Things that go bump in the MMP

Well, it finally happened: I completely forgot about the “Monday morning” part of MMP. :woman_facepalming:

As I just posted in the old thread, the last time I locked myself out of the house I bought a lockbox and put it on the back door (with a spare key in it). The combo is my “nephew’s” birthday, which no one would think of or know other than me or his parents. I haven’t needed it since I bought it — 5-6 years ago — but I really like knowing it’s there just in case. I plan to use it wherever I live from now on.

I’m kind of tired and a little out of sorts this evening. No particular reason for either condition. Meh.

Hi everyone. I was up at 3:00 am and on the r ok ad by 4:00 am. It was raining pretty hard when I left but slowed down enough that the drive wasn’t made extra treacherous. The drive over the pass was epic, even if it practically pitch black. Not a single car was ahead of me or behind me. I saw a deer crossing the highway, and something else too. Not sure what it was but it was somewhat large and had glowing eyes.

Most epic of all, however, was the huge tree high on hill that was on fire. That tree and the immediate area around it was deep, deep red and all around was pitch black. It was absolutely surreal looking. I wanted to stop and take a picture, but there really wasn’t anywhere to park on the side of the road at that spot. And, although I never saw headlights behind me, I couldn’t be sure there wasn’t a car behind me.

There was a firefighting operation right around the bend from where I momentarily stopped, so no worries about reporting it. This is from the big fire that started this summer and is only about 43 percent contained.

I am in my hotel room eating my dinner. It windy and rainy outside so I don’t really want to go anywhere. I might get sweet treat from the little store in the lobby later.

No call back from the dermatologist. I guess itchy patients are pretty boring.

I did, however, find a nice candle and a thank you card on my doorstep from the neighbors across the hall. Wasn’t that sweet of them?

It sounds eerily beautiful.

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave.

Up from a really good sleep, and without Mel’s help! Huzzah!

Last night, I made appointments for FCD and me to get our flu shots - 9 this morning at CVS. I’m also getting the shingles shot because my doc told me the one I got before apparently isn’t all that effective. So it’s a twofer. But it’ll be another 4 weeks before I can get my booster, and not sure for FCD since he got the J&J.

After getting shot, I need to run into Food Lion for some milk, then on the way home, we’ll stop at Zimmerman’s to see what veggies are available. Such an exciting, fun-filled morning ahead!

My grow light was delivered yesterday. I may go ahead and assemble it, then figure out how I’m going to hang it in the greenhouse. In fact, I need to clean out the greenhouse - it’s been accumulating miscellaneous stuff thru the summer, but now I need space for my veggie experiment. I guess that’ll be my afternoon.

Onward! Happy Tuesday!!

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 62 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 89 and mostly N.O.S. for the day. Today is laundry day. Yeehaw! It’s also a don’t have to be anywhere day so we shall hole up in da cave all day. Sup shall be poke roast, baby lima beans, roasted carrots, leftover company smashed N.O.T. from Sunday, and rolls. I took a turkey boob outta da freezer yestiddy to begin thawin. It shall be roasted probably on Sattidy, as Sunday is Vestry meetin’ right after deheathenization, so won’t have time to deal with all that then.

I have a routine doc appt. scheduled in October. I’ll get a flu shot then and see what she says about the covid booster. I might be offered it then or need to make an appt. at the main office. We shall see.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah,

Happy Tuesday Y’all!

Last night fit in with the theme of this MMP. We were watching TV, when all of a sudden, there was a loud thump. It sounded to me like maybe a tree fell outside or that something big fell in the basement. FCD thought the sound came from the back yard. He was almost right.

When I turned on the light in the dining room, I saw this
Imgur
lying on the floor. The snake plant has gotten out of control, as you can see, and I think gravity finally pulled the whole thing over. The urn is a masterpiece in clay that we bought in Spain 37 years ago - yeah, it’s ugly, but it’s sentimental!

Anyway, I set it back as you see it now, leaning against the wall, till I can break it down into at least 2 planters. I had to get the vacuum out, but within a few minutes, we were back to our usual lazy evening. But for a brief moment, we were both somewhat freaked out!

Ah, it was just a couple of hours, yesterday. Since we now have two confirmed positive cases on staff (therefore, quarantine etc.) there are tons of available shifts.

… and yes, I have a multivitamin, plus a few other supplements. The kick is, they’re tough on an empty stomach. So I gotta eat, at least something solid, in order to take the vitamins.

I’ve been shot… in both arms. Shingles in left and flu in right. Then I came home and futzed in my greenhouse, which is apparently a haven for skeeters - both arms got bit up, dammit. Gotta remember insect repellent next time.

