I like plain and I LOVE those waffle machines motels have now. I’ve actually considered getting one for at home.
Either/or both. Also, because my parents were effin’ weird and insisted on making their waffles with Jiffy corn muffin mix (no, really), I naturally assume waffles should taste like sweet cornbread.
This, from a guy who grew up where Waffle House #1 was located. The pecan waffle has been on the menu since day 1.
Waffle Poll?
Sorry, I can’t make up my mind.
There was a severe lack of butter mentioned in the poll choices so I settled for the first one. Waffles need real maple syrup which has been warmed in the microwave with a dollop of butter in it. The syrup has to be carefully poured so that each square is equally filled.
There wasn’t an option for this:
When I was a kid, my mother made waffles from scratch every third Saturday or so and, somehow, she got half the stack to be flimsy and the best way to eat waffles was to cover the one side with jelly and roll them into a tube. Yowzah!
Of course, here in Texas  , all the waffle irons make them in the shape of Texas.
I just like waffles. Plain, buried, stuff baked in–I only draw the line if there’s stuff I specifically dislike in the pile. (No coffee in my waffle and no grapefruit on top, thank you.)
Everyone’s entitled to their own tastes, but you hate maple syrup? Log Cabin and its ilk are gross, but I didn’t know it was possible to hate real maple syrup. Food of the gods, I tell you.
But yeah, you’re entitled to your own tastes. Heathen.
Infovore, I got your back. I don’t like syrup either (unless it’s Mrs. Butterworth). Waffles get lots of butter and that’s it. Ditto for french toast. Not a huge pancake fan but if there’s the right syrup (see above) I’ll put it on. Pancakes. Only.
as delightful as blueberries taste they are a danger to a hasty waffle or muffin eater.
I’m the complete opposite. Maybe it’s because you actually have to make them yourself that turns me off. But they’re too yeasty for me.
Somewhere between “plain with (butter and) syrup” and “toss a couple of blueberries in there too”. And I want the blueberries IN the waffle, like a pancake. None of this piled on top crap ;). It does make a bit of a crime scene of the waffle maker, I’m afraid.
And HOT. Cold waffles are sad.
Actually, I recently made cornbread waffles topped with chili. A whole waffle was too much, but it was really good. I want to try the cornbread version with some butter and comb honey. It’s like a really crispy tender corn muffin donut…

100% plain. With nothing. Not even butter.
Every other weekend I make a batch of Belgian waffles (with yeast, etc.) from scratch. Then at work I’ll heat one up in the microwave in a plastic bag with little a water sprinkled in to keep it from drying out.
If you make real Belgian waffles from scratch you don’t need to put anything on them–not even butter.
I voted “pile that stuff on” even though what I really like is a plain batter with just vanilla ice cream, maybe some sliced banana. No syrup, though, so not the first option.
In general, I use plain batter with 100% maple syrup at home, though I’m open to strawberries and cream when I’m eating out (though I rarely order them).
Glad to see that I’m not the only one that likes peanut butter on waffles (with real maple syrup)!
And gigi, did you grow up in southern Ohio? I had a friend as a kid who filled every divot with syrup. My family gave him grief about it until we lost touch.
A real Belgian waffle with strawberries and cream is good for dessert. In Cincinnati there’s a place called Taste of Belgium that makes a fantastic dessert waffle. I think they were on Diners, Dives and Drive-thrus. (or is it Dives, Drive-thrus and Diners? Drive-thrus, Diners and Dives?)
I’m rather a fan of a Belgian waffle with whipped cream and vanilla ice cream, mmmm!
There are actually several types of waffles in Belgium. The Brussels waffel is a rather sad, dry thing. The Liège waffle is greasier (yummy) with crunchy bits of sugar inside.
For my part, cinnamon waffles bring back memories of childhood. I used to love, love, love them. Just typing this makes me hungry and I’m not a “sweet food” guy. Sadly, I haven’t had one in decades.
So, it’ll be a cinnamon-flavoured Liège waffle for me. Whipped cream is a welcome option but nothing else on top (maple syrup is intriguing, though). Thus, I fall somewhere between options 2 and 3.
Non-Belgian. Plain, flat-ish old fashioned batter waffles, served warm, with butter, peanut butter, and maple syrup. Yum!
