Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 43c/6f with a predicted high of 11c/51f and cloudy. Weather app says “It’s fucking dreich out. Please pronounce “dreich” like you’re spitting at the fucking sky.” Yes, it’s cloudy out there but otherwise, it’s ok.
Today is the anniversary of the Battle of Hastings in 1066, beginning the Norman Conquest of England. It’s also the anniversary of the publication of Conan Doyle’s “Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” in 1892.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN 'Tis 60 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 84 and N.O.S. Today will be a day of high RDOS inactivity. We have nowhere we need or want to be, so we shall loll about da cave. Sounds like a fine plan to me. Sup shall be well, I don’t know what to call it, but 'twill be cabbage, snausages, onions, 'n N.O.T. all cooked together and cornbread. There’s probably a name for it, but I don’t know what it might be.
Here in Amurrika it’s Columbus/Indigenous Peoples Day. What that means for me is that there will be no mail. Make of that what you will.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.
Happy Moanday/Columbus/Indigenous Peoples Day Y’all!
Morning all. Another beautiful day in N. Ali-bama, 53F heading to only 70F, so may open up the windows around the house this morning and give the place a good airing out. No soccer today (the sun is setting about 6:15pm and I start practice about 5:30), but shopping-sammich-swimming-sauna are all on the agenda.
As for today in history, did a little googling and Nikita Khrushchev was ousted today and Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier, among other things.
Happy RDOS Day, swampy
Wheelie, enjoy Texas.
And off to do the Moanday internettin’; have a good week all.
Good morning everyone! It’s a foggy 50F here and looking to be a lovely afternoon.
Hubs has started filling a glass with ice and water for Jolene. He seems to think that if she has her own glass she will leave his glass alone. He honestly is a very smart man, despite being so silly about some things.
In 1964, Rev. Martin Luther King is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for advocating a policy of non-violence. I just learned that. I was only 10 when it happened, so it wasn’t on my pre-teen radar.
Another momentous happening - I finally decided to do what my cardiologist told me to do back in July - I did 30 minutes on my treadmill, as I plan to do daily. My new morning routine will be shoulder exercises (my right shoulder has been bugging me forever) followed by walking while watching a documentary of choice. Currently it’s a French series about famous dates in history. (The narrator is speaking French, but another narrator is speaking English over him. My knowledge of French is far too limited for a documentary.) Today’s was about Alexander the Great’s death, plus the life that led up to it. Tomorrow’s is the year 33 - I leave you to guess what that event is…
I came up to shower and found MIL sitting on her bed, dozing, wearing one pair of unders, another pair just above her knees, and her slacks pulled up not quite to her knees. A little later I asked if she’d weighed herself - we’re tracking possible water retention associated with congestive heart failure - and she said she was 28.82#… Then she went back to her bathroom and the scale said 100.6#. The mental degradation has gotten scary.
Today is a video visit with the Dr in charge of Hospice to determine if she should remain in the program. I think there’s little doubt of that.
I was going to respond to some comments from the last MMP, but my brain is mush at the moment and I’m not motivated to go back, so just assume I answered you with somethint witty and/or profound.
It’s 52F and partly cloudy at the moment. The morning will consist of a mix of clouds and sun, becoming cloudy with periods of light rain this afternoon and a high temperature of 66F.
On this day in history, well, there is so much to choose from; in 1322, Robert the Bruce defeated King Edward II at the battle of Old Byland, forcing Edward to accept Scotland’s independence, in 1586 Mary, Queen of Scots, went on trial for conspiracy against Queen Elizabeth I of England, in 1805, Lewis and Clark were exploring the Columbia and Snake rivers after having entered what is now Washington state four days prior.
JtC, the filling-the-glass thing just for the dogs won’t work for me; it has to be MY glass. Consequently, I now drink water from my insulated water bottle.
FCM, I’m just sending you hugs because of the whole MiL thing.
Nellie, some people just can’t be nice. I’m both glad and not surprised that you were kind. I’m surprised no one on the bus told the Karen to shut her trap.
