Why would saying he’d be dead within 10 years ‘freak out’ his allies? That would take him to almost 90. Do they expect him to live forever?

Today is the anniversary of Indian actor Sabu Dastagir (27 January 1924). He died of a heart attack a month before his 40th birthday. I think Trump has overstayed.

Yes, I think this may be part of it as well. It will be interesting to see the stories that come out after he dies about how deeply he is hated by Republicans.

Why? once he’s gone they’ll consider him a saint and fight for his legacy.
I wouldn’t count on it. For a lot of loathsome strategists on the right, he’s a useful figurehead. Once he’s gone, I expect he’s going to be a liability. He is not going to have a great legacy among anyone other than the true cultists, and once he’s gone that demographic won’t have nearly as much motivation at the polls.
I’m sure there will be another fascist waiting in the wings to take over, but I don’t know that there is going to be anyone with that unique personality and circumstance to have the impact Trump did. My suspicion is that whoever comes along later will be more subtle, insidious, and competent than Trump (and probably a lot more dangerous).
I thing you couldn’t be more wrong, but we’ll see, hopefully soon.

The Soviet Union went through a de-Stalinization process following the death of Stalin. The politburo didn’t exactly refute Stalin, but they tried to pull back on his style of terror tactics and tried to ensure they wouldn’t have another dictator like him. There’s always going to be someone who loves people like Stalin. I had an intern from Kazakhstan a few years ago who couldn’t stop gushing over how great Stalin was. I don’t even remember how that conversation got started.
Trump’s faithful will always be there. I do think a lot of weasels are going to explain how they didn’t like Trump but just had to lick his boots for one reason or another. Or they’ll say they tried to be the adult in the room.
The past few days it’s definitely felt more like a Stalin administration than like that other famous mustachioed dictator. I don’t even think the Austrian painter had as blatant a case of creating a fall guy than with Bovino. I’m surprised that we haven’t seen pictures AI-doctored to remove his likeness.
My birthday is June 12. (It falls on International June the 12th Day this year!
