mother’s consent) when I was about 5 days old, and no one thought twice about it. I kept taking the earring out of one ear, so my mom ended up taking both earrings out and the piercings healed closed. I had them re-pierced as my 18th birthday present, because I wanted to wear fancy earrings to my senior banquet. When I had my daughter, my mom was shocked when I told her I’d let my daughter decide when she wanted her ears pierced - she waited till she was 7 (I think - not sure at the moment because I’m sleepy). BTW, I’m not offended - it’s a cultural thing, and I’m too tired to get upset about cultural differences at the moment. Off to bed.
When I grow up, I wanna have the ability to tie back my sequential posts… sorry!
Previous Pit thread about piercing the ears of infants. There’s places where it’s unusual and places where it’s standard: isn’t diversity fun?
It’s the “places where the parents aren’t asked” that gets to me.
I used to work with a woman who would drop a peppermint candy in the bottom of a baby bottle of water to feed her kid.
Not content with the trashy Diana ‘b’ Dodi statue in Harrods, Mr Fayed has now erected a truly hideous statue of Michael Jackson outside Fulham FC in London.
A friend of mine used to pump breast milk and leave it with her mother in law while she watched the baby during the day while my friend worked. She also left cloth diapers with her. She found out later (she showed up early one day) that the mother in law (who was from Mexico) had been a) dumping out the breast milk and feeding the baby sugar water instead and b) pouring water on the cloth diapers so they’d seem used, but keeping the kid in disposable diapers all day long.
I can actually totally understand the diaper thing, even if it is obnoxious. I have never heard of Mexicans having a problem with breast milk, though. I would be furious.
And I’ve heard of very young children getting their ears pierced in my culture too, (Hindu, Indian) but not as prevalent as it seems to be in Latino cultures. I only really know because my mother was insistent I not have my ears pierced until I asked for it (which I did round age 7 or 8).
WTF? That’s not even trashy; that’s just… evil. I can sort of understand not wanting to deal with the hassle of cloth diapers (although of course, if that’s what the mom wanted and you agreed to it, then tough), but for the love of Mike, why not just give the baby the breast milk?! It’s more work to make up the sugar water - the milk is right there!
I have to say, as a mom who’s currently pumping and knows how much work it is, I would have a hard time not getting violent if I found out she’d been dumping it.
I know. It made me all stabby when she told me (I had a baby at the time as well, and was pumping myself).
The parents should just be relieved the infant wasn’t a male left in the care of Irish priests. I’m guessing the piercing wouldn’t involve the earlobes.
That was, of course, Red Green’s truck!
Years ago, there was a decades-long campaign in poor countries by the makers of infant formula (mainly Nestle) to convince mothers that bottle feeding was more ‘sanitary’ and modern than breast feeding. Presumably the remnants of that are still around, especially for women of her generation.
I’m confused, what is trashy about what you describe?
I assume you are joking. If you aren’t, studies show that 1 in 4 people are just plain trashy. Look around you the next time you are with a few people, if you don’t see one then…
When I look around I see 3 people admiring my mullet and American flag/Eagle t-shirt.
