Van der Sloot's killed again!

Apparently not. But indeed, prison sounds worse. A prisoner would be on death row all the time, as he can be killed by another prisoner at any moment.

It’s being reported that there was signs of blunt force trauma and, depending on which report you read, there was a baseball bat or a tennis racquet found in the room.

A tennis racquet I could see him traveling with (if he plays) but a baseball bat, not so much.

I don’t think anything is going to happen to him in jail. They’ll probably put him in solitary or protective custody because he’s a “high-profile inmate.” If he got murdered or beaten up it would make the authorities look bad.

Hmm:

“According to La Republica newspaper, he said that his anger exploded and he broke Stephany Flores’ neck after she grabbed his laptop without his permission, and found out that he was involved in the disappearance of an American woman”

So, what does that mean? That she didn’t know who he was, looked around on his laptop and then found out that he was previously suspected in the Aruba case and he killed her because he lost control? Or that she found heretofore unknown incriminating details that he had secretly saved on his laptop and he killed her because of that? I mean, there has to be at least somebody who had never heard of this guy before.

Interesting. I hadn’t thought about that.

Oh, here we go again. He will say he did it. Then he will retract the statement. And issue it again. And retract it again. Whatever brings him the most benefits.

A Peruvian television station, Channel 4, said it had obtained details about Van der Sloot’s confession in which he reportedly told police that he killed Flores because he got angry when he found out that she had looked up information about his past on his laptop.

She probably Googled him really quick while he was in the bathroom or something. He discovers her reading his Wikipedia page, she realizes who she’s with, panics, starts for the door, he kills her in characteristic fit of rage.

Funny thing is
while I have nothing but contempt for Van der Sloot; I loved the Riply books from Patricia Highsmith, and part of me keeps wondering what Tom would do……

To be honest, I never really followed the Halloway stuff, and probably would not have recognized the guy’s name, and certainly not his face, without some prompting.

For example “Van der Sloot’s killed again!” was enough context for me to think “Oh, that must be the Aruba guy.” But if the thread title had been “Van der Sloot in Peru” I’d have had no idea who he was until I read more.

I’m guessing this won’t work quite as well when his confession was to the police, there’s an actual dead body, and when his father isn’t a judge in the country where he’s being tried. He’s going to be very surprised when retracting his statement doesn’t result in his release from custody.

I’m thinking “Booty Bandit” myself.

Interesting thread. I am fascinated to learn about this guy’s past, how he leveraged wealth and connections to wreak havoc across the globe. Reminds me of Jesse James Hollywood, the creep whose story was chronicled in the film Alpha Dog.

I would love to see the Dutch documentary where he confesses. I think clips are on YouTube, but I’m a little surprised that it hasn’t aired in an English-speaking country…

I am fairly certain that at least some of the footage has aired in the US. Here’s a clip that has some translated excerpts but the actual subtitles are in Dutch because of all the Caribbean slang.

As to wealth and connections, I’m sure the Van der Sloots were reasonably well of but not incredibly so and being a judge in training (Van der Sloot’s dads job before he was fired and became a lawyer) in Aruba is hardly the zenith of achievement in Dutch society nor is it associated with disproportionate wealth, so I think you’re off-base when you see this story as one of ‘leveraging wealth and connections’.

CNN is reporting that Van der Sloot confessed to killing this girl because she read incriminating things about Halloway on his laptop… it’s like a bad movie.

In 5 years he never gave a real confession to killing Natalie Holloway to law enforcement and yet he gives one within days to Peruvian law enforcement. I wonder if the interrogation process was ‘enhanced’.

Or…during the Holloway case he was in Aruba, where his father was a prominent judge. Now he’s in a foreign country, and his father is dead. No need to bash the Peruvians here. He lost his protector.

For whatever reason, Aruba is in the baseball territories of the Caribbean. Strange, because AFAIK more people play cricket than baseball in the Netherlands, but that may be more of a recent development.

No, but thanks for adding that to the conversation.

From CNN:

I’m still confused by the wording of all of these statements from the various articles.

Plus the Peruvians have a body.
