Ditto (the around over the Easter weekend bit - no-one I know admits to drinking Ribena Light, although Ribena Toothkind has its attractions ;)), and wife-less to boot, which makes things easier…
It might be worth waiting for the Brum-dust to settle before making *another *plan?
Hmmm. My favourite ticket website says I can get there for 212 Euros, per KLM no less. Still, I’ve been travelling (and spending!) a lot as of late, so I’ll have to give it some thought.
I could do a 157 euro flight to Liverpool and catch a train down to Birmingham, but that’d probably end up costing the same.
I like the idea, but I think my attendance is unlikely, much as I’d love to down a few pints with the usual suspects, and a few new ones, no doubt.
Okay so. I’ve had a good look round and have found The Campanile Hotel. It’s central, canal-side, not too pricey and looks good. Rooms are £38 and it’s the same price for single or twin so people can save money by sharing. I’ve checked availability and there are plenty of rooms left. What do you think?
Also, if you’re going to travel on Virgin trains (and god help us, some of us have to), you can get half-price fares if you book now. Virgin’s website has handily used Birmingham as an example on this page.
oooh £7.50 from London to Birmingham… thats cheaper than going to see you Frannie! No fair!
I don’t know yet if I will be able to make it, but if I can I’m up for sharing a room, providing whoever I share with doesn’t mine me falling over drunk in the middle of the night.
If you really do want a lift then check out the fare to Leeds/Bradford airport, it may be cheaper and best of all is that I know where it is.
[sup](it’s the shiny silver things coming and going that lead me to suspect the actual location)[/sup]
If you are interested, then make it so your arrival is early, then we could go on down to the Motorcycle Museum I mentioned earlier.
Alas, the cheapest ticket to Leeds was nearly 500 euros!
The bike museum sounds interesting, I’ll keep it in mind for when I ever visit Birmingham. This times looks unlikely, though. Thanks for the offer of a lift though, it’s greatly appreciated.
Hmm. I just booked online, and I clicked this thing that asked whether I was going for business or pleasure, and I got this pop-up that offered me a … free introductory £20 wine voucher if I mix myself a case of wines …
And I thought to myself, “Self, where have we heard a story like this before?”
Heh! That’s the pigeon.
My shirty email did at least get an apology from them and an assurance that they wouldn’t contact me again. Can’t be arsed to bump the Pit thread.
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=174225 having decided to take up the £20 wine voucher I found myself needing to sign up on the Virgin wine site, signed up, browsed around, found that an ambiguously labelled button deposited a pre-mixed case in one’s shopping basket, removed goods from shopping basket, browsed some more, got bored, sodded off, next day got email from them saying “We noticed you put something in your basket but didn’t buy it, what’s the matter, please send us your phone number so we can call you back”, posted small rant on intrusive customer service techniques, sent slightly cleaned up portion of rant to Virgin in reply to their email, got apology, the end.
