things you eat for health reasons that you hate

I started making myself eat turnip greens because they’re good for you and because we serve them twice a week at work. I had to put lots of pepper sauce on them to choke them down at first, but now I crave them.

If salads were the only form of vegetables I ate, I’d agree with you 100%. But how about ratatouille? Spanakopita? Pasta Primavera? Veggie chili? Or just a simple dish of oven-roasted vegetables? Satisfying and delicious.

Why? I know hydrogenating vegetable fats creates harmful trans fats, but what evils does partial hydrolysis of starch bring? I use maltodextrin as a source of quick carbs in my post-workout recovery drinks, and need to know, please.

I assumed it was a warning that it might provide a quick source of carbs, something a diabetic should be cautious of.

Although, if the stuff gives her gas, she probably doesn’t break it down into sugar very efficiently. Bad gas from food is usually a sign of undigested carbohydrates that your gut bacteria are eating.

Hmm, I guess i just don’t like veggies very much:
ratatouille? Ick
Spanakopita? Okay, but more a greasy snack than a meal
Pasta Primavera? Where the meat?
Veggie chili? Where’s the meat?

Or just a simple dish of oven-roasted vegetables? Yeah, i like oven roasted veggies.

Maybe it’s that I despise bell peppers, and dishes like veggie chili tend to be heavy on pepper. There are other bean dishes that I enjoy. Of course, they tend to be heavy on beans and light on veggies.

Mostly, when I enjoy vegetables, they are raw, steamed, or in soup.

Because of my hypoglycemia, my A1C is usually below 6. It was 5.4 last check. There is 0 sugar in my urine, so I’m good for the time being, but the diabetes onset in my family is usually 55-65. My father developed pancreatic cancer at age 67. Apparently adult onset insulin dependent diabetes is an autoimmune disorder.

I do great with starches like bread and potatoes, and in fact, if I don’t get enough, I have other problems due to having very mild IBS. I almost hate to mention having IBS. I have only two serology markers for it, and it’s pretty easy to control through diet, but if I have a couple of days in a row where I don’t have a lot of control over where and when I eat-- I have to stop at restaurants several times, or something-- then I have to break out the Imodium. Anyway, getting bread at least once a day, and twice is better, really helps control the IBS, so I can’t say enough good things about gluten.

A good breakfast for me is bread with cheese, either a banana, or a small amount of some kind of sweeter fruit, like a clementine (I can’t handle a whole orange), and coffee with one tablespoon of 1/2 & 1/2, and some Splenda.

I don’t like vegetables. Hated them as a kid, but Dad forced them into me every night. Now I eat salads a couple times a week even though they don’t thrill me.

When I first started cooking for myself I worked broccoli in on a regular basis even though I loathed it because I felt if I had to choke something down, that was the best bang for the buck. Now I kinda like the stuff, and everyone I feed broccoli to says I do a pretty good job cooking it.

You could just take fish oil.

Count me in as someone who doesn’t understand “choking” something down just because it’s “healthy.” I understand missing something that you are no longer allowed to eat, but it seems silly to force yourself to eat something you don’t like when there are so many options that would serve the same purpose. Can you name something that you actually have to eat for which there is no other option? I’m really curious.

I used to eat a breakfast burrito every morning. I’ve since switched over to instant oatmeal. It’s OK. But I much prefer the burrito

I’ve cut back on my lunches as well, but eat whatever I want for dinner. I’ve lost 10lbs over the summer. Ten more to go…

I don’t actually hate the taste of Sugar Free Red Bull, it’s just not as good a Mountain Dew was (or is, on the rare occasions I drink it, like, maybe once a year when I’m exercising.) While I still have the same amount, or even more, caffeine as I had before the switch, I have a lot less sugar. Diet Mountain Dew didn’t cut it cause it tasted like a parallel-universe travesty of lemonade. For awhile I tried to make an Arnold Palmer out of Diet Mountain Dew, and despite my novice arnold-palmer-making skills, it actually tasted better than straight up Diet Dew, but it was too much work for not enough taste.

None. But yes, there are some things i am not a huge fan of I eat for health reasons- but I eat nothing I hate.

I mean, I prefer iceberg to broccoli, but I dont hate broccoli, and if it is cooked right (lightly steamed) it’s not bad at all.

I prefer sourdough or white to whole wheat, but some whole wheat isnt bad at all.

Etc.

This. There are a lot of people who think that maltodextrin is some sort of artificial sweetener, or that it “doesn’t count” for carbs, and stuff like that. While I know that RivkahChava is a very smart person, “maltodextrin is still carbs” is something that I’ve met enough diabetics that didn’t know it, I prefer to mention it. Not just for her, but also for other people reading.
