Is there a newscaster today who is able to say “Memorial Day” without adding “the unofficial start of summer!!” ?? (Like the way the day after Thanksgiving must always be described as “the busiest shopping day of the year”) OK, maybe some newscaster in Madascar or Sydney won’t say that. And for that matter, why don’t we have an unofficial start of Winter??
But I digress. It is unofficially Summer. What are your unofficial summer plans?
Alas, for me, until I know what the heck is going on at work regarding our impending de-manning process, I can’t make plans. Either I’ll retire or I won’t. In both cases, we’d like to take some sort of vacation, but any concrete planning is impossible until I know if I’ll be employed or not. So, my summer plans are that I plan to make plans when I can. In the meantime, I’ll just keep on keepin’ on. We’ve got some work to do to the boat and a basement to gut again, and the usual chores to deal with. And I think my mom invited us to a pool party in June. And my nephew is visiting in July, but he’ll be staying with my daughter. And, um, I dunno…
Your turn! Happy Monday! Happy Memorial Day! Happy Happy Happy!!!
I’m reasonably sure that neither Sidney nor Madagascar celebrate Memorial Day, therefore newscasters there probably don’t consider this the unofficial start of summer. Or rather, winter, since both are on that other side of the world.
In Spain you aren’t supposed to take your coat off until May 40th, because while Spring has been making temperatures spring for a while, we still have a few bounces left.
My plans for the summer are working June and July, will probably be off the first forthnight in August, as many companies close furing those two weeks and the 15th is a national holiday. I seem to recall my new client does close in August. Will probably stay in the same job for a few weeks later, as my job consists of covering up a hole in the organization while they look for a permanent person who I’ll stay to train.
I just got a call from my least favorite agents. This one did ask whether it was a good time (most people in her agency don’t), but no “are you looking for work” - they assume you’ll be. I hate talking with them but like being able to say “no” to them. And before someone asks: all I can see is either “unidentified number” or a UK number, which could be any of a zillion agencies. Heck, unidentified number could be a Spanish corporate number, too.
“Ne’er cast a clout 'til May is out”, as the old saying goes. Therefore not a single clout has been cast at Fortress Fae. It’s definitely not summer here, it’s chilly and wet but then again, it’s a public holiday so it’s completely wrong to expect a bit of decent weather, right?
Summer planning has been difficult this year, 'im indoors currently has a job but we don’t know how long that will last or when the next contract will appear so it’s usually quite difficult to make plans not knowing whether he’ll actually be in the country or not.
Summer is also the time for music festivals but this year the bands we want to see are playing at festivals we either can’t get to for one reason or another, or they’re already sold out, or the dates just don’t work. At the moment we have plans for a long weekend in York with friends next month, I have a week in Kent and Sussex with my mother doing family stuff in July, and we have booked a trip to Jamaica in September.
We were toying with the idea of a weekend in Scotland visiting his family and also a trip to Paris, but nothing is definite on either of those as yet. Summer is still a bit up in the air!
Yeah, I know, and I deliberately chose both for that reason. What I don’t know is why American newscasters feel compelled to beat us over the head with these meaningless observations and comments. But that’s neither here nor there.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffienatin’ YAWN 'Tis 73 Amurrkin out with a predicted high of 95 so, “unofficial” or not, it is Summer here in south Jawja. Also, it’s Memorial Day so yank out those white shoes unless you already did that on Easter which is acceptable even though it does make Miss Manners go into a tizzy if one does before Memorial Day.
As for plans, well, I got none. Goin’ on vacation ain’t a big deal and I really can’t afford one. Besides, I have a pool, so every weekend in Summer is a vacation. I likes my pool! Also, there’s stuff that needs doin’ around da cave such as repaintin’ the walls and I could use some new floorin’. Don’t know how much of that will happen, however.
Today, I need to defilthyfy the place so Ima clean da cave. Yeah, that’s a wild way to spend a holiday. OYKW needs to get to his place to do laundry and hopefully he’ll spend some time defilthyfyin’ cause I just know he needs to do that. Later on we’ll go have dindin or sump’n. Then, tomorrow, alas, back to irk!
