China warned the United States that it would cancel a forthcoming summit between the two countries’ leaders if the US approved new arms sales to Taiwan, sources have said.
Xi Jinping, the Chinese president, is expected to meet Donald Trump at the White House on Sept 24 for their third face-to-face meeting in a year.
The US president has placed great importance on the meeting in the run-up to the November midterm elections, hoping it will boost his tumbling approval rating.
However, as it prepared for the summit, China restated its position that the Taiwan issue was a “red line” in bilateral relations between Beijing and Washington, multiple sources told Kyodo News, a Japanese news agency.
In December last year, the Trump administration announced an unprecedented $11bn (£8.1bn) arms sales package for Taiwan. This triggered an angry response in Beijing, which claims that the small self-governing island is part of Chinese territory. In May, the US said it was pausing a separate $14bn arms sale to Taiwan to ensure it had enough weapons for its war on Iran.
The sources said that the Chinese government had threatened to cancel the bilateral meeting this month if any fresh arms sales were approved. The cancellation of such an important meeting would be embarrassing for Mr Trump so close to the midterms.

“We know that she married her brother to try to bring him into the United States,” Mullin said. “There may be more to this, the whole family migration and possibly some illegal activity for them to come to the United States to begin with.” Mullin described the matter as an “ongoing investigation” and said authorities would only proceed if they could establish evidence of wrongdoing.

Officials at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts have warned that the institution is nearing bankruptcy and could be forced to close as early as Tuesday, Sept. 15, according to multiple reports.
In documents obtained by The Washington Post and The New York Times , the Kennedy Center’s current leadership — which was installed by President Donald Trump — argued that the institution faces “certain fiscal collapse” unless the president’s name is added back to its facade. The warning appeared in a 57-page packet that was distributed to the Kennedy Center’s board of trustees ahead of a special meeting scheduled for Sept. 15.
The draft resolution claims that within a few weeks the institution will not be able to pay employees or meet maintenance costs, according to the Post. The draft resolution also says the center is at risk of bankruptcy, but Trump has “offered to step in and raise the necessary funds” to save the institution, the Times reported.
The draft resolution detailed 10 options for placing Trump’s name below the main signage on the front of the center, according to the Times.
“The board understands that without such appropriate recognition it is unlikely that President Trump will provide the fundamental oversight of the renovation of the main building and lead the fiscal rescue of the center,” the draft resolution states, the Times reported.

The Defense Secretary and other political appointees in the department were reported by CNN to be behind a push to get the story of the rescue of two F-15 fighter pilots from behind enemy lines in Iran onto the show.
The episode aired on Sunday, despite both men reportedly being reluctant to do it, and now some have questioned whether the words of one of the airmen, known as Bravo, are true.
“I don’t have this story without faith,” said U.S. Air Force weapons system operator Bravo, one of a crew of two shot down over Iran in April.
“I am not saying faith is [a] replacement for training, but instead it is a boon to training,” he continued. “Training helps us understand what we do. But faith is the backstop of all of my actions during my time in Iran, and the way that guides what I do, day in and day out.”
Online users doubted the story’s accuracy.

The 90,000-square-foot ballroom is set to replace the East Wing of the White House, which was demolished last October despite the Trump administration’s earlier claims that the new construction would not touch existing structures.
The demolition has sparked backlash from historians, preservationists and members of the public over the national history that vanished with the structure, sparking legal challenges over whether a president can alter the historic grounds without congressional approval.

Former U.S. Coast Guard contractor Peter Souders is allowed to proceed with his First Amendment lawsuit against the Trump administration, claiming he was fired over posts related to the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Souders, an engineer and project manager for government contractor Advanced Concepts Enterprises Inc. (ACES) who began working at the Coast Guard in July 2025, alleges that he was fired in September 2025 “in retaliation for his private speech on a matter of significant national interest and attention,” citing a violation of his First Amendment rights .
In November 2025, he filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, specifically naming the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense—including now former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth—as the defendants. Two other officials, Michael Cogar of the Defense Department and Greyson McGill at DHS, were also named.
On Friday, Donald Trump-appointed Judge Timothy Kelly wrote in a new legal filing that he disagreed with defendants that Souders’s First Amendment claim so [sic] belongs in the Court of Federal Claims, rather than the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia where it was filed.

“The government is unlikely to succeed on the merits of its challenge to the District Court’s preliminary injunction,” the court said in its brief, one-paragraph order.

NEW YORK, Sept 13 (Reuters) - The death toll in Pennsylvania’s measles outbreak rose this weekend with a county coroner’s report of a woman’s death from complications related to the disease.
The coroner’s office of western Pennsylvania’s Jefferson County reported that a 40-year-old woman died on Saturday from complications associated with measles. The commonwealth has seen an outbreak of the highly-infectious disease, adding to a resurgence of measles in the United States as official data shows declining U.S. vaccination rates.
The coroner’s office said it was working with the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
“This is a heartbreaking loss for the family and an unfortunate reminder that measles can be a serious and potentially life-threatening disease,” Coroner Greg Furlong said in a statement posted on Facebook.
The state Department of Health said on Friday that it has confirmed 676 measles cases across Pennsylvania in 2026, with 124 measles-related hospitalizations.

Two American teenagers were brutally attacked by ICE agents while they said they were on their way to enlist in the Marine Corps.
The two teens said they were filming an ICE-involved incident happening at a nearby elementary school in Alamo, Texas, last week. It was then that federal agents used force and pepper-sprayed the pair.
Federal agents were seen on video pulling one teen from the car and punching him several times in the face while he was face-down on the pavement. The person filming the scene appears to repeatedly yell at the agents that the boys are minors.
The other teen, Luis Ochoa, 17, recounted the harrowing experience to Telemundo . After being pepper-sprayed by the agents, the Spanish-language broadcaster reported that he got away to a nearby fast food restaurant to ask for help.
But he said that when agents did eventually get to him, he repeatedly informed the ICE agents he was a citizen, but was told, “I don’t give a damn… Your parents can’t help you now.”
The pair were then held in ICE custody for eight hours.
Ochoa’s mother said the moment her son was detained was one of the most agonizing moments of her life, as she feared that they would take him to Mexico.
She also told Telemundo that her son is now apparently rethinking his decision to enlist, “How are they supposed to serve a country that doesn’t even uphold their basic rights?”

Countries around the world will reimburse the U.S. for the cost of helping oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz, President Donald Trump said Monday.
Trump, in a Truth Social post , said the United States is bearing costs that benefit other nations by helping keep oil moving through the Persian Gulf waterway amid the continuing conflict with Iran.
“Oil is flowing through the Hormuz Strait,” Trump wrote. “The Countries of the World, which have been no help to us whatsoever, should, and will, reimburse the United States of America when this SCAM Confligration is all over.”
“We are doing it much more for others, than we are for ourselves, and we have been for Generations!” he added.
Trump did not provide details about how other countries would reimburse the United States or what costs would be included.
