Things that go bump in the MMP

Happy Sunday!

Nice 54 degrees at the park this morning. Supposed to get up to 82 today.

Another two and a half hours at the park this morning. A new dog came in and Echo was a little pissy, but nothing serious.
Some dogs we hadn’t seen for a long time came in as well. So nice to see old friends.

I have to finish laundry today. My son will need to wash clothes later as he has to go to irk tomorrow, so I need to get my stuff out of his way.
Part of my subscribe and save order came yesterday and needs to be put away. Some more is coming today, and the bulk of it will be here tomorrow.
The dogs will be happy. Their favorite treats will be here tomorrow.
I should have checked the list of stuff coming, I’m getting a bunch of stuff I could have skipped this month. It’s stuff that’ll keep so not really a problem.

Glad you didn’t have more damage Red.

When I lived in a rowhouse, my cat asked to go out back. It was raining, so she went to the front door to go out. To her annoyance, it was raining out front too. If looks could kill, I would have been dead. I control the weather you know.
I think it took her a bit to figure out that the outside through the backdoor was the same as the outside through the front door.

Glad you had a good time with the grandkids Taters.

Once again, you display more maturity and common sense than Mom or I, which is why we have piles and stacks of shiny things sitting around.

Shoe is the one who uses pointy needles! The open canvas I use allows me to use blunt tapestry needles. I can still poke my fingers, but I have to work at it. Hey, didn’t you recently finish an afghan? I’ve been waiting for a picture…

I was a pack a day tobacco smoker for over 45 years. I quit smoking the week after I retired (I had to smoke up all the cigarettes I already had because they are too expensive to waste). Thanks to being in the habit of not eating while I’m stitching, I didn’t gain weight because of increased snacking. I do have a very lumpy piece because my tension levels were all over the place, but that’s a small price to pay.

I do wish I had learned to tat. Mom and Grandma could, but they were both left handed and I just didn’t get it. I didn’t get knitting either but Mom was able to teach me to crochet. Now that there’s youtube, I could probably learn to knit but we have a kitten who can barely control himself when I’m stitching, big forbidden balls of yarn would just be mean.

We once had a very dog aggressive cat, and a pretty passive St. Bernard dog. The cat understood that we were fond of the dog for some strange reason, so basically ignored the dog when she was inside. If the cat saw the dog out in the yard, he would snarl and growl and just turn into a big jerk. As soon as Brandy stepped back through the door, she became the inside dog and was OK again. That outside dog needed to go, though.

There’s a ton of tatting videos on YouTube as well. That’s how I learned. You make me wanna grab my shuttles!

However I’m still in the middle of a spinning kick😄. And planning to go weaving with my handspun. But tatting is nice. And @shoe, anything fewer than 10 projects going counts as moderate in my book. YMMV.

Noooooo!!! Don’t encourage me! I am old enough to know that there are two parts to every hobby. There is doing the hobby part and there is shopping for tools and supplies for the hobby part. All of the room we are hoping to clear out by selling stuff at the convention does NOT need to be instantly refilled with tatting stuff. It sure is pretty though.

I’m actually jealous of the tools young people have, though. Youtube is wonderful, and being able to use my tablet to take a pic of something and then enlarge it so I can see if I’ve missed a stitch is amazing. I have a large selection of magnifying devices sitting unused while my tablet is sitting on my table.

Good for you  Tatting only takes crochet cotton and two shuttles to start with. They can be bought really cheap. You can write it off as destashing. I get you though, there’s a tremendous risk of a new addiction and collection. I’m glad that I can buy crafting books on Kindle nowadays, or we’d need a library.

To start with, huh? Hmmmmm!

Oh, something I learned recently which might be useful for other people who play with string. Those little bits and pieces of thread/yarn that gets cut off and thrown away are called Oorts. I have always been in the habit of making a little pile of oorts on my work surface and then throwing them away when I got up for whatever reason. Being light little bits of floss, they would sometimes end up floating away and I was always finding them on the floor.

I was working at the dining room table and had left a clean jar on the table for some unknown reason. Knowing that the jar was going to be moved when I got up, I started dropping my oorts in the jar and by the end of my stitching session, the habit was established so I kept putting my oorts in the jar. I have not found a piece of thread on the floor since then.

Around here, Dollar General seemed to have paper products when grocery stores were out…

Thought I posted this - I guess it was just on FB:

I’m working on a 2-tone purple knitting one now. Not sure when it will be done. PS if you do FB and want to friend me, send me a message and I’ll hook you up. Offer valid for all Mumpers and most Dopers.

Scrabble word!!! When I have larger scraps of yarn leftover, I tie them together and make a great big ball. When I have enough balls o’scrap, I make lap robes. Very little yarn gets thrown away.

