Please believe me on this - and you’re welcome to disbelieve me, but as a political dead-center moderate with less partisan interest in American politics than you seem to have, and as a guy who’s travelled a LOT in the USA, I think I have a decent read on this - the hatred and vitriol that goes the other way in the USA, especially from the social/Christian conservative movement, is quite extreme in its level of personal contempt. There are millions of Republicans who do not believe Democrats are people wit hbad ideas; they believe Democrats are bad people. There is a reason that a book by a TV blowhard accusing liberals of being traitors sold millions of copies. It’s not just a handful of extremists. It’s every bit as significant a part of the right as the Diogenes-the-Cynics are of the left.

I am not an example of someone like that on the left. My opinion on Snow and the Bushista et al has nothing to do with left-right ideology. I don’t think McCain is evil. I don’t think Bush Sr. was evil. I don’t think Reagan was evil. I’m not even sure that W is evil. I think his administration is evil, though, and not because they disagree with me on capital gains taxes.
