This thread should not have been closed

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=127187

The only problem i have with this msg board is the mods closing threads that THEY find distasteful. BTW I didn’t start the thread.
IMO that thread is not “revolting.” I actually found it interesting and liked zen’s take on it. I also think the thread should have been moved to IMHO and not Mundane Pointless.
Please re-open this thread.

You’re going about this the wrong way. Whether you believe it was unfairly closed or not, you should either email an administrator or begin a new thread in the proper forum. Asking them to reopen it probably won’t get you anywhere. Posting this thread here will only earn you the ire of the higher-ups. And if you were truly complaining about the thread being closed, the Pit is the place to be.

dan,
I took a look at the BBQ Pit description and you’re right. I think it’s a sad commentary on the admin of this board that any criticism belongs in a flame pit.

No, not any criticism, just full-blown complaints. The way your OP is phrased, it looks like you’re complaining about it being closed, that is, that you’re disputing the actions of a moderator. Now, if you had said,

"I'm not sure why exactly this thread was closed. Could someone please clarify? And would it be all right if I opened a new thread on the same topic in MPSIMS?"

then ATMB would be a good place for it. But the way you put it, it’s almost a flame. Sorry, that’s just how it looks, although it may not be how you feel.

It’s not that, KidCharlemagne. It’s just that time has borne out the fact that any questions like this one, if allowed to continue, develop into a thread that belongs there anyway. I imagine that people on both sides of the issue are to blame for this, but the bottom line is that it saves time and boards resources just to start such threads there.

The OP has been registered for 18 months; s/he should know better than to open that sort of thread in GQ.

I think it’s a sad commentary on you that you think it’s “interesting” to fool strangers into thinking they’ve come across an unexpected stoke of good fortune, and then have it snatched away.

Just because there’s a lot of flaming in the Pit doesn’t mean you can’t post polite criticisms there and have them treated as such. I did just that with my first Pit thread a couple of days ago.

Whoa whoa whoa Ike. I never said i thought it was interesting to do that. I thought the thread was interesting and obviously others did as well. Did something like this happen to you or something?
Achernar - It appears your right. Why do they always become flame threads? I thought my complaint was legitimate. I don’t remember starting out insulting Ike.

I don’t debate that it didn’t belong in GQ, only that it shouldnt have been closed.

There’s another aspect to consider, too. Although most people on here look at threads such as that in terms of entertainment, there are always going to be those people who will take it upon themselves to do the actions described in the thread. In short, the Board would prefer not to encourage people to commit illegal acts, and it will close threads that might do so, with the exception of threads that are actually providing useful information (as opposed to simple entertainment). This way, they’re covered in terms of liability, although I think the User Agreement does cover them there, anyway.

No. But I do have the capacity for empathy.

It may say something about my unfitness to be a Nietzschean Superman that I empathized with the restaurant busboy who had a sudden happy thought that he might go to college, or the old woman who briefly planned to pay her pharmacist bill, rather than the sniggering prankster.

Anyway, my moral caprices are beside the point. The thread was in the wrong forum. And, as dan said, we’d prefer not to encourage such hilarious shenanigans.

Come on Ike.
I have nothing against you. I tried to respond to the original thread to say how distasteful I thought the idea was myself. Your confusing the distastefulness of the action mentioned in the thread with the thread itself. I didn’t mean to flame you, though the comment you just responded too was a bit inflammatory and I apologize for that. Honestly I thought when you reviewed the closing of the thread you would probably agree it should have been moved but not closed, no harm no foul. Your clearly an intelligent guy and I’m sure that even though it is a private forum, closing that thread was a bit of a violation to the spirit of debate of these forums.

A disagreement with a moderator decision!!
I’m going to move this to The BBQ Pit.
As other people have pointed out in this thread, just because a thread is in The BBQ Pit doesn’t mean that it has to turn in to a flamefest.

Hmmm, I looked at it. I agree it should have been closed. The reason is because it
has information in it on how to make fake lottery tickets. Not at first, but it got to that point.

Making fake lottery tickets is, well, a no-no in my opinion. If you need to, call the lottery board
& ask them how many years in jail you get, if any.

Also, in the rules, they do specify that a moderator my interpret what you posted in their own
way.

Nope, it would still go in the Pit. Any questions about moderator decisions go in the Pit. ATMB is most for hardware/software questions, and hypothetical questions.

Okay, I have a question for the admins. Are threads about pranks still allowed to be started? Good-natured stuff, like what someone would do to a college roommate, not like salt-burning a swastika in someone’s lawn. I seem to remember threads about pranks being open and being closed, so I wanted to know the SD position before I start one.

Thanks!

I agree. They should close the threads I find distasteful. Really, this board would be so much better if it catered to my whims.

If that were the case, then all we’d ever talk about would be sex and fonts.

Where’s the fun in that?

Then again…

You’re banned from my board, Cnote.

That’s such a great prank. I’ve got an idea, how about you tell your girlfriend “Honey, I’ve got aids.”
