A lot of threads that end up on these lists are really just a great OP, followed by a bunch of people saying how great it was (“The Horror of Blimps” is a prime example of this). They might as well have been blog posts. “What if LotR had be written by someone else”, though, was chock-full of contributions from a great many posters, so I’d have to give it first place.
Yeah, that’s my favorite.

The Horror of Blimps was very good. Reminds me of the time I punched out a window in the middle night because my brother got locked out of the house and was trying wake me to let him in.
My favorite was from a dude who got himself banned from a local Y for going vigilante on a dude who had wrongfully parked in a handicap spot.

Posts on both sides of the argument and nearly no one will see/acknowledge the otherside. Every few months or so, someone will arrive and revive it and people will get sucked in.
I’m really tempted to revive it right now because someone posted a YouTube clip to the film that has the alternate ending exactly as described (though you can’t hear the sound.) Wouldn’t that end the debate?

The “Lord of the Rings if written by someone else” thread. It was what brought me to SDMB in the first place - someone from a writer’s forum sent me the link. I didn’t sign up for a long time but I bookmarked the site and started lurking frequently.
The annual Celebrity Death Pool thread. The snarkiness, oh, the snarkiness. It’s good.
The Pigeon thread. I’m not sure why the pidgee saga is so entertaining, but I’ve been following it for ages now and I never fail to click on any and all updates concerning Siam Sam’s feathered friends.
