The Walking Dead; 3.02 "Sick" (open spoilers)

Carl has already “caused,” or at least contributed to someone’s death: Dale’s. In Season 2, Carl wandered off into the woods and agitated a zombie which ended up following him back to the farm, where it killed Dale.

I felt like Carl was affected by that, but went for “I need to do better” rather than “I should leave this to the grown ups”.

Ooh, yeah, Merle makes a certain amount of sense.

Thinking about it from the prisoners’ perspective, our Intrepid Gang of Adventurers don’t really come off as the good guys here - they storm in, they say they’ll just move right in, they take half the food, they start killing the guys who were in the prison already - not very neighbourly.

So, the people that Michonne and Andrea are going to see have a military-style compound going on? Interesting.

Completing your list:

Daryl
T-Dog
Glenn
Maggie
Carol
Herschell
Carl
Zombie baby
Any Random Zombie
Plastic Fork
…then Lori

:)

Personally, I’d leave Lori off the list altogether. Just shoot her the second Rick goes down. Hell, shoot her the second Rick is in danger. Hell, shoot her when Rick goes out back to take a dump. Hell, have Rick just shoot her.

Or all of the above.

And I think we’re definitely meant to see them that way. Compared to Our Gang, the prisoners are cleaner, better-fed, and much more psychologically normal. (With the possible exception of Tomas). Consider the first questions Big Tiny asked - “What about my mom? My kids? My old lady? Can I call them?” The guy was serving time, but he’s still way more normal than Rick and company.

Viewed in this light, even Tomas starts to look a lot more normal and reasonable. Yah, we saw him take down Big Tiny - but in truth, that was probably the right call. As to trying to take out Rick - well, see above. Rick is a dangerous and heavily-armed stranger throwing his weight around - if I thought I could get away with it, I’d probably want him dead, too. And Tomas lived in a relatively small cafeteria with the other guys for ten months - we don’t know that they were friends, as such, but they clearly got along without violence. The dude is not some raging psychopath.

Rick’s gang might not recognize it yet, but they’ve become thoroughly mad, bad, and dangerous to know.

I had the same thought. Farming without tractors is hard work. I think Rick’s lawman background probably made him more suspicious of the convicts then other people might have been. On the other hand, they are convicts, so some suspicion seems justified - let’s not forget that fun group they met at the bar in season two, who were presumably upstanding citizens prior to the collapse of society.

My guess is that they’ll eventually come to some sort of detente with the two guys left in cellblock D and figure out how to work with them.

Speaking of that cellblock - it looked like someone had gone in and shot everyone there in the head? If I remember correctly, they were all pretty much lying half in/half out of their cells with what appeared to be head shot splatter. I wonder who did that?

Rick’s people? We saw them clearing cells last week, so it makes sense for them to use an area that was already cleared. It also explains Darryl saying ‘I’m sorry’, if he was the one who killed them.

I really liked this episode; I hope they continue like this. I’m liking how Carol is stepping up and pulling her weight, but I can’t shake the feeling that she’d be happier with Rick gone, and might not be above trying to get rid of him. Especially with Rick shrugging off bits of his decency to keep the group alive. When she nearly shot Rick while clearing out the perimeter, that might not have been an accident.

I usually try very hard to avoid the teasers for the upcoming episodes, but a friend who saw it has inferred that the Governor may be showing up in the next episode.

True, and they were largely untouched by the chaos, as they had no idea how much society had broken down. Rick and the others have had to do terrible things to survive, while the prisoners were locked up safe with plenty of food, expecting help to come any day now. I agree that Rick’s group was extremely hostile to the prisoners and that probably didn’t help things. I get the feeling that Tomas would have been hostile toward them no matter what, though.

As far as Tomas, though, he definitely showed signs of being a crazy psychopath, or at least a violent loose cannon who was going to be a threat to Rick and his team. He didn’t just put Big Tiny down, he savaged him well beyond the point of “making sure he was dead.” Tomas also showed a tendency to go for his gun during discussions and was obviously looking for any weakness in Rick’s group so he could take them out. I think Rick had his doubts from the moment he met Tomas and they just kept building up. Then Tomas blatantly tried to get him killed and Rick knew he had to take him out. Chasing after and killing the other guy was a dick move, though.

I assume it was the guards/army (same guys we saw wearing riot gear and gas masks). Probably went through systematically shooting the prisoners before they became zombies.

That’s what I assumed as well. Until Foghorn Methhorn said “These were good men” I though maybe this was a higher security wing and the guards had executed the prisoners when things were getting out of control.
(I have vague memory of one of the prison affiliated dopers mentioning that there could be a sort of ‘end times’ plan at prisons that included summary executions of the most dangerous prisoners)
Until someone else pointed it out… those prisoners were WAY too groomed to have been locked in the cafeteria for nearly a year.

They would have had water, for shaving and washing up, scissors to trim their hair.

I wondered if the one (?) white guy should have been more pale, until I remembered that I don’t spend a lot of time outdoors and my skin tone doesn’t change much.

Heh. I like that.

So, was the walk-in freezer their 10 month toilet, or just 10 months of spoiled meat?

Also, what are the odds that the prison still has any working generators?

I’m forgetting – are there only two prisoners left alive in the prison now? The white meth-head, and the black guy who refused to beg for his life?

Basically:

  1. Everyone who dies for any reason becomes a zombie.

  2. Zombie bites and scratches cause an infection that is fatal.

Both these facts are true but unrelated to each other that was why Tiny was doomed (which was a shame because I liked him).

They do seem to be a little inconstant s to what exactly about in the scratch or bite causes the infection because they never seem to mind being covered with Zombie gore but still…
Rick had to run after that guy because he didn’t know what he was capable of and they needed to neutralize him one way or the other.

ETA: Yes I believe those are the only two surviving prisoners that we know of.

A secure installation would have Un-interuptable Power Supply or emergeny power supply, meaning it would automatically kick over to generators as soon as they lost power from the grid. Unless someone shut the generator down, it would have already went through all it’s fuel.

but if they could some fuel (probably diesel), the generators should still work.

I have a general question about the show, since I only recently started watching regularly. How many series regulars have died so far? There are currently ten people in Rick’s group, right?

Yeah, something about what plans prisons had for dealing with the aftermath of a nuclear attack during the Cold War. From what I remember there really weren’t any detailed plans beyond “secure inmates in bomb shelter”, and vague plans to use inmate labor to clear rubble & dig mass graves. I imagine most of the prison staff would’ve gone AWOL pretty early on.

She’s trying to attach herself to Daryl, who’s Rick’s 2nd in command. Maybe she has hopes that if Rick dies she’ll get to be the useless bitch who’s constantly sowing discord & endangering herself & putting others at risk without contributing anything of value.

Where would they be getting water from? Without power the kitchen taps would run dry; wouldn’t they? Or would there be water cooler style kegs of water in the pantry?

Both.

I don’t buy the prisoners would’ve been quite so shocked to hear about society collapsing & the government falling. Ten months with no attempt at rescue, not to mention things were so bad that a guard gave an inmate his gun (of course Tomas could’ve just been lying about how he got the gun :smack:).

They’re the only two we know about. There could be others.

Let’s see:

Shane
Merle
Carol’s Husband and Daughter
Dude zombified and killed on the highway
Lady who died at the CDC
Mom? and son from the farm
Guy who shot Carl
Andrea’s sister

So at least 10. I’m sure I’m forgetting some.

I think the water would continue to flow unless someone from DWP turned it off before becoming a zombie or being eaten
