Trump and the others should be prosecuted for sedition. Protests are one thing. Storming the Capitol building is something else entirely, particularly when they are doing this to prevent the election from proceeding.

Inciting a riot (18 U.S. Code § 2102) surely qualifies as a high crime or misdemeanor. As soon the Capitol is cleared of insurrectionists and Congress has counted the electoral votes, the House should immediately send one article of impeachment to the Senate before recessing for the day.
After the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch (in which 20 people were killed, including several police officers), Hitler was sentenced to 5 years, and served less than a year (in a very comfortable prison).
If the Weimar Republic had dealt with Hitler and his putschists more firmly, maybe we would just be calling it “Germany” instead of having to call it “the Weimar Republic”.
On the other side of the political spectrum, if Venezuela had dealt with Hugo Chávez more effectively after he tried to overthrow the government in a military coup, that country might not be in the state it is right now.