But I’ve started some 'maters, cukes, and peppers - we shall see how well they do over the cold months. I may add some herbs, too. Shortly, I will set up the grow light. Gotta figure out where I’ll mount it, as well as the timer. They need 6-8 hours a day of “sun” and they’ll get a fair bit in the morning once all the leaves fall. I need to provide light when the house starts to shade the greenhouse - so maybe from 2-6 in the afternoon. Greater concern is for heat once it starts getting colder at night. Must figure something out with insulation and a heater.

FCD just went to nap. It’s almost time for me to start thinking about lunch, especially since it’s almost 5 hours since I had breakfast. Pot roast for supper, heavy on the veggies - I need to get that started around 1 because the meat has to be fall-apart tender to be a proper pot roast.

So quit distracting me, dammit! :stuck_out_tongue:

Try taking your multi-vitamin at night, right before you go to bed. I used to take mine in the morning and got an upset stomach every time, even with a little food. I then read a tip to take it at night and it hasn’t upset my stomach since - or maybe I just don’t notice a little upset since I’m asleep.

I know I haven’t been around much and someone in the last(?) MMP asked for an update. I’ve been crazy busy at work and promise I’ll get to it as soon as I can. I’ve had a lot of adventures!

Morning all. Soccer got practiced, Freddy’s provided steakburgers, and Dallas won (well, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad). Slept until 7:30am this morning and have yet to do anything more constructive than take my pills and fix some instant breakfast. Heading to 84F today, so the Air Conditioning might be coming back on, but right now the house is still comfortable.

FCM, sometimes when I’m in bed the icemaker in the refrigerator decides to dump a load of cubes in the bin, and I’ve been known to get up and check around the house. Glad the urn survived.

swampy, just looked at my card and my second vaccination was 9 April, so I’ll be eligible in early October, so like you I’ll combine my booster and flu shots if I can.

nellie, sounds like you have pretty nice neighbors there.

Taters, diving early in the mountains is beautiful, but glad you were careful. And…

Bigfoot?

shoe, hope both work and appetite are in your near future.

BBBoo, that is a good thing you’re doing with the platelet donation…if I didn’t hate needles so much, I’d look into it.

OK, I really do need to get motivated and do some stuff about the house. Take care all.

And this made me realize that I can’t math. I got my second shot on Feb 20 so I can get the booster any time. Except having just gotten these two, I guess I need to wait a bit. Must investigate…

done heaving, and I got a load of whites in the dryer. Naptime.

We like adventure.

{ pops popcorn }

{ sits up eagerly awaiting fun stories }

I usually do anyway, since “last thing before I go to bed” is usually my biggest meal of the day.

HA! You reminded me. Years ago, someone was regaling me with unsolicited health advice. I mentioned that my biggest meal is usually right before bedtime, since that helps me sleep better.

Unsolicited Advice-Giver admonished me that this is the worst thing EVAH, because weight gain!!1!!omg!!1!

I looked at her, looked down at my scrawny frame, looked back at her, and then - still no words - just The Look.

Autumn arrived, and as usual it was like someone flipped a switch. The weather has definitely been wetter the past week.

When I bought our house there was an ‘awning’ over the front door comprising a wooden frame and some clear corrugated plastic sheets. Of course you’d take a shower getting to the front door. There was also a chimney for the dis-used fireplace in the front bedroom. It was brick, covered with river rocks. The mortar was starting to deteriorate, and rocks would occasionally fall off and roll onto the plastic roof with a bank. The old chimney was leaking into the frame, and we finally had it demolished and new wall framing constructed. At the same time, the handyman built a new awning with plywood sheeting and shingles.

Unfortunately, he tried to make it level and it was ever so slightly tilted toward the house causing water to go to the house instead of the yard. I made a couple attempts over the years to jack up the low end and re-secure it. I think what I did was cause a leak between the roof and the awning roof, which made matters worse. Flex-Seal, pieces of flashing, etc. didn’t work.

So Mrs. L.A. got the handyman back to A) repair the house wall that was rotting; and B) fix the awning. Good news! The leak between the house and the awning was fixed! Bad news: He still sloped the new awning the wrong way. (He’s actually does good work, but he or his crew just screwed up.) We’ve been trying for months to get him to come out and fix it, to no avail. So last week I removed the Torx screws from one of the supports. (With a set of Torx wrenches that fold up like a pocket knife, as I didn’t have any bits.) The roof didn’t seem to sag at all. I put some pressure on it. The support looks like it may have come down half an inch. Maybe an inch. I thought I would have to remove the board that attaches to the house roof, being careful not to upset the shingles above. And then the rains came.

The past couple of days, the rainwater had been flowing in the right direction. Yay! I’ll probably screw the support to the door frame Saturday. Maybe I’ll put a couple of bricks on the awning while I’m doing it to make sure it slopes enough.

