You know, this is just crap. People lying in the street, or screaming at one another aren’t going to change anyone’s mind on this matter. If anything they’re going to reinforce the current opinion that folks have on the matter. Why? Because instead of making the opposition look intelligent, they’re making it look like a bunch of screaming fools, and if the anti-war protestors continue to block traffic, they are going to get ran over by some crazed lunatic (damned near happened once already).
I think they changed the first image. I read the comments and kept seeing refrences to a banner that said “We support our troops when they shoot their officers” and telling the site people they needed to take it down.
And here’s the original image posted on another site.
These people may feel that there’s a comparison. King was protesting for civil rights. These people feel they are protesting for the lives of US soldiers and innocent Iraqi civilians. Times may be different, but I guess the tactics of civil disobedience remain the same.
Fucking stupid ignorant Socialists who actually seem to think that there can be a Revolution of the Proletariat here in the US. Not a fucking chance.
I’m all for peaceful protest, and marching. But the moment a peace protester physically touches me, I’m going to cripple him. If they box in my car, I will run them down.
I support the right to protest and speak out agaisnt anything you want, but the minute you put me in danger your forfeit your life. Period.
My father’s an officer. What a bunch of assholes. Fuck em.
You don’t understand civil disobedience, then. MLK and the Selma marchers defied the laws of segregation by gathering, praying, and marching, all completely nonviolent actions. They didn’t yell slogans, they didn’t break windows, they didn’t attack cops.
If those assholes were really serious about saving lives, they’d pull their “civil disobedience” horseshit in Iraq. They’d attempt to stop tanks and troops instead off police officers and soccer moms in SUVs.
But, they’re not serious. They are just a bunch of whiny little bitches with nothing better to do.
Get jobs, douchebags.
Fuck these motherfuckers too.
Amen Tristan
Ah yes this old nugget of shit. In regards to the soldiers, while any loss of life is horrific, keep in mind that we have an all volunteer army m’kay? Why don’t they protest the people who are prodding children in the back with machine guns to go fight the great satan? As far as Iraqi civilians go, Saddam will many many more then we ever will, so keep that in mind as well.
There are plenty of reasons to oppose this war, but these stupid protesters are using the wrong tactics and the wrong reasons to do so.
Saddam will kill many many more…
Besides, everyone else in the area was probably aware what MLK was doing and was prepared for it. A long-distance march is not a very good comparison for impromptu marches and sit-ins where the only ones who are prepared for the circumstances are the protesters themselves.
The tactics that were ok to use in semi-rural Alabama are not the same tactics that are ok to use in NYC. Like others have said, protest all you want, march on the weekends, make general asses out of yourselves by calling for the death of American servicemen, but once you start mucking with people’s ability to earn a living by getting to work, the police need to clean the streets with clubs, water cannons, rubber bullets and dogs as far as I’m concerned.
And dogs that shoot bees out of their mouths.
Just as I would not paint all military personnel with a brush dipped in the legacy of My Lai and Lt. William Calley, I ask that not all people involved in protests against Our Stupid War be evaluated as the equivalent of some asshole who throws acid in a police officer’s face.
He should have his teeth stomped in, whoever he is (I didn’t hear about it prior to this thread), but generally speaking the people trying to stop the war are patriots of the highest caliber and deserve your respect.
I respect many of the anti-war folks here, but the crowds I’m seeing on CNN and other media look to be the usual mix of aging hippies who miss the 60’s, petulant teenagers who are rebelling to fit in with their age group, and the “AmeriKKKa is EEE-vul” far-left activists who are praying for 9/11 to happen again so they can gloat.
And they are easy to distinguish because, surprise, they ain’t throwing rocks at national guard troops, or macing cops or what have you.
Everyone in this thread agrees that peaceful protest is fine and even encouraged. We are seeing a minority on the TV, but they realize as well as we do that they are on TV because of their fuckwit antics.
Peaceful protest is fine, peaceful protest is good, and I agree with at least part of the anti-war sentiment. But these pieces of shit make me want to side with the warhawks, just to not be associated with them. People like this are right up there with PETA protesters.
OTOH, you gotta admit…takes a set of brass nuts (or mind-boggling stupidity) to lay down in a New York city intersection, especially 5th Avenue. I’m truly amazed no one got run over.
One of them was driving a semi! I would have liked to seen the looks on those protestors as they saw an 18-wheeler bearing down on them.
And that’s exactly what happened to the King marchers.
Look, I’m not saying I necessarily support their tactics. All I’m saying is that I sort of see where they’re coming from. In their minds, park gatherings and weekend get-togethers with sandwich boards didn’t make much of stir, whereas literally laying their lives on the line by lying down in traffic made one hell of an impression. In their view they think: “So? We inconveinenced people for a relatively short period of time. Try driving to work in Bagdad right now.” They see it as sort of petty to be complaining about being late for work when children are having their legs ripped off by bombs. (As I said, I’m not necessarily agreeing with them-- I just think we should try to see it from their point of view.)
I do agree that those who assaulted police officers deserve to be smacked upside the head (and worse). Those are the real fuckwits, along with those who damaged property. I have no sympathy for them. They give true peace protestors a bad name. They’re just thugs looking for an excuse to cause mayhem.
