This shit must stop

I mean, usually I talk it out or post it on message boards.

I can get through a few days of the Aztec Two-Step. Flatulence is normally not a problem. But the two together make life… not so fun. Funny, how it came on a few days after my biometric screening. Maybe the quack’s lubricant was contaminated? Or: On telecommuting days, I tend to have a high-fibre breakfast. And there’s that leftover corned beef and cabbage. Mmmm… Cabbage! But still… Four days of this shit?

Did I have too much ‘roughage’? Not enough? Should I take acidophilus to eat up what I suspect is an intestinal bug? Or do I have too much intestinal flora already? I suppose I could call the quack and ask for some antibiotics. I don’t want to take the usual OTC remedies. I’m of the ‘better out than in’ school of thought – especially after an episode a decade and a half ago that could have killed me.

Take an anti-diarrheal.

Try some grilled cheese?

I won’t. After the incident so long ago, I don’t want to risk blockage. And it’s not that it’s so much – basically juicy farts – it’s that it’s so frequent.

Coincidentally, I had two grilled cheese sandwiches last night.

At least you’re not in Skald’s shoes.

Or hovering over them

IANAD, but I went through the same thing a few months back. My pharmacist told me to have nothing but water for 24 hours, then take 10 Acidophilus capsules and 2 Imodium.

He said that when you’re passing just liquid you can flush out a lot of the ‘good’ bacteria in your gut.

The Imodium acts as a goalkeeper while the Acidophilus chaps (who breed faster than rabbits) do their stuff.

[I’m not qualified to give any kind of medical advice, but it worked for me]

Probiotics.

I’m going to follow a medical suggestion from someone named DrDeth? :dubious: :stuck_out_tongue:

Cork.

There’s an old joke involving an elephant and a monkey from when I was a kid. I don’t remember it, but the punchline was ‘The last thing I saw was the monkey holding the cork and doing this! [Pantomime the monkey covering its eyes and trying to blindly put the cork in the elephant’s butt]’

As long as you’re not on any other meds, two tablets of activated charcoal. The travellers friend! It will address both issues, very quickly too, no meds required!
(Be aware. It has a very predictable side effect!)

I agree on the immodium and probiotics. I loooooove my probiotic, but I just take 1 per day, have never tried 10  so can’t speak to that.
Too bad about the grilled cheese. the only time a GC ever did that to me was at Steak n Shake, so I knew I was playing with fire. :smack:

I’ve been taking the occasional acidophilus tablet for the past couple of weeks. The SO bought them and I figured, why not?

The grilled cheese had no effect either way. Not that I was trying for one. We just wanted grilled cheese sandwiches. Actually, I’m eying a big hunka cheddar in the fridge…

anti- anti-diarrhea medicine shouldn’t stop you up. One dose should end the event. After that you should be consuming good bacteria (Lactobacillus and bifidobacteria 10 strains each 50 billion cultures per capsule) and 35 grams of fiber per day.

Wouldn’t surprise me if the scope was contaminated given the recent endoscope crisis.

If you’ve got a lot of heartburn then that stomach acid kills of good bacteria. A week or two of Omeprazole should stop that.

Cheese is NOT your digestive friend.

I really, really don’t want to take anti-D medication. Call it a phobia. I don’t want to go through that again.

I mentioned the acidophilus, and the SO said, ‘Yes! And there are those probiotic gummis, too.’ I’d forgotten about those.

No scope. Finger. The scope isn’t for another five weeks.

Thanks for reminding me about the omeprazole. I forgot to take one today.

Seemed to be better yesterday. Less gas making for explosive defecation. This thing hasn’t been liquid. More like toothpaste or mashed potatoes. (I know that’s going to put some people off! ) I had carne asada, pollo asado, sautéed jumbo prawns, refried beans, and rice last night. So far just gas and a few flippy bits that look like colon lining. :stuck_out_tongue:

I understand your phobia but did you have a bad experience? You can be seriously stopped up and get diarrhea at the same time. while they can be related they also can be independent. Fixing one didn’t cause the other.

Imodium AD is IMHO a fantastic drug. I’ve rarely needed 2 doses and I rarely take the recommended 2 pills to start with. IANAD but AFAIK it’s not designed to “congeal” your waste. It stops the triggers that cause the liquid hell.

As of late I have to avoid constipation. If I get backed up it causes a reaction that can only be described as scary. Don’t know if it pinches a nerve or what but I get a response that causes intestinal pain, rapid hear rate and profuse sweating. So I’m heavily invested in keeping things moving. Also found that large amounts of Niacin seem to add to this.

So eat a sensible diet and supplement it with the right amount of fiber and healthy bacteria. And the Omeprazole is more of a long term treatment and not a one day thing. Don’t take it when you have heartburn, take it for successive days until it’s completely gone and stays gone.

Yes, around 2000 or so. Severe pain, bloating, sweating… I was in such pain that I could not find a comfortable position to lie down. Or sit up. It was debilitating. By the time I went to a clinic in the middle of the night, I was sure I’d need surgery. I was so bloated, the doctor asked ‘You weigh 300 and…?’ That bloated. I was prescribed some stuff ironically named ‘Go Lightly’, which tasted worse than (guessing) drinking somebody else’s vomit. And I had to drink like a quart of it at a time, which was nearly impossible since I couldn’t stand to put anything in my stomach. I was afraid I was going to die, and I was afraid I wouldn’t die. I never want to go through that again.

I usually remember to take an omeperazol every morning. Usually.

Ok. I have ABS that manifests in some of the ways you’re describing.

  1. Knock off the foods that cause the issues. No more beans, for example, until things settle down. Bland, bland, bland until everything is fine, then slowly start re-introducing the fun stuff.

  2. eat bean-o with the beans. Really, it helps.

  3. gas-ex helps with gas.

  4. pro-biotics, every day. I take Align. YMMV. I have gotten from a white bread and water diet (yes, really) to being able to eat almost anything in moderation. I still have to be careful with spicy foods and beans. I eat them, but in small amount, knowing that I might have to pay a price.

TL;DR - bland foods only until your GI behaves. NO beans or spicy foods, until then. Take probiotics, yogurt is not enough. PM if I can help.
