It’s a nice gesture, but it’s optional to put your hand over your heart for the national anthem. It is permissible to stand respectfully with your hands at your sides while it is being played.
That is true.
In Trump’s case, he may be instinctively avoiding any gesture that implies allegiance to something else (the flag). He probably feels that the flag should be showing respect to him, rather than the other way 'round.

I watched the video that “debunks” the “misleading” claims and the most charitable thing one can say is that Trump has abysmal aim, if he was trying to toss it back to the same kid.
I can see why he took a pass on the first pitch; he would’ve killed a cameraman.
