Trolls R Us redux [Now the argument clinic]

I did not notice that both socks were participating in the Tebow thread, and both were causing trouble with attempts to derail the thread, with at least one personal attack (which led to an actual warning). I was tempted to respond to either of them but they were so off-topic that I didn’t want to participate in any hijacks. Wow, I can’t believe I didn’t notice they were the same clowns (or I should say, clown).

For clarification of @Darren_Garrison 's link, I was a bit confused until I realized there a full strip linked in the text just below the single frame.

It would have helped to link to the actual full strip, then it wouldn’t have seemed weird.

Max_S started out looking like a dickish troll to me, but (while he’s often still annoyingly Vulcan in threads that don’t need it) he’s OK.

I don’t have anyone on ignore, but Max is the only one I’ve considered, precisely because he’s not a troll - but it’s just too tiring and frustrating to get drawn into his posts which are generally both hypertechnical and complete nonsense. I find him reminiscent of an A.I. that has been programmed (albeit poorly) with logic and debating techniques; but has not been trained at all on the dataset that is reality.

IIRC, in the very early days of the Pit – back when Lynn was in charge and suspensions had yet to be implemented – one temporary ban was the result of someone who kept pushing her button by repeatedly posting ASCII art. I don’t remember who it was but they eventually became a worthwhile member.

Thanks.

Was it this?

Ah, yep. @Ilsa_Lund was the one.

Thanks.

Apparently, they didn’t stick around much longer after that.

While not all trolls follow the pattern of “newish poster who starts a button-pushing thread”, I believe everyone who matches the pattern “newish poster who starts a button-pushing thread” ends up being a troll.

Not necessarily-If someone comes from another board that actually encourages such behavior, they might think it is normal to act in such a manner.

I agreed on not necessarily, but I can’t recall a counter-example.

LauderdaleFort anyone? Account set up a year ago, 10h total read time = 10h recent read time. A dubiously-motivated thread about Kamala, with the thread title originally misspelled Kalama (it was corrected by a mod). Now a thread “Guys, who’s hotter, you or your wife” - immediately closed [now up and running]. I predict a less-than-bright future here.

Actually only one month ago.

I participated in a thread with him about Tony La Russa (baseball), and he was entirely normal and reasonable. He reminds me of Yankees_1996_Champs who also had a mix of normal sports posts and aggressively white male posts.

Then again, Yankees also had similarities to our departed stucco friend. It’s not like aggressively white male who likes sports is a rare breed.

As for Laudy, I’m not calling troll yet. Yet.

I’m not doing very well reading profiles, am I? This time I know what I did - misread “May 10th” as “May '20”. In my defense, I think others have complained about the confusing date formatting in Discourse when it jumps from month-day to month-year.

We were pretty sure Gadzooks was a sock of Stucco but weren’t sure. Then Gaddy went ahead and made it almost certain. Added to this, Stucco is probably the sock of an older account that got warned many times. So he’ll probably be back again with a new incarnation.

If he plays nice we probably won’t notice, if he starts trolling or insulting other posters again, we’ll be banning another sock.

So it goes.

Two on the board, one on the keyboard.

DANG did you ever nail that one.

Can I recruit some people to come into the “Whale Tries To Eat Man” thread to help me defend my (obviously correct) interpretation of the Bible verse “Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD”? Preferably with extensive cites from the Quran, medieval literature etc.
