The Walking Dead; 3.02 "Sick" (open spoilers)

Yes, they are all infected and will all turn when they die.

But a zombie bite will cause a fever that will kill you within a day or two. Tiny was going to die and turn within the next few days. Rick presumably saved Hershel from this fate by hacking off his leg above the bite. They couldn’t do that for Tiny because of where the bite was.

I assume it’s that everyone has the virus (or whatever) so when they die they’ll eventually turn into walkers but also if a walker bites you it accelerates the process so you might only have minutes or hours to live before you zombify/walkericate.

So a zombie bite (or scratch?) is lethal in and of itself. Got it.

It’s like we have two different things going on here IMO then. Everyone’s going to turn into a zombie when they die (which we already know) but zombies have some sort of venom/poison that will kill you if you’re bitten. Basically being bitten by a zombie is really no different then being bitten by a venomous snake or rabid animal or shot in the chest.

Carl’s not in the cell block!

Good point. So far all the bite victims we’ve seen have either died from their injuries; been killed/suicide, or died offscreen. Jim was still alive over 24 hrs after he was biten; so the infection can take at least that long to kill. Reanimation time varies wildly from several minutes (Shane) to 8-12 hrs (Amy); the infection could have similiar varibility. And Hershel is still the oldest member of the group, and they still have to worry about normal infections killing him.

My personal fanwank about the “we’re all infected but zombie bites kill us” thing is that a zombie bite, with its additional virus AND all the rotten meat and bacteria in its mouth from eating people, amplifies the existing infection to a lethal level, to kill the person and then reanimate them.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Any idea who was watching Carol practicing on the corpse?

Thanks!

I was glad to see the show had the balls to just have Rick kill off the head prisoner. I was worried that it was going to turn into sparing him and having him become a nuissance.

That said, he actually went too far the other way. The other prisoners hadn’t yet shown that they would be a problem - it was clear that just the ringleader blatantly dangerous. The guy with the bat - who got chased outside - only acted in self defense since he figured our crew was going to kill all of them right on the spot. I don’t understand the need to kill the rest of them - and especially to chase the guy down through uncleared area like he’s an immediate threat.

I can’t tell if the show is just having our characters act stupidly or if they’re trying to show us that Rick is so hardened by the world that he made the decision to kill them all just to be rid of any potential problems. I’ll assume the latter, since the show is far better so far this season about our characters not being retarded.

Rick chasing him wasn’t real smart, but was realistic - it’s a lot easier to be smart sitting in your chair at home as opposed to reacting to the moment. Plus, the prisoner presumably knows the place better - so if he got away, he could pretty easily hide and then pop out to harass/kill Rick’s people (assuming he didn’t become zombie food).

Locking him in the yard was probably necessary, but, damn, Rick has gotten cold (just like Shane wanted him to).

I meant a more diplomatic “Look, you guys seem alright, but you understand that crazy eyes had to bite it, right? Let’s talk” rather than chasing the guy down and killing him. That guy hadn’t shown any hostile intent.

And yeah, I brought that up last thread. Essentially the show decided to make Shane the bad guy even though Shane was consistently right in all their disputes. But then they turn around and suddenly their new-found competance as a group essentially is the result of Rick acting more like Shane. So it doesn’t make thematic sense for Shane to be the bad guy, unless the point of this season is “look how corrupted Rick is”

Shane was the bad guy because he had become horribly unhinged, not because he was right or wrong.

Didn’t one of the other prisoners besides the leader admit he either knew about what the leader would do or that they were actually collaborating on the plan? I think so.

Rick with the machete in the laundry room.

Walking Dead’s version of CLUE.

So glad to see him take out crazy eyed dude and not turn it into an angstfest. Also liked that Daryl 100% had his back before and after.

The scene with the “Walker-Tossing” (fun for the whole family!) got me thinking, they should have some sort of chain of command set up in case Rick gets incapacitated/bitten/goes zombie

If the tossed walker got a bite in, it would have taken Rick out of the game, I’m thinking a good COC would be;
Daryl
T-Dog
Glenn
Maggie
Carol
Herschell
Carl
Zombie baby

Lori gets to be Purina Zombie Chow in every COC situation, I’m surprised she’s lasted this long (yes, I really hate Lori, how could you tell? )

Thought it was a fantastic episode, and I love the way Rick has evolved over these last 10 months or so. Watching the prisoners try their “riot act” on the zombies was hilarious. I’m stumped as to who was watching Carol from a distance while she was practicing on the zombie girl. Maybe that Governor that Andrea and Michonne are going to meet?

So am I missing something about the CPR? I mean, Herschel wasn’t breathing but he wasn’t dead yet either. I don’t see how this was a huge risk to Lori, or if it was, then the whole point was that she was willing to risk her life to save Herschel’s? Because Herschel saved her son’s life?

I don’t think ‘The Governor’ would be lurking in the bushes breathing like Darth Vader (if I remember correctly). Maybe Merle?

I really like how Carl has evolved from a little pain in the butt who has to be watched all the time to a real helpful character. Liked how he was holding the gun ready, watching Herschel.

Still makes no sense, but I guess calling it fanwank pretty much means that.

I mean, they come out COVERED in zombie blood every time they go outing. Blood in the eyes, in the mouth, cross contamination when eating, etc. Really they should all have died from zombie fever by now.

Also, I’m not seeing their end game here.

They refuse to accept new members or coo-operate with others in any way, ever. What do they think it’s going to happen to them? They’ll keep dropping one by one until they are all dead.

I’d be trying to recruit new members in order to SURVIVE.

The kid is still an idiot kid. He risked his life, and possibly others who would have had to go rescue his idiot @ss. He’s becoming a typical teenager. Desperate to prove he is a “man” while making stupid, horrible, life-threatening mistakes. He can’t see the big picture yet. He still thinks the world revolves around him, or that it should. Mark my words it’s going to take him being the cause of someone’s death before he starts to grow up.

Lori needs Herschel as well. She needs him to safely deliver her baby, especially if it’s by C-section.
