Top Ten type lists: Funny Sci-Fi

I just watched a YouTube video about “the top ten sci-fi comedy films or TV shows” It eliminated films like Ghostbusters that had more of a supernatural bent rather than at least some science involved, and zombie films like Shaun of the Dead were also not accepted.

I was surprised at how much I agreed with most of the list, although I’d never heard of a couple of the films. But the list was spoiled when, for #1, a film was listed(I won’t say what it was) that I found it hard to believe was on the list at all, and that I considered to be crap.

So I want to do a poll of what Dopers would consider to be the funniest sci-fi comedy films. If the thread lasts say, a week or more I’ll compile the top twenty mentioned films into a poll, narrow that down to ten, and do a final poll for those.

So, to kick off I consider Galaxy Quest to be the best, with Paul a close second, What do the rest of you say?

Spaceballs, of course!

By the way, it may help your poll if you have a more descriptive thread title.

I already sent a message to a mod asking for a change, I hit enter too quickly, before I added “Sci-fi comedies” to the title

Thanks for the edit!!!

Back To The Future has to be on there, right?

So we have

**Galaxy Quest

Paul

Spaceballs**

I’ll add

Hardware Wars (including the unauthorized “Special Edition”)

**Airplane 2

The Creature Wasn’t Nice** (AKASpaceship, and, after the success of The Naked Gun, as The Naked Space) – hit-or-miss musical (!) parody of Alien, starring Cindy Williams, Patrick MacNee, and Leslie Nielsen. From writer/producer/director/composer/actor Bruce Kimmel. His First Nudie Musical is much better. But you have to love a film with a song entitled “I want to eat your face”.

Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (all versions)

I would nominate Dark Star, John Carpenter’s first film, and Guardians of the Galaxy. I know this is a super-hero movie, but it had many science fictional elements.

At that, MEN IN BLACK.

And, as long as I’m here: BILL & TED’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE.

Oh I loved Bill and Ted!

*“Oh, you beautiful babes of England…”

“Excuse me, do you know when the Mongols ruled China?”
*

Guardians of the Galaxy.

And, does Young Frankenstein count as science fiction? I think it does.

A quick scan through wiki starting in the 80’s. I’m adding the ones I’ve seen, I think are funny, and not already mentioned…I’m sure there are more but this is the limit of my attention span at the moment.

Flash Gordon 1980
Night of the Comet 1984
Repo Man 1984
Bad Taste 1987
Robocop 1987
I 'll list Freejack only because it was laughably terrible
Idiocracy was sorta funny, even if a terrible movie.
Helldriver

Galaxy Quest
Young Frankenstein
Ghostbusters (the original one)
Back to the Future
Men in Black
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure
Mystery Men

Sleeper

Star Trek 4. And take Spaceballs off the list. That movie was a pathetic waste of celluloid.

ST4 had humor, but I don’t think it was really a comedy. Loved the movie though. I agree about Spaceballs

I’ll nominate these, but Galaxy Quest kills the category:

Earth Girls are Easy
Mars Attacks

Brazil, if you like your comedy rather dark.
Americathon

Hiss boo!

Loved both of those, too. Also, would Army of Darkness count?
