Vanilla’s comments are her choice. If you want to believe that they are ignorant, then so be it. that is your choice, and I am not here to argue that.
I do not believe in Vanilla’s philosophy regarding Harry Potter, but the fact that she researched what it was and then made her judgement, is commendable. also the fact that she is not trying to lobby other parents to stop their children reading Harry Potter is commendable also.
She has done her research, and made a judgement call based upon that research for her children. That is responsible parenting.
also, may I strongly suggest to Vanilla to give the Narnia chronicles a chance. They are some of the greatest childrens literature ever written.
Fenris, never thought you’d defend me. Yes, I will check out C.S.Lewis. I read every day, can’t help myself.
As stated long ago, (I beleive it was a thread I started called Harry Potter Antichrist Jr.) I never said any books should be banned.
I beleive the Potter books promote an interest in the occult, which I believe is evil. Notice I said I, not everyone.
I have already taught my son (only one kid) this, that dabbling in spells, etc. is evil. I am allowed to teach him this.
I have never advocated banning any book, as I had already stated. Harry Potter has every right to be in every library in the world.
My son never asked to read it; he has seen the promo’s for the movie manny times, never asked to see it.
My former church is actually having a series on HArry Potter, why Evil this Sunday. I may not be able to go. If not, I will get a casette tape of it and if anyone is interested, will send it to them to see why us “fundies” think this way.
I believe Monty was the one being uncivil.
On a former thread, he did call me a bitch, accuses me often of being a “venom-spewer”, as has another Mormon (is that a common phrase by the way? never heard it used by anyone else).
I did say I beleived with the statement of faith on Chick’s page, not the man himself.
When I said I read the Bible, Monty chimes in to say “You read it, but I study it.”
Obviously, No proof is provided for this arrogant statement.
Pride goeth before a fall.
vanilla, I want to say that I really respect the way you remain civil at all times. I’ve never read a post by you that was uncouth or venomous, even in the face of such hateful things as Lucki Chaarms was saying.
Upon further review, I don’t believe that vanilla is a bitch, either. She seems civil and rational. Hell, I didn’t even read the Harry Potter thread. I only posted because of the obligitory South Park reference originally posted by gobear. Vanilla, if you were insulted in any way by me, I apologize.
I, also, disagree with LC’s OP. Vanilla’s view of fantasy books differs from mine, but unanimity of opinion makes for a dull ol’ world. IMHO, LC owes Vanilla an apology.
And I guess I should apologize to Sheila Broslovski, Kyle’s mom. [sub]but she did start that war with Canada, got Terence and Phillip killed, and let Saddam Hussein and Satan out of Hell[/sub]
Hmmm…is vanilla a resident of the US? Last time I checked, we have something called “The First Amendment.” You know, freedom of religion and all that. So vanilla believes Harry Potter goes against her religion, as is her right. I say give it a rest. She’s made up her mind and it appears that she is not about to change her opinion. My own mom has some strange notions; for instance, once when two of our cats had kittens she wouldn’t let the kittens outside without supervision. She was afraid if one went too close to the road, a stranger would grab it and take it to a lab for unspeakable experiments.
techchick: Well, I seem to be somewhat conservative in matters of religion, but I’ll have you know I am the only non-republican church goer I know IRL, but am also and have been for 30 years a Yippie.
Apparently, it’s not that you can’t see the difference. It’s just that you seem to be selectively functionally illiterate.
Except, of course, for that whole “from your comments on this issue” remark I made in connection with it (that would be the comment I just quoted in this post).
Monty and Vanilla: You’re supposed to live the Bible, not just study or read it.
Luke 6:35
Matthew 5:38-39
I Corinthians 13:1-2
Do you really need a Hell-bound sinner like me to point out the lack of charity and goodwill in your arguments are a disgrace to the Body of Christ (or Branch of Ephraim)?
Just agree to disagree, you two, and knock off the petty bickering. All you two are called upon to do is from Micah 6:8
Be nice to each other, pray, and be a good example of God’s grace working in your lives to us heathen.
While avoiding the whole Vanilla/Monty thing, I gotta say that I don’t see any difference between
“(Vanilla) read it, but (Monty) studies it”
and
“(Vanilla) reads the thing, but (Monty) studies it.”
What am I missing? Or are the key words “this issue” implying that it’s not the Bible that’s being talked about at all? If that’s the case, I see Monty’s point.
