(3) Sedition.
(a) That the accused created revolt, violence, or disturbance against lawful civil authority;
(b) That the accused acted in concert with another person or persons; and
(c) That the accused did so with the intent to cause the overthrow or destruction of that authority.
Finally, the possible punishments include death:
(b) A person who is found guilty of attempted mutiny, mutiny, sedition, or failure to suppress or report a mutiny or sedition shall be punished by death or such other punishment as a court-martial may direct."
I think the fact that they even had the rally, at that time and place, should be an impeachable event, even if the riot hadn’t happened.
There’s free speech and there’s brute intimidation. Have we drifted so far from the norm that encouraging 50 thousand people to yell at people that are just doing their jobs is acceptable?
The truth has been apparent for a while, Trump has been holding much of the Republican Congress hostage throughout most of his term, threatening to destroy their reputations and political careers if they break step with him in anything.
Like most of his crimes, it was committed in broad daylight in the public square, because if you do it openly and shamelessly and get a big enough chorus behind you insisting you didn’t do anything wrong - no one can stop you.
The Republicans knew a runaway boulder was heading downhill at full speed towards the country, but it was scary fast so they decided to let it pick up a little more speed before they tried to catch it.
I’m more convinced that ever that we will find financial fraud of an epic scale once we get into the White House and start going through the books. Lots of large and bogus contracts giving money to cronies and even White House staff.
One Trump fraud tactic that I learned from Stephanie Winston Wolkoff’s book Melania and Me is to overpay your cronies for work they do for your company, then expect them to work for free for you in a personal capacity. That’s what SWW described in her book. She talked about “only” making about $480,000.00 for her work for the Inaugural committee, then she described working for Melania for free for six months, and it was like she didn’t connect the two or see anything wrong with it.
She should be arrested, but really nothing is happening. We are in serious trouble here. The US will not survive this, the country as we have known it is over.
I don’t believe mhendo is focusing on that specifically. As I read him, he’s simply advocating that the insurrectionists’ charges be laid with precision and specificity. I am in agreement with him on this point, and in fact, I believe that virtually everyone in this thread is, too. That said, there does look to be a lot of kill ‘em all, let God sort ‘em out-flavored commentary in the discussion, and IMHO, that’s what he’s responding to.
ETA: And THAT said, I AM about 70 posts behind the curve here, and y track record suggests that within fifteen posts, I’ll be shown to have been shooting my mouth off.
If anyone else had have done this, it would have been kill em all. I agree there is a middle but it seems to me the decision is do nothing, or at best petty charges. That’s a problem.
I’ve just learned that Sicknick, the police officer killed in the insurrection, was not only from my home town, but also grew up on the street where I lived.
For Pete’s sake. Give it a day or two. Arresting a sitting representative on the charges that would be appropriate is a very serious thing. Think twice arrest once. She isn’t going anywhere and they know where to find her.
I think charges should be laid against people who committed crimes here. Some are probably easy to prove - invading a public building, causing a disturbance, destruction of public property and seditious acts. However, merely being present in the building does not by itself guarantee they were, or were aware of other individuals inclined to use violence against elected representatives. If there is evidence that this is the case for specific individuals, than it should be pursued in those cases. Unfortunately, people who took part in this had the good sense to wear masks, refrain from taking videos, avoid making statements on social media, not widely identify their goals to others, and not carry phones. Otherwise, they’d have to be real idiots to do something like that.
Pelosi would be president if they got to Pence right? MAGA was chanting kill Pence right? This is the bullshit I’m talking about. Everyone is trying to handwave this shit away.
