You forgot the possible co-defendant in the case: the publisher of a free, weekly, alternative newspaper. There’s BIG BUX in suing them!
I’m a great believer in second chances and the possibility of redemption. In that regard, I think letting TD back as a member is fine.
But the lapse of judgement she displayed is to the extent that I would expect she no longer should have any position of authority on the SDMB.
So how do I feel? Not surprised, but somewhat disappointed.
In other words, “We’re just going to do the usual and make like it never happened.”
This pretty much sums up my feelings.
Er, except for the part about the AOL days.
But I’m here to testify that she’s been working her ass off since May 2000, at least.
And after having waited to renew to see if Tuba’s return would mean the Death Of The SDMB, I now see that evidently it won’t–it’s going to be Business As Usual. Another day, another crisis. Ho hum.
I wouldn’t miss it for anything.
It won’t matter at all to any of you, but as a guest, I thought this whole sorry incident illustrated that the Admins/Moderators could really give a fuck. The shutting down of the thread where the moderator (DEX) is called out for frivolous replies to legitimate privacy concerns is just one more instance of the mods “Not getting it.” No amount of promises regarding the separation of financial and personal information from these board moderators should be trusted. They don’t give a damn and it shows.
You won’t miss me, but you won’t get my money either. Thanks for showing that friends are more inportant than ethics…
People can lurk without posting for years, whether they have an account or not.
I’magine the reason they’re “stirring the shit now” is told right up there in the topic. It wouldn’t make much sense to start crowing about TubaDiva coming back with admin privileges intact before she came back with admin privileges intact. I do think the thread title reads like she came back after less than 30-days of suspension, which isn’t the case (by my search it seems she was gone for a little over 30 days).
I still don’t think she should be anything other than a regular user officially (unofficially, I’d still expect people to value her advice and opinions), but given that I’d completely forgotten about this particular teapot… meh.
I would lose sleep over the issue if I wasn’t so tired from, you know, having a life.
I don’t have a goat in this rodeo, but if it’s okay I’d like to make a couple of observations:
I was a lurker long before I ever registered, and although I am familiar with many of the traditions of this board, I have to admit ignorance to much of this particular situation.
I used to own and run a discussion board not unlike this one (although defined to a more narrow objective). I had as many as 16,000 members registered at a given time. I never looked at it as a privilege to moderate or administrate. Frankly, it sucked worse than a Celine Dion cover version of Whole Lotta Love.
It is work. Those who helped me moderate it were never reimbursed in any way. I am deeply grateful for the help they gave. And I know that they worked their collective asses off to keep it from disintegrating into a smoldering pile of can’t-get-it-off-your-mind-or-off-your-shoe dogshit.
Without them, this board would collapse in less than a week. In my opinion, if that allows them a little leeway with a botched tango or a staggered two-step now and again, I think it is fine with me and shouldn’t end up in a potential Gulf of Tonkin Incident.
Just MHO,
Euth
You know, I’m not concerned so much about privacy-I think they get that. No, I’m more concerned that Tuba has, in the past, shown that she has a tendency to let her personal feelings influence her decisions as an admin-and has made some pretty shady decisions based on that-the recent blow up, the magic tricks, vanilla’s banning, and the charity solicitation thread, not to mention the numerous, “don’t talk about TMI because I put this board on my resume.”
I like Tuba, but her record has some spots on it. Yes, she has done largely a good job. But this fuck up was one too many-especially considering how huge a fuck up it was.
Forgive me if I don’t believe she can be objective and keep her personal feelings from influencing her conduct as an adminstrator.
As for “Well, our board, blah blah blah,” that changed as soon as this place went pay. And I don’t think that some of the staff understands that things are different-they HAVE to be different.
Exactly what I wanted to say, only in words that make sense and refused to reach my fingertips. Strangely enough, also around the time I was originally trying to post it, so thank you for apparently being the translator for my gibberish, Nemo.
Try as I might, for some reason I just can’t get worked up over this issue.
I have GOT to get my ass to Brooklyn and pay an ever growing beer debt.
Right. I meant Dogpatch. That’s pretty obvious. :smack:
: Scuttles off and hides under rock :
What would her posting in this thread accomplish? She’d just get piled on like nobody’s ever been piled on before. That does nobody any good.
Sorry, I mis-remembered when she was suspended. I was thinking that it happened on 2/13/05.
WHich, oddly enough, is the date of the sticky I asked you to read. Have you?
Well, now it’s 30 days later and she’s been reinstated with full administrative powers. Does that tell you something, maybe? Like maybe her actions were justified?
I think she deserves praise for identifying, outing and stopping an RSO who was using the SDMB to continue his predation on underage persons. She should have been given an award.
I’ll be sending some chocolate, and now that I see that she’s been completely reinstated, I’ll be renewing my subscription.
And you know that to be a fact? I must have missed that proof somewhere along the way. (If it is, then I’ll join in the “Hoorays”.)
Ah, more of the “But he was a SEX OFFENDER!!! EVIL!!!”
So that makes it okay for Tuba to act unprofessionally? To break board rules when she’s pissed off enough about something?
What if the allegations HAD been false? I’m not saying the admins made them up-I’m saying it’s possible that someone falsely accused said RSO. IT’s not Tuba’s place to play vigilante and tell everyone what’s going on.
I gave this example before. Let’s say that EddyTeddyFreddy* was known to have a history of stalking people. And she admitted this on the board. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, she is stalking me, contacting me through the board, and harassing me. I let the mods know and they ban ETF.
So she goes to LJ and kicks up a fuss, saying, “I don’t know WHAT the mods are talking about-I was banned for nothing!!!” And then Tuba comes barging in saying, “You liar-we KNOW you were stalking a Doper on the boards and here’s our proof-an article about your prior conviction for stalking!!! You’re doing it again and you’re gonna get caught! I can’t reveal this on the Dope but I can do it here!”
Well, now ETF KNOWS I dropped the dime on her, and decides to take measures to make sure that I keep my mouth shut.
So let’s say this person, this known SEX OFFENDER is guilty. Well, now he knows his victim squealed. Maybe he decides to get even?
*ETF knows I’m kidding here-I joked about this before, using her as a completely unlikely person as the hypothetical stalker.
It was dealt with. It’s over. The SDMB did not collapse. Drop it, you numbskulls.
I vote for an immediate thread closure.
