This is not even friggin funny !

Damn, i just joined yesterday, and i’m gettin emails too. :frowning:

Forward them to TubaDiva. She’s looking into this.

SHe listed me FIRST!!! Darlin if you were not married I would run up to the land of “to damn cold for Osip” and sweep you off your feet.

I have found this mildly disturbing. Yet I am glad it was “these people are depressed write them and chher them up.” Instdead of… well nevermind why give anyone any ideas.

Missy2u: If I were to be a betting man I would point a ugly little finger at Osip or the doplaganger troll who played Osip a while ago. I of course do not bet mainly because I am almost always wrong.

Osip

Apparently I too am depressed. Geeze, what a way to be welcomed back to my email after a few days leave. This truly blows.

Well, it’s good to know that none of the Sarahs I know were involved in this at least-I wouldn’t want to have to go get mad at them.

I didn’t get any of the emails, but I just thought I’d point the following out, I don’t know how helpful it will really be in sorting this whole thing out, if at all.

I believe the max number of people in an AOL chat room is 23. It appears to me your “friend” may have gone into a Christian (or some sort) chat room and told the 22 others to email you all because you were depressed (hence the number of emails), and to pray for you. Don’t know if that helps any in figuring this out, though.

I have no idea what the connection among the group of people receiving the emails is, though.

I’m getting these annoying “cheer up” e-mails as well, and I’m not even a regular poster on the board! In fact, I’ve only made six posts since I registered a month ago! I guess I somehow managed to piss someone off in one of my posts! To whoever’s behind all this: This is NOT funny, and you have been reported to AOL. I hope AOL cancels your account. Idiots like you don’t deserve Internet access.

I got, I think, 23 messages total. A number of them indicated either that their friend Sarah (one said that it was her cousin Sarah) or someone they didn’t know IMed them to send a message to “cheer us up”. I eventually emailed maybe 5 or 6 of them indicating that they’d been manipulated into spamming a group of strangers (once it got into double digits, I was pretty sure it was not a single person creating new screen names), a couple emailed me back that they’d reported her to AOL. One remembered part of the girl’s AOL screen name (I forwarded a copy of her response to me attached to her original message to Tuba, along with a handful of others–it felt too much like spamming Tuba to send them all–and told her to let me know if she wanted any more).

Well, I’m honored that you consider yourself honored to be in a group with me. Thanks. Sorry it couldn’t have been under better circumstances.

I’m beginning to think that whoever did this picked E-mail addresses at random… if it were the most recent trolls and half-trolls, why Jetty? Why such a motley bunch?

Also, some of the most-notable in some of the more recent trollish cases have been exempt from this new trollspam. Hmm… ::puffs his pipe::… what do you think, Watson?

Well, for one thing, Spoofe, those of us who don’t list our e-mail addresses in our profiles haven’t had any problems so far.

My WAG is that the perpetrator is somebody whose funny bone was tickled by the “Want Prayer?” thread. “Okay, Dopers, here’s some REAL prayer!”

I’ve heard some people express doubts as to whether the people who are sending them these prayer e-mails are real. I think they are, and are very sincere in their desire that you be comforted. Sending someone you don’t know a prayer e-mail is no trouble at all, takes about 2 seconds, not like where someone goes to your church and you know them and they have actual problems that you have to deal with, plus sometimes they have bad breath. If you do get prayer e-mails from these people, be kind, and don’t flame them. They’re just trying to be helpful.

Make up a form letter to respond and just copy-and-paste like Ayesha said.

I don’t need prayer and I don’t even remember a “Want Prayer?” thread. Who started it? Maybe that person is our “Sarah”.

Jetty,

I don’t think so, only 2 or 3 of the emails I got mentioned God in anyway. Manny of them were just silly, well, ok, stupid. Y R U sad, and don’t worry be happy don’t strike me as prayerful, for some odd reason.

And I really doubt it was the person who started that thread. He or she as the case may be doesn’t seem that type of person.

This was a plain old fashion email letter barrage. I wouldn’t doubt if if the person who did it included his/her own email address to keep suspision off of him/her. Just my 2 cents.

I think it’s over, and hopefully the idiot, scumsucking, two-toed moron behind it will be traced down and his/her ISP will shut him/her down.

I’m curious why I slipped under the radar. I keep opening my email, but nothing’s there. I kind of feel left out.

Well, Wally, I still have all the ones I got, Want me to send them to you ?

Or better yet, I could ask these nice folks to write you myself. But only because you are so sad and depressed that you didn’y get any.

Well. I’ve done some soul searching, Ayesha, and perhaps things are better this way.

Yep. I mean, why disturb the situation?

Let’s just leave everything the way it is, okeley dokeley?

I didn’t get any e-mails to cheer me up either.

Why do I get the feeling this was started by someone who is LeftBehind?

The above recipients all have their e-mail addresses prominently linked from every post they make. One should not be so surprised that some weirdo might not use such freely available info for his own ends (like a chain letter designed to flood a mailbox - what a dick!)
I put my e-mail address out of sight of the lamers and harvest-bots; it is only accessible through my web page which nobody ever visits. So I am safe from all the routine, SDMB-sourced spam.

Well now ** RTA** , you just told them how to find it didn’t you ?

I keep my email up in case a fellow doper wants to talk to me off the board, one on one. Hey it could happen.

** DrMatrix,**

I really, really doubt that. As I said before only two or three even mentioned God or prayer. I hate it when people blame stuff on Christians because two or three of the emails mentioned God or Jesus Christ. Yes I am one of those, not a goood one, I admit. But I am one none the less. If whoever did this was a Christian, it would not have happened. Period the end. As worldly as I am, even I know that Christ would not approve of harrassing people.

** Wally ** , honey, you sure you don’t need cheering up ? I want you to be happy. :stuck_out_tongue:

So, did everybody else get an additional one today?

And did you notice the subject line was dissimilar from the other mass mailing, but exactly the same as the subject line we used on some of our emails back and forth about this spamming?

An inside job, perhaps?

(Eyeing the others suspiciously …)

Professor Plum did it in the Conservatory with a Lead Pipe!

Sounds kinky to me.