I tried sleeping in today. Maisie wasn’t having it, so I was up at 4:45 a.m. Maybe I’ll take a nap today.
It’s 55 degrees this morning, which ain’t so bad. Yesterday was in the 80s, today’s high will be 59, and windy too.
No park this am as we have an appointment with the accountant.
Every year I swear I will have my taxes done my April 15, and every year I am scrambling to get them done by October 15.
It has been a mess as I thought I had everything and then realized I had not much of anything. After tearing the house apart looking for the missing forms it finally dawned on me to get them online and print them out myself. Which created a whole new set of problems with expired passwords that needed to be reset, and a printer that no longer irked. Printers seem to be like cars, if you let them sit too long they stop irking.
It’s nice to know I am not the only f up, as the accountant is quite busy. Also, my son’s irk password is one of the ones that expired. After getting it reset, I couldn’t find his W-2 online. HIs company went to a new system and all the data had not be transferred over. I know this because I texted his boss to ask if she knew where to find the info and found out we are not the only ones who called to ask.
So was a very busy and sometimes frenzied weekend. We got a lot done, not as much as I had hoped, but my ToDo List is considerably shorter.
I am fed up with the trash service we use. Once again, the recycling was cancelled. It happens a lot and the recycling is building up. We still have boxes in the garage from when we moved here a year ago. I had hoped to take it to the dump, but we never made it. I hope this next week, because I want all the cardboard gone.
I looked into other companies, and from their ratings and reviews, I doubt any of them are any better. I got very pissed with this company because I wanted to schedule an extra pickup or get a dumpster. I can’t find the info on the website, and their AI chat is worthless. I finally got a live person chat who told me I have to call. Then when I called, I was told it has to be done through the website.
My boys caused a little trouble at daycare, but they said it’s nothing they can’t handle. Rayleigh (they think) was playing well with some other dogs and Misiu (they think) joined in and the two ganged up on another dog. The daycare separated them and all was good. I don’t care if they separate them, they can do whatever they need to do. Echo used to be put into time outs because she liked to play too rough sometimes. It’s not going to hurt my feelings if one or all have to be reprimanded. I’m sorry when my dogs’ bad behavior cause them any extra irk.
The people at the daycare can’t tell my boys apart, they often come home in the wrong harness, which then causes confusion for us. I’ll see the blue harness and think why is Misiu acting so weird, and then I see it’s Rayleigh in the wrong harness.
Winnie the Pooh was published this day in 1926.
William Penn was born in 1644.
The Bay Bridge offcially opened in 1952.
Johns Hopkins allowed women students in1893, making it the first co-educational medical school in the US.
Willow, a baby giraffe, was born at the Maryland Zoo in 2016. The tallest newborn giraffe in the country at 6 feet tall.
Of course, I knew all of this off the top of my head, LOL. linkiepoo
Time to get ready for our appoinment with the accountant.
I hope we can get a parking space near the door. Last visit I had to park next to a tree and it was tight opening the door. We’ll have the dogs with us and it will be nice to be able to keep an eye on them through the window. On a good note, I was able to parallel park on the first try without having to go forward and back. When I lived in Baltimore, I could parallel park like it was nothing. I lost that skill a long time ago. I was pleasantly surprised to park perfectly. There’s always so much traffic and I start to get nervous when people have to wait behind me.
35F upon awaking this morning. Our heat is still not working and it’s only a matter of time before the building insulation won’t be enough to keep out the cold. I’ve told them repeatedly about this without result, so I guess it’s time to be an asshole about it. Of course, they won’t remember that I have been reasonable about it for the past couple of weeks, so I’ll become “that guy”. We do have a portable heater, but only a fool would leave one of those on all night.
Have dropped off my phone at the repair place. They said “this is a known problem with these phones, you are probably eligible for a replacement”, so we’ll see how that goes.
And the weather guessers are mumbling about snow tonight.
Hope everyone else has a better start to the week.