In other news, five years ago we attended the wedding of one of Mrs. L.A.'s former cow-orkers. A couple of weeks ago we found out the husband of the former cow-orker was on a ventilator with Covid. Yesterday he became a statistic. Mrs. L.A. doesn’t know their vaccination statuses, but she said they’re the kind of people who wouldn’t get vaccinated.

Happy Toosday!

Slept in until almost 6 this morning. My son called right before 6 that he was off irk.
I had to rush to get ready to go get him.
I saw lightning on the way to get him, and the rain started on the way home.
I thought about skipping the park, but I hate being a wussie and so we went.
It was only us and Lucy, which I figured nobody else would show up.
It wasn’t so bad, there was one huge downpour while we were there, just a light rain coming and going.

After I got rejected to give blood for the third time, I was told to never come back.

I have a ton of stuff to do today. Laundry is still calling my name. I need to order groceries for tomorrow. I’d rather go today, I’m so confused… today is Toosday and my son has to irk tonight. That is why we are not getting groceries today.
My Jungle order says it was delivered last night, and it wasn’t. I need to deal with da Jungle, but what I read online said to give it 48 hours, so I will.
Still waiting on refund from at&t, and the old mortgage company, and waiting for the hood to come in. Also, OAOASO owes me for the phone bill. He said I’d have the money last Saturday, still waiting on that.

Fell asleep posting this. I do not know what is wrong with me, I’m so damn tired all the time.

That must be very distressing. Stress makes me tired, but its possible you have the flu or something. When Hubs had COVID, his first symptom was fatigue.

I’m team SpikeVax and boosters aren’t recommended for us yet. I’m starting to feel left out, so after I get my imaging done, I’m going to stop at CVS and get my flu shot.

We got more rain last night and the temp has dropped to under 90F. I think fall really is here. I put some suet in the fridge to chill (less messy to work with that way) and I’ll put it out when I get back.

I wonder if the strong magnets I’ll be exposed to will get my vax to start working right. I’m still dropping needles and they are a pain to pick up off of smooth surfaces like laminate floors. I wanna be magnetic, damnit!

I’m happy to report that this will be a happy report. I had my regular appointment with the corneal specialist, and he was astonished at how much my vision has improved. He said he had to double-check to make sure it was the right Nellie. He also said my peripheral vision will never be normal because of the grafts and other surgeries, and the improvement on the last visual field test was slight, BUT I’m doing so well, I don’t have to return for a whole YEAR! It’s been over 30 years since I’ve heard that. There was rejoicing in Mudville.

ALSO…I’m not as itchy today! Hopefully this flare has run its course. The dermatologist referred me to a different allergy clinic, so hopefully I’ll get in there sooner than January. I’d really, really like to prevent these flares.

The apt. complex manager texted me to rave about the cookies and ask for the recipe, so apparently, they were a hit.

See? All good news. :sun_with_face: :slightly_smiling_face:

FCM, I think the snake plant was trying to make a getaway. But that reminds me of a bump in the night story. Some years back, I was getting ready for bed when I heard a loud crash in the kitchen. This was before the break-in but during the time my ex was stalking me, and I was really afraid it was him. I called a friend and had her stay on the line with me while I investigated. (She helpfully reminded me that that’s how people get axed in horror movies.) Turned out the Command hook I had the broom on in the kitchen fell off, and the broom knocked other stuff while falling. Whew.

Sari, nobody wants my blood, either. :frowning: My daughter gave blood regularly in high school. I read once that almost 20% of the blood supply comes from HS kids. Something to remember when people rail about kids these days.

Maybe these will help.

Ms. Owl, 'twas I who inquired. Glad you’re doing OK. Looking forward to the update.

This is wise! Our school district is being sued by the teacher’s union, among other things, so a few of the schools are suddenly much more stringent. I wish they would offer online school until at least Christmas, for unvaccinated kids. As an option, at least. We’re getting soooo close to getting most the kiddos vaccinated. Pushing things and getting kids sick makes no sense to me.

Please remind me - are you on a reduced eating schedule? I remember you weren’t feeling well. I know I have a really hard time finding things that I am willing to eat. I’m nauseous almost all the time. I finally settled on Ensure shakes and bland white rolls as my go to’s when I must eat a thing, but no thing sounds good. Maybe some crackers or something would work for you?

Sad news. :frowning:

Nellie Yay! for eyes and Yay! for not itching. :tada:

Re: boosters, I fall into the at risk category and can go anytime. I’ll get around to it soonish.

I had my infusion yesterday. They gave it to me with steroids, to prevent an allergic reaction. Last night I felt like I could reorganize the kitchen, and today I feel horrid. It should wear off soon.

Take care everyone.

Were you bitten by a tsetse fly? (I wish I could find the song.)
