Vicious they are, thugs they are, but an army (at least in the traditional sense) they are not. They — especially the more recent recruits — don’t have the training, they don’t have the discipline, and they don’t have the, for want of a better word, guts. They’re great for harassing and disappearing people who are in no position to resist them, but one has only to look at Minneapolis or New York to see what they do when they encounter determined opposition. If faced with a real army, I strongly suspect they’d fold like a cheap card table. Those who didn’t cut and run.
According to their own racist standards they very much are. They are just as much an Army (actually, much more so) as the supposed hordes of “illegal aliens” who are “invading” the country and “poisoning our blood.”

While Trump may entertain lurid fantasies of being dictator/emperor/king/etc… I’m also pretty sure that the people yanking his strings have a vested interest in keeping the system going and benefitting from its legitimacy.
I mean, if they were to seriously try to get Trump in office in 2028 through ostensibly legal means, that would be a massive Constitutional crisis, and doing it through extra-legal means would be cause for insurrection, plus while SCOTUS is friendly to Trump and the GOP, they’re not beholden to them, and I suspect there’s a line somewhere that they wouldn’t countenance being crossed. I’m pretty sure a coup or anything not legally ironclad enough to circumvent the actual 1787 wording of the Constitution would be on the far side of that line.
Plus, by keeping the system intact, they can play the same game they’re already doing- when in office, change stuff through the usual ways if they have the legislative oomph, by fiat if they have the presidency but not enough to push stuff through Congress, and dogged, irrational resistance when they can’t get anything done, along with painting every loss of theirs as an injustice and grievance. Plus, by doing that when the Democrats aren’t, they sort of maintain the “initiative” by forcing the Democrats to spend a fair amount of their time in power reacting to stuff they’re doing or about to do, rather than actually doing stuff of their own.

Memories do tend to be very short. I saw this (under 2 minutes) video today and found it actually shocking—the degree to which Republicans openly expressed their contempt for Donald.
Of course today they utter only the most obsequious of praise. But they knew then–and they know now.

Even if he deleted some of the posts, it certainly still exists on X and since the “Elon deleted this video yesterday” post, it’s on youtube, bluesky, imgur, all over reddit, and probably everywhere else you can share videos.
Regardless, that’s the type of video that needs to be circulating more and more as we move towards midterms. Remind all these people’s MAGA constituents that they’re voting for someone that, not that long ago, was as anti-Trump/anti-MAGA as the left. Force these people to come to terms with the fact that they voted these politicians into office, at least in part, on them being anti-Trump, then they voted for Trump because these same politicians told them to.
I mean, we’ve been beating that drum for a decade now, but the more we do it, the more people will leave the MAGA cult.

I have a BIL that voted for Trump. He agreed that the insurrection was really bad. And then voted for Trump again. These people are unreachable.