Oh, yeah, back from helping our daughter. We hauled all of Roxy’s toys out of her room, as well as some boxes of clothing and baby stuff. FCD dealt with the diapers - removing the liners, then setting the snaps to the proper size for a little’un. I sorted clothing, keeping things that Toby will use, tossing the really girly stuff into a donation bag. And I did a lot of the running back and forth toting stuff, while my daughter sorted according to her organizational plan. In my car, I have the diapers and liners (she’ll be borrowing newborn diapers from a friend, so these won’t be needed for a few months) as well as the clothes to be donated. I also have a couple other bins to store till then need the contents.

We’re going back next Sunday to re-do the closet. We’ll put up more shelving in there and move the dresser in also (the closet is 7’ wide with double folding doors.) If all goes according to what we expect, she’ll have three 7’ shelves in place of the one that’s there now, plus several 2’ shelves along the sides of the dresser. Luckily, we have LOTS of shelving and brackets here that used to be in the basement. I’ll be inventorying it this week.

Leftover soup will be supper. And the rest of the day is dedicated to chillage.

Hell’s bells. Restaurant closed early again today - the closing manager called out sick. (She’s running a fever, which is obvs concerning.) I stayed for almost an hour to help finish closing, so realistically, I only lost about an hour of my shift.

Still … !

The day wasn’t a total waste of mascara, though. A customer gave me a necklace!

She complimented the one I was wearing, I told her I’d made it, and we chatted about beadwork and jewelry-making for a few seconds while the kitchen finished her order. Suddenly she handed me a lovely multicolored necklace, and said I could keep it!

It’s made of Fordite, which is extra fun for me since I’m still new to Michigan, and Fordite is a relic of the old-timey car manufacturing process.

Well, I have a bit of unexpected extra time this afternoon. Might as well start some laundry. I need to drag the biiiiiiiiiiiiig trash bin to the curb before dark, so may as well scoop the litter box out, first.

Or I could sit on my ass for a while.

(Smart money is on the latter.)

The rain eased up a couple of hours ago, and the sun is attempting to make an appearance. Nice sittin’ around weather!

I’ve heard of people stuffing clear glass balls with them to use as ornaments.

As far as pet gas, dogs are definitely worse than cats. We had one dog who was so bad my father started making noises about corks. Can’t remember if it was my mother or grandfather who pointed out the projectile problems with that idea.

Believe it or not, birds can be pretty bad with exhaust, too. Ava (RB) loved cat food, her digestive system did not. The PCFBBs (Post Cat Food Birdie Bombs) probably violated a few chemical warfare treaties.

Definitely sloth day over here. Laundry, etc., are current enough and we’re both tired.

Since “tats” also refers to tattoos, y’all had me confused!

Had to look it up. Pretty stuff!

Aw, hell’s bells v 2.0 - I was thawing some black beans & they leaked. Thankfully it was in one of the side cubbies attached to the door, so the mess is mostly contained, but still: a mess.

In better K.P. news, I realized I’m home early enough to make a proper baked potato for dinner. I have shredded mozzarella and fresh green onions. Dinner is sorted, as you Brits say.

Load of socks and work clothes are in the wash. Just need to quit putting off the litter box, so I can take the trash bin out.

… oh look! A cross-stitch project!

Yes, and, once you get the hang of it, pretty easy working as well. Like in crochet, counting is key, especially since un-tatting is really tedious. It’s a form of knotwork, like macramé. But on a really small scale. And much simpler, because it only involves two knots, basically. And it’s really sturdy. So far I’ve made some bracelets out of it, and trying out some 3d stuff. It’s fun!

Sounds yummy! Enjoy.

The main reason I never wanted to try it - I get the feeling it takes for-freekin’-ever to get a decent size piece done. That’s why I don’t crochet with tiny hooks and cotton. Give me worsted and a J-hook and I’ll churn stuff out all day! Yeah, I’ve used G hooks for certain things, but for afghans, big hooks rule!

BTW, welcome to our playground. I think you’ve earned the nickname Tatsy! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Why, thank you! I’ll wear it with pride😊

I took a pic of all my various half-done projects. Lemme know if this works?

shoe - “Access Denied”

Me too

I used to do the same. However I’ve not yet had the patience to make an entire afghan. I’m working on a cardigan with an I size though. I remember looking at lace knits swearing I wouldn’t. Ever. And then I did. And it went downhill from there :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:.
Since then I’ve learned to spin on a wheel and a variety of spindles. Since I now had a lot of yarn, I decided to try weaving. I probably will again soon.
Then looked at thread stuff, like crochet doilies and tatting, and swore I’d never, and here we are. My current limit is lace making. So my dad bought me a book about it for my birthday🤣. Who knows…
