Did anyone understand what was going on with Wallace and handing an envelope to the professor at the end? I thought the implication was clearly that the guy selling him a “study guide” was in fact selling him a copy of the test… but then what happened?
As for the rapist, maybe Claire (is that her name) wasn’t raped at all, but just faked it in order to try to strengthen the women’s political position, and cast doubt on that frat?
I figured that meant Wallace let the prof know what was going on.
I think Wallace got busted for having his answers be a little too good. That might cause him to lose his scholarship too. Sure they guy selling the questions and answer keys SAYS they’re merely study guides – he’s covering his own ass. It’s kind of like when bong shops sell “water pipes” and post signs saying they are for legal tobacco use only.
I don’t know what Claire’s deal is since she lied about not knowing the guy in the ATM photo. I’m beginning to subscribe to the theory that one or more of the militant feminists are involved in the rapes, but I don’t know exactly how.
Richard Grieco looks like waxy hell these days.
Alert! There’s been a Richard Grieco sighting! Ah, fond memories of being in college and watching 21 Jump Street. Or not.
Was it just me, or did the dialogue seem crisper and funnier in this week’s episode than any other this season? I know having Weevil and Lamb in the picture always brings out the snark, but I found myself enjoying the riffs much more last night. Very encouraging, if they keep it up.
I don’t think Wallace got busted. I think he busted himself. We know Wallace is a smart kid; if he was really cheating, he wouldn’t have gotten up and turned in his test so early. He would have made it seem like he took the whole two hours to come up with the answers. I think he passed the teacher a note telling the full story. Remember last year’s story, with the incident in Chicago. “What kind of man were you planning on being?” We know Wallace’s character, that he plays it lawful in the end. I can’t imagine he just flat out cheated. Beyond that, though, what struck me was how his side of the storyline played out all alone. In the past Roni would have been there for Wallace in that sort of vexing situation. Now she’s so distracted by multiple mystery problems that she’s not there for her best friend. That could have plot ramifications down the line.
I was unclear what exactly Dean Begley Jr. and his wife did to Grieco’s character to make him donate the marrow. Knock out and kidnap? Doesn’t seem like their style (or ability). At least dude got a hot car in exchange for his marrow.
Lots of face time for Backup this week.
Speaking of face, what the hell did Francis Capra have all over his face? I don’t remember him looking so cratered on the cheeks before. Are they running him through an industrial washing machine before each day’s taping?
The rape storyline is just too muddled for me. But I’m just trying to be very Zen about it and let it play out on its own. I’ll catch up at the end.
All in all, a strong episode. I dug it.
Yeah, Weevil looked like he was beaten up. Maybe Francis Capra is having a really bad acne flare-up. With that and his sudden weight gain, maybe he ought to see a doctor and get his thyroid checked or something.
I dozed off and missed the ep. And then read the nutshell recap on TWoP and wept bitter tears at missing it.
Clearly, Otto needs a TiVo.
By the way, does anyone know if the actor who plays Cliff has actually done voiceovers for Olive Garden commercials? He has tons of voiceover credits, but I wonder if we’re missing an inside joke.
Also, I give up: what was Logan’s Halloween costume? I know Veronica went as Archie Comics’ Veronica, but Logan didn’t appear to be following that theme.
There is no way in hell that a hospital would harvest bone marrow unless the donor had signed multiple consent forms. Maybe they just got his attention & then bribed him heavily. Infectious disease testing takes time, too. Grieco’s character didn’t look like he practiced safe anything. Bone marrow transplantation is not a 100% miracle cure, either.
Griping aside, I enjoyed the episode.
Jeez, I almost forgot that Cliffy was in the house last night, too! Yet another welcome appearance. The ep would have been just about right if Mac had made an appearance, too.
Did anyone else notice that the guy playing the stuck up TA is the same one who played Lucky, the disturbed Iraq war vet last season? They just put a beard on him and gave him more coherent dialogue. I assume that’s just familiar casting and not anything plot significant. Right?
I heard they just liked that actor and wanted to use him again.
They mentioned the doctor doing the harvesting was a relative of the wife’s. I’ll agree it is still a very big stretch but there was something passing as an explanation in there.
I think we saw more of Backup tonight then we’ve seen him in any episode before.
I’ve always liked Cliff, and I liked the scenes of him hanging out with Keith and just being a buddy. If this show has an ongoing flaw, it has been that Keith has always had much less social capital than a man his age should. He has had girlfriends, but we haven’t seen him have a friend.
How could it possibly have anything to do with the plot?
Egad no! She was Ann Marie (played by Marlo Thomas) aka “That Girl” (besides, Veronica Lodge never worn a turtle neck)
I think the clue to Logan’s costume is in how he greeted Veronica, but it was too quick for me to identify.
Also, your theory that Claire’s rape was staged makes sense. In the ep where the Feminazi’s were on the radio show with the Free Press guys, the paper’s headline singled Claire out as a target as a joke (so the press boys said) and the call the Feminazi’s got was “you bastards! Claire was raped!” or words to that effect. I wouldn’t put it past them, to frame the frat boys; but whoever said it in a previous VM thread, these gals are SO anachonistic. I was in college in the late 70s, and this brand of militant feminism was very popular (“A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle” is from that era) Perhaps they are exhibiting a rare form of nostalgia?
Does anyone know who played the beefy blonde college cop, the one who did the robbery? I checked at IMDB, nothing. He’s real familiar and it’s driving me nuts.
Hospitals tend to have lots of “rules.” Did the relative/doctor run the tests in the lab himself–just like the MD’s on “House”?
An extremely big stretch…
(Yeah, quibble, quibble.)
It’s not really MY theory, but one I’ve heard elsewhere that might make sense. And it wasn’t that any of the rapes were staged, but that they actually happened and may have been perpetrated by a woman. It’s not impossible, and I believe they said that no DNA evidence had been found so they assumed the rapist was using condoms.
I went to college in the mid-to-late’90s, and there were militant feminists then, as there are now. An old college friend who stayed in academia and is now a professor herself says it’s still around. I imagine having a serial rapist terrorizing a campus for nearly a year would tend to galvanize the college’s militant feminists too.
Huh? How would that be so out there? VM has a lot of soap opera elements to it–the idea of Lucky having a dead identical twin who blames Roni for his death is not so off the wall. Though I admit, he’s not exactly disguised very well.
Nor do I remember this show re-casting actors like that before.
do we know for sure it’s the same actor? could be, like all the blonde freshamn we’ve seen this season, the two actors just look alike
Answering my own question, in case anyone else cares – the college cop was played by Blake Shields, who was in Sleeper Cell and Carnivale.
I wasn’t sure on the costumes either, but my husband is sure that Veronica and Logan were supposed to be Meg and Jack White of the White Stripes.
