You are overstating the role of his father. He was no judge, let alone a prominent judge (there is no such thing, judges are judges); he was a judge in training. He clearly did stuff he should not have done by smuggling in a phone (for which he got fired) but he did not protect him from anything really serious; it’s not like the Aruba DA’s office *would *have been able to make the case against Joran van der Sloot, given the available evidence etc., if his dad had been a plumber.
Two new developments:
It’s been revealed(no great surprise) that Natalie Holloway’s mother was the person he extorted, though evidently indirectly. He agreed to tell where the body was for $25,000, then lied by saying her remains were in a house that was not there 5 years ago.

From the second article it sounds as if he may have meant to return and get rid of the body but before he could a hotel employee found the body. He owed two days room rent at the time which is why the employee entered his room in the first place.

He’ll be in his fifties at least if he ever gets out of jail in Peru. I doubt they’ll go through with the extortion charges in the US if anyone even remembers his ass thirty years from now. He’d have to stand trial in America first, wouldn’t he? I’m of the opinion that he will never leave Peru again.

I know it’s standard procedure in Thailand, and I’ve always found the practice to be bizarre. The police here claim it helps them weed out false confessors.
From what I’ve heard Peruvian prisons tend to just lock all the inmates together and not care what they do to eachother as long as nobody tries to escape or attack staffmembers. Mijnheer van der Sloot is a very high profile rich (at least by Peruvian standards) white foreigner who killed a local woman. He’ll probally die in jail (after repteadly finding out what it’s like to be on the other side of a gang rape).
I’m surprised that this thing has been going on for days and, AFAIK, Gloria Allred has not yet tried to insert herself into it.
The Peruvian newspaper, El Comercio, is reporting that the Colombians are also investigating the disappearance of two young women who went missing from casinos during the week van der Sloot was in Bogota before going to Peru
The article is in Spanish. The headline says, “Two women disappeared in Colombia during van der Sloot’s stay in that country."
“What did he do in the neighbor country? The same as here. Visiting casinos. Nevertheless, his stay coincided with the disappearance of two young Colombian women, who were also regular visitors of exclusive casinos."
Pretty soon he’s going to be responsible for the oil spill in the Gulf, too!
According to his dutch lawyer he only confessed because he is afraid of the interegation techniques. From what I read it isn’t clear whether he is just scared of them or whether he actually has been interrogated already.
Also, the latest sequence of events is that they went to the hotel room to play more online poker (after the girl had won about 5000 euros in the casino) and went on his computer while he was getting drink/food; appearantly someone put up something on Joran’s facebook about the Holloway case and this made the girl (who was snooping around on his laptop) freak. So when he came back she confronted him and appearantly (Joran’s words) hit him first, he then hit back a number of times and eventuall broke her neck. Some reports say this was due to a hit on the neck, while others say he strangled her after the first couple of hits.
As has been said before, this is just the latest thing joran has chose to admit to and it wouldn’t surprise me if he (or the autorities) changed it another 20 times in the next week. Joran has sort of gotten a reputation of confessing to things that can proven not to have happened…even if it were self incriminating confessions. For instance, it wouldn’t surprise me if it came out that there were no signs of strangulation or something to that effect.

And the Peruvians have a tape of him entering a hotel room with the victim, then leaving without her. Short of an actual videotape of him committing murder, it’s harder to think of more slam-dunk evidence.

Latest news is that the FBI paid van der Sloot $25,000 as part of their investigation into his alleged extortion attempt of Natalie Holloway’s mom.
Even if it is standard practice to give thousands of dollars to a suspect, I think it would have been more useful for the Fibbies to just flush that twenty-five large down a toilet. Anyone who knew Thing 1 about van der Sloot would have known the chances of him telling the truth on Holloway were zero, and thus it proved:

I don’t think the FBI actually expected to gain any information on her whereabouts - I think the plan was to bust him on the extortion attempt on her mother, but the charges for the extortion didn’t come fast enough.