Not sure what are plans are. I had a huge fight with Mr. Lissar last night, didn’t sleep all night, and Nat’s been sobbing and miserable all night, on and off, and has gotten up an hour and a half early. I fell asleep at five, and was woken by TomKitten to nurse every half hour.
I’m working a half day, then going to “M’s Pool and Grille” for hot dogs and beerverages. Wednesday is my 1st day off in 2 weeks, and next week is vacation, I’m going to the beach for my roommate’s pre-50th birthday. I’m gonna have to find a new home for Gordie, he’s determined to provoke my roommate’s 150lbs Sheppard into killing him. I’ll pay shipping if a Mumper wants him.
It’s still spring here. We’ll be lucky if it gets up to 60° today.
We’re going to the race track (Emerald Downs) We met an owner/trainer at dinner the other night. He gave us admission tickets. Yesterday, two of his horses each can in second. He only has one running today, but we’ll stay for all the races, or until our money runs out.
**doggio **- good luck placing Gordie. Sorry I can’t help you there, but as soon as Scruffy goes to her reward, we shall remain a dog-free zone. For a while, anyway.
gt, I feel like gardening today - I have several hostas I really need to move. But it’s gonna be hot and sweaty and I’m such a delicate flower…
I’m finally showered, dressed, and breakfasted. I pulled the sewing machine out of the closet, so I guess it’s inevitable - I need to start working on the sail cover. I just don’t feel like it today. I wanna veg on my last day of a glorious long weekend… I need to run the vacuum also - Ziva is a shed machine.
(((Li-Li))) I hope today turns into a better day for you.
It’s gray and cool. As I’m only about 30/35 miles south of **picu, **our weather is pretty much the same.
The kids (my daughter, her sweetie and their friend) are coming down to BBQ with us today. I didn’t think they’d want to come down with tomorrow being a workday and all, but as soon as my daughter saw I was making potato salad, she was all over that! She loves it. I think it’s pretty simple fare, really, but I’m glad she loves it. Mine is the only one.
I will have to get my ass in gear and tidy up a bit around here. I also want to make a dry rub for my ribs and rub them down.
As for plans for the summer; well we really don’t have any. We’ll be doing a staycation, I guess. The only place we’re going for sure is WSU to drop my son off in August. Plus, we’ll have to drive him over there for his orientation.
Our friends are still very considerably bummed we’re not going to Kauai with them, but we just don’t have the extra cash to afford that luxury, with no thanks to Uncle Sam and his greed.
We have carpenter ants in the kitchen. Want to join me in a thorough house flamethrowering?
The start of summer here is when the last slackers get their tomato plants in the ground. My right-side neighbor is digging up a garden plot behind her porch today, so it’s summer now.
As soon as I get the last three weeks of Wait Wait, Don’t Tell Me on my mp3 player, I’m heading back out on the porch with my coffee and my book and my skein of Really Ugly Loud Yarn that will become a Really Ugly and Loud Kitchen Towel. (It’s orange, bright pink, and bright yellow. Eye-bleedingly bright.)
Takin’ a break from cave defilthyfication. WHEW! Da cave is all dusted, the bathrooms are clean, sheets washed and on the bed and the kitchen is clean. Also I vacuumed out the garage and back porch. What’s left is vacuumin’ da cave and moppin’. For though now I am relaxatin’ with an Arnold Palmer.
{{{LiLi}}} hope things get better soon.
Good luck on findin’ Gordie a new home doggio.
Good luck at the horse track picu!
Make the chruch garden all purty gt. Don’t forget to look out for gorillas!
ETA: Spaz maybe you can talk the carpenter ants into buildin’ some shelves for the kitchen?
I’s smoking away. Just about time to re-stoke the fahr, too. In other news, I also just finished mowing the yahd. I know how to spend a holiday, don’t I?