Off the top of my head, I can’t think of anything important in New Mexico or Albuquerque history on this day, but it is the first day after the Balloon Fiesta. This means that the skyline has become less picturesque, a lot of tourists are happily on their way home, and driving should be a little less terrifying.
We’re flying to MI on Thursday for Older Daughter’s baby shower. We booked flights with her childhood best friend, who’s bringing her 14-month-old, so we’ll get some baby practice in. Daughter the Younger is already there, having driven up two weeks ago to help paint the nursery and get some home projects done. I’m really looking forward to seeing them, although that doesn’t include looking forward to the actual trip part. I keep telling myself “it’s only a long weekend” when I start worrying about the empty house. Our catsitter is the most reliable person on earth, and we’ve known her for over twenty years, so there’s absolutely no call for alarm.
I skimmed last week’s thread last night, and it’s all a jumble in my head. I hope all the sickies are feeling better, and Sticky_Buns, good luck on the job search! It’s really nice that you have a little breathing room to find something that’s right for you.
FCM, I’m sorry to hear about Higgs. It’s almost impossible not to feel guilty when you have to make that kind of decision. He was doing the right thing by Higgs; I’ve known people to take their desperately ill, suffering pets home to think about it because they just couldn’t face giving the okay. It must have been a terrible shock for both of you, to have it be so sudden.
It occurred to me this weekend that, although the weather here continues to be hot and dry, it’s not likely to still be summer in Michigan. I’m off to Tarjay to find warmer clothes that a) aren’t the ones I’ve been lounging around the house and gardening in for the past three years and b) fit. All my comfy pants seem to have shrunk in the closet over the summer.
I posted this by mistake in the previous MMP, but it fits in here with the same day theme.
Over in the DeathPool it has been reported that leading Scots politician Alexander Salmond has passed. Never met him, but I know who he is from themed lists I’ve done. It kind of gets to me because he and I share a birthday, 12/31/54. When someone just your age dies it’s kind of a wakeup. Now I just don’t want German engineer and race driver Herman Tilke to go, I’d start getting nervous.
Thanks for reminding me it’s a holiday here in the States, gang. That reminder adjusted my to-do list (one entry was contacting a government office).
So what DO we have on tap today? Digging some boxes of books out of the Closet From Hell to load contents onto the bookcase I assembled yesterday, hope to hear back from the body shop about when they can expect needed parts for the Jeep so we can then let the insurance people know about when we’ll need the rental, run some laundry, and I’m sure there’s something that’s not coming to mind.
Buddy has a vet appointment tomorrow, and has now taken to hiding under the bed when he sees a carrier coming out (grump). I also suspect he reads my posts here, so gets advance warning about these things.

Autumn is definitely back today…yay! It’s currently 62°F and mostly sunny, with a steady breeze punctuated by healthy gusts. It’s only supposed to hit 64 later today with an overnight low of 40, and it should be much like this for the rest of the month. I have the storm door’s bottom pane raised a few inches for Bailey’s entertainment: even with no other windows open the house is a bit chilly, but an oil heater on a low setting is keeping this room comfortable.
I got some sad news a couple of hours ago: an uncle’s beloved sister-in-law died early this morning, after a 7-month battle with cancer. She was only 60. It’s not a personal loss (I hadn’t seen her in decades), but my uncle and aunt are devastated and my heart’s a little broken for them. I’m extra glad that work is quieter than a typical Monday would be: despite the federal holiday it isn’t a corporate holiday, but a bunch of folks took the day off (my boss and his deputy are both out, and I have no meetings today).
A quick Google search turned up no historical DC events today, but there were two yesterday:
10/13/1792 - The cornerstone of the White House was laid
10/13/1976 - The first electron micrograph of an Ebola viral particle was obtained by Dr. F.A. Murphy, working at the CDC
And, FWIW, Wednesday will be the 29th anniversary of the Million Man March.
I’m not crazy about her face – kinda looks like home plate – but I get why that would be the easiest/simplest thing to do. I’m toying with the idea of finding a picture of her face, sizing it, and printing it on a clear label. This was probably the most boring build I’ve done in a while (no cool little details or interesting bits at all), but I’m happy with the result.
