Heh…host segment: “We are not the droids you’re looking for…” “You are not the droids I’m looking for…”
Where does the line, sometimes used by Joel/Mike and the Bots, “Friends are here from…” originate?
Could you give an example? I don’t remember that one.
According to The Annotated MST:
Why was I not aware of this site before??? I think I’ll spend a few happy hours surfing.
Yeah, the site creator even pimps The Straight Dope in the site FAQ, so I figure she very likely has posted to this very thread. Damned if I’m going to go back through it and look to find out though.
Whoever it is: congratulations on your magnificent and useful contribution to this weird obsession.
That site is AWESOME!
MST3K 10.13 - Diabolik
Episode Thoughts: A really high note to go out on. I’m sorry to see the show end, but if it had to end, I wouldn’t end it any other way. The host segments are great, especially the final one. The movie is cheesy, but not horrible - I think the spy films they’ve done have ALWAYS been fun.
Movie : Europe’s famous super-criminal, Diabolik (assayed by John Philip Law, AKA ‘Kalgon’ of Space Mutiny fame) matches wits with Inspector Ginko and the local mafia head, Valmont. (Adolfo Celi, last seen to MST fans in Operation Double 007.) Through increasingly improbable luck and the occasional cheesy disguise or gadget, Diabolik gets the upper hand again and again - stealing treasury money, priceless emeralds - until finally being undone when Ginko actually manages to do something clever.
Memorable Bits : Money sex. “Is that Stud, coming?” Diabolik’s disembodied laughter and latex fetish. The ‘Electric Ladyland’ sketch artist device. Catapulting his clothes off of a castle. The Bots savor the final movie sign. Spiiny credits. Di Di Da.
Intro: Mike finds the SOL Employee handbook. Pearl hooks up a joystick to the SOL and screws with Mike and the Bots - only to break it and accidentally trigger the re-entry protocol. Brain Guy is powerless to stop it because Pearl poured Mountain Dew in his brainpan.
Host Segments: Packing up to leave - Servo begins self-destructing the other hims running around; Pearl is working on cleaning up the castle, and discussing where she and Bobo and Brain Guy are going to go next; Mike shows Tom his Earth photo album, but Crow is scared of Earth, so Mike sings a little song.
Finale: Re-Entry. Pearl and the minions sing ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary.’ We learn that Gypsy subsequently founds a profitable company on Earth, ConGypsCo, while Mike and the Bots share a tiny one bedroom apartment, and sit on the couch watching bad movies. ‘The Crawling Eye’ comes on, and almost automatically, they begin to exhibit their conditioned behavior.
Signature Riffs:
<Tom> The Hyena’s stuck on.
<Crow> Oh no, is this a Pink Floyd video?
<Mike> Malcolm Forbes and friends go camping.
<Mike> They’re going over to John Steed’s house for a kegger.
<Tom> Some movies just won’t stop and ask for directions.
<Crow> The true story of Spin-Art!
<Mike> Reverse Raccoon Man!
<Tom> (as Diabolik) Ha-ha, my licorice suit held up well!
<Tom> (as Diabolik) This will fool them unless they look at it.
(Diabolik shares a liplock with his girl)
<Tom> This is just a good samaritan he met in the tunnel.
<Crow> She’s a GREAT samaritan. (Line of the show.)
<Crow> It makes the hall to our theater look efficient.

<Mike> Gerrymandering, actual footage.
<Crow> (as Diabolik) Omaha Beach. June 5th. I was early.
<Mike> Welcome, Dr. Meachum. (Riffback!)
<Tom> (singing) It’s not unusual … to steal trucks, from anyone.
<Crow> You know, nobody goes to this kind of trouble anymore for Frankincense or Myrrh.
<Crow> (as Diabolik) Ha-ha! I’m useless against your weapons. (See Prince of Space)
<Mike> He’s a golden Gumby!
<Tom> (singing) Gold-Everything!
<Mike> (as Ginko) Well, you guys never tricked me, so I guess it’s okay.
<Crow> He’s basically an eyebrow delivery system.
(Final Riff - as ‘Fine’ appears on the screen)

(Last line from the Mads)
<Pearl> (as she unplugs the connection to the Satellite) Look, Nelson, move on. I am.
(Last Line)
<Crow> (watching the Crawling Eye) This movie looks kinda familiar, doesn’t it?
sniff
Fare thee well wonderful series and reviews. I and my own friends had our own weekly last hurrah of these series that ended last year.
Thanks for all the great write-ups, CandidGamera.
Can we start over again, with The Crawling Eye?
Thanks for going to all the effort on this thread. It must’ve been quite time-consuming.
Anyway, because the last film featured on MST 3K was Diabolik, I’ll post a link to the Beastie Boys’ video for “Body Movin’”–a cheesy homage to a cheesy movie.
The reviews were really the time-consuming part - watching the episodes was pleasant enough, and taking the notes at the same time not too burdensome - but transferring the data into readable form here, while keeping my StraightDope session alive - that was the tricky part.
I’m glad that these reviews, started when there was no trace of MST around, have taken us through to the point where we’ve got Film Crew, Cinematic Titanic, Rifftrax, and a new release of the MST3K : The Movie DVD.
And no, I’m not going to start reviewing those.
But…maybe someone else could? Or several someones?
Excellent thread and a good job by CandidGamera!
It worked out well as I am about to watch the last few remaining episodes in season 10 myself. My watching schedule has pretty much matched CG’s. Sometimes I’ve been ahead, sometimes behind. I usually take them to work with me (I work overseas and am stuck in a camp for 35 days at a time) where a friend of mine and I watch them after hours. Even though I like the show it has been a chore at times, I can’t imagine what it has been like for CG having to document everything.
Now it is time to check what episodes I’ve missed. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen almost every episode, but I haven’t gone through my disks to see if I have every episode to see.
Bon Voyage, SOL!
Diabolik! was indeed a fine exit. The flick was hilarious even without riffing. Our protagonists’ over-the-top plans and gadgetry as well as his overdone physical manner had me laughing all on their own. I loved the “exhiliration gas” and the “Anti-exhiliration gas capsules.” M&tB were icing on the cake.
“the movie’s circling the drain already.”
[sung to the opening movie theme] “Deep, deep tongue…”
CandidGamera, I salute you and your efforts here. I learned things about the show and it’s subject movies (Like the Kalgon/Diabolik link) that blew me away. I also was able to get ahold of a bunch of episodes that I had never seen thanks to contacts on this thread.
Thanks again!
Sniff, this was a great thread. But, although the thread is over(-ish), the torch is being passed. Not just to Cinematic Titanic, Rifftrax, et al, but to a new generation. Our family just got back from a couple weeks in Egypt and Amsterdam, I loaded up my laptop with all of the Gamera episodes and a couple random other ones and introduced the 6 & 8 year old to the turtle spinning madness. They were immediately in love (probably because Gamera is friend to children everywhere) and demanded their fix like good little junkies.
CandidGamera, you don’t know me, and I’m not sure I’ve posted to this thread before, but I’ve been reading it (as a lurker) pretty much since the beginning. I’ve been an MST3K fan for well over 15 years, and was an early member of the Info Club (number three-thousand something). I just wanted to say thanks for a great thread, you did all MSTies proud with this monumental effort. Congrats and very well done!
Keep circulating the tapes!
Thanks again CandidGamera! Fine job. And if I loved you any more I’d have to buy you a walk-in diamond…
Thanks, folks.
I hope it’s been useful and interesting.