The main seam on the sail cover is done. The snaps will be delivered on Thursday, theoretically. Next weekend is supposed to be a bit cooler, so I’m thinking that’s when I’ll be hauling the machine and stuff to the boat where I can tailor it precisely. Good times…
Sorry I haven;t poked my head into the MMP for awhile! (((lLiLi))) Hang in there. I’ve been through bedbugs, they can be survived.
GT, Yeah I did Hope she’ll be ok!
Going to Florida to see my baby sister graduate, and will be moving at the end of summer (Happy happy Joy Joy)
As for today, think I’ll go see if the Pool is open, it’s supposed to open today!
Happy Monday and Memorial day, all!
I’ve just about got the kitchen squared away. It took me a bit longer, because I gave the new pots and pans their first washing out of the box. I had used some, but not all.
Now they’re all clean and put away and I pulled out my old set and boxed it up for my son. He can either take them to school so he doesn’t have to sign out pots and pans in the kitchen, or can use them when he gets his own place. I asked if he wanted them, and he did, so that’s one less thing for him to worry about.
My little break is just about over, I’ll have to get back on cleaning patrol.
Yes it does, but temperatures are still bouncy well into June. Yesterday was sunny and warm. This morning dawned raining but not windy (what’s called “calabobos” or “xirimiri” here, a soft rain which doesn’t drench you unless you insist in standing in it without an umbrella). By 10am it was hot. Noon, cloudy and windy. Now it’s cloudy but the wind has stopped again. Spring, spring, sproinnnnng!
This is a very educational MMP. So far I’ve learned how to say “hasta el cuarenta de Mayo no te quites el sayo” in English from BooFae; that bedbugs is actually the name for chinches and not just a figure of speech from LiLi (hang in there and I hope things get better soon) and that hostas are called hostas in English too from FCM.
I’ve got my hotel for this week all set up. Special rates, and when I get there I want to speak with them about keeping them for the next weeks - I have been in that hotel before and like it better than the other one in the area, and since I’m not going out for dinner anyway I’d rather stay close to work than have to commute into and out of Bilbao with another million people in what seems to be two million cars.
Last week I went and bought a new cellphone, which involved changing companies. The new company is one I’ve had before in France and the UK, and had good service in both places; the old one (my pals from Telefónica) has been texting and calling me once or twice every day to convince me to stay. What I really wanted was a new phone with GPS (not with internet), the one with the biggest screen was from this other company, and this pain in the ass 'tude is great at pushing me away. I have finally learned to say “no” to my mother, I am not going to cave in to some dude calling and whining “oh but why are you leaving us?” If it was a boyfriend instead of a phone company I’d be legally entitled to call the cops on them for Og’s sake!
The interesting part is that, since the change is effective on Wednesday but I won’t be able to pick up the new phone until Saturday, I’m not sure whether I’ll have a cell those 3 days or not. Guess I’ll find out if anybody happens to call me!
“unofficial”? Heck, around here lately, the weather fluctuates by 40 degrees every couple days. Tomorrow could very well be the unofficial end of winter.
But today is nice, it’s 82, climbing to 90 something.
Our summer will be dedicated to house-sprucing in anticipation of the October wedding of the CatKid.
(((((LiLi))))) - been there, done that, got a heap of t-shirts…hope things get better today though.
gt - a “clout” is an item of clothing, I don’t think it’s any particular item, just a bit of clothing. It basically means that you shouldn’t take your winter layers off just yet because it’s not warm enough. Incidentally, the “May” referred to is the common name for hawthorn which should bloom before the end of May.
I’ve had a lazy day watching stuff on the tellybox that I’d recorded recently, didn’t fancy going out anywhere as it’s been raining almost all day, and I couldn’t be bothered defilthifying the house. Og knows, it could do with a proper clean, but since the other person who lives here and contributes far more to the mess and clutter than I do apparently isn’t bothering his arse with any cleaning, I don’t see why I should. He’s already left me a sinkful of dirty dishes that he allegedly “forgot” to wash.
