Hello fellow Chicagoans and those who get the MeTV channel.
Just thought I’d mention that this Saturday, October 1st at 7:00 PM Central Time, Svengoolie will be showing Trilogy of Terror. Yep, the one with the legendary Zuni fetish doll.
For those of you unfamiliar with the movie, here’s a summary:
First story - Meh.
Second story - Not so meh as the first story.
Third story - OH MY GOOOOD!!!
So, make sure to tune in to the last half of the show at least.
Unfortunately Svengoolie is no longer available around here. It was available on MeTV that was carried by the local NBC affiliate until Sep. 1. I think they’ve heard a lot of complaints about this change but I doubt they’d pick it up again anytime soon.
Anyway, we had an actual wooden doll like that, not as horrifyingly ugly, but it teetered on a poorly carved base and had tendency to fall off any shelf we placed it on hitting the floor with a very loud thunk or the sounds of breaking whatever it landed on. We were pretty sure that thing was cursed.
We don’t get MeTV any more, either. I miss not only Svengoolie, but Star Trek, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and especially Lost in Space. ‘Oh, the pain!’
Kind of an upgrade of movie, Svengoolie shows The Wolfman and Creature from the Black Lagoon each about once a month.
Umm, TriPolar was talking about plain vanilla network TV, available for zero dollars.
We now have some streaming options, but we still spend most of our time watching all these free channels (each network has a couple of free additional digital channels, MeTV is NBC channel 15-4 here), courtesy of a basic antenna.
Okay, well, we did spend $25 on an upgraded antenna…
I got MeTV on local cable. Svengoole is again Philo on Roku for $25 a month. I have enough paid streaming services just to watch one show. It won’t be long before there’s only a handful of streaming services left and then it will be worth it to pay a couple of them for everything I watch on TV including cable.
Being a mere kid of 11 or 12 when Trilogy Of Terror was first broadcast. I sat up late and watched the whole thing, yawning through the first two stories to get to the “Prey” segment. Of course, I had the juvenile shit scared out of me by that tale! I’ve seen it twice since then, and I have to confess: the animated “He Who Kills” actually cracked me up laughing both times, because the way he runs around at hyperspeed growling and muttering just reminds me of the Tasmanian Devil. I just couldn’t stop giggling madly every time he was onscreen.
The last few seconds of the story though…that closeup of Karen Black’s face…oh yeah, that still holds up all too well. Brr-rrr-rrr.