You may notice that I’ve done some combining and now have two available shelves/spots. At this time, I have no idea what will be next – but I can’t display any other tall sets in this corner unless the footprint is roughly the same as Liberty’s (I could maybe put her/something her size behind 3PO and R2, on another acrylic riser).
Catching up on the end of the last MMP before diving in here…
Way to ruin oatmeal cookies.
The local grocery store’s bakery makes a pretty good oatmeal cranberry cookie.
I totally get that…but I kinda hope she saves her child by not homeschooling her. Yanno?
(Fart, that is.)
My father doesn’t care for animals but my mom always loved cats, and we had a couple when I was a kid. Shortly before we went to England, we got a kitten with an audible gas problem: when we’d all be hanging out in the living room reading or watching TV or whatever, Dad would read a newspaper and studiously ignore the kitty…but whenever she’d fart, we’d hear “heh heh heh” from behind the paper. (We wound up not able to keep her, because of the move to England – which hadn’t been known/planned at the time she was adopted – and the quarantine laws. Mom decided it would be much kinder/better for the cat if someone else adopted her; my brother and I reluctantly agreed. Dad was happy.)
Success! The heat is on! Now I can stop thinking dark thoughts and turn my brain to deep phili. . .philla. . .thinking stuff.
Breakfast was steel cut oatmeal made with thyme, topped with a fried egg and bacon. Yogurt on the side. Dinner will be as-you-make-it, so a lazy day ahead.
Bestirred myself for Chick-fil-A (yay, chicken minis! haven’t had them in so long!) thinking they stop breakfast at 11.
Got there at 10:45 … NOPE it was 10:30. Drove all that way for nuthin’.
Could’ve gotten a mini breakfast thingie at Tim Horton on the way home but was too pissed at driving 15-20 minutes for something I could’ve gotten right up the street, so now I’m sitting here sad and hungry.
Yeah, I know, I’m my own worst enemy.
Also still upset about my neighbor and his … stay out of my blurred Pit post … but I just can’t get my “happy smile, eat lots! and get shit done” face on today.
She really does have him wrapped around her little finger paw, doesn’t she?
The Dr. needs to know ALL the bad things.
If it makes you feel any better, one year I got them filed the weekend after (U.S.) Thanksgiving.
Coupla months later it was “tax season” again, and I was like, “Didn’t I JUST do this?!”
Oh, gawd, been there. Nearly threw my phone across the house, I got so mad!
Can they stay in their harness?
Alternative solution: nail polish (on the dog’s toenails) to match their harness colors?
Alternative alternative solution: Assume incorrect harnesses.
Why not?
Mine is ancient and still has lots of safety features. I’m sure yours is newer & less decrepit.
Don’t run it near blowing curtains or loose paper, but I can’t think what else would be wrong.
Lots of people leave slow cookers running all night, for ex.
Wait, outside, or inside?
Cuz I like things cool, but I’d friggin’ riot over indoor temps like that.
… not really, I’d just put on thick socks & warm myself by seething internally.
Highs in the 50s/60s, lows in the 40s but they’re talking about 30s soon.
This is on the lakeshore, out on the far west … further inland towards Detroit is out of my jurisdiction. If you’re heading U.P. then … well, that’s above my pay grade.
Good morning, kids! It’s October-y as heck here in South St. Paul, a cloudy-cool 45 degrees out. I kicked my heater on and it’s nice and cozy.
It’s been a hectic few months at work. Lots of big projects hitting their “make it happen” stage, but I think we’re just about on the other side… Hoping for a much quieter winter. Pretty much everything has ended in success though, so I’m feeling ever-more-confident in my position.
Some real good news a while ago: Junior the Cat no longer needs insulin! He’s in remission, his weight and blood sugar look great. So not only is my li’l pal the picture of health, but I’m no longer tethered to home for twice-daily injections. That’s freed me up to make plans to go home to CA for Christmas, which will be real good for my heart.
