That was the first ingredient!
My mother used to put SCM in her coffee. Then one time she kept getting sick, and she thought it was due to some kind of bug*. Well, eventually she finished the can and cut the lid off to recycle it…and it was all moldy inside. shudder After that, she started using half and half.
This guy tried the salad and said it was a gloppy mess. I still want a Doper to try it though. Double dog dare!!!
[sub]*And no, she didn’t go to the doctor. My mother could be bleeding from her eyeballs, and you’d have to drag her to the doctor. I once asked her if she had ever had a mamogram (she’s sixty) and she said, “no, I’m not a hypochondriac!” That’s her thing – anything other than a routine check up means you’re a hypochondriac.[/sub]
It’s all the sugar that turns me off. I would definitely taste it though . A taste won’t kill me, right?
I once ate potato salad that was the best. The secret ingredient…sugar.
I’ll make it if you eat it.
no way in hell I’m putting that shit in my mouth but I’ll happily put the bullet in the camber and give it a spin for any volunteers who want to take it from there.
It’s goopy because there’s too much ‘dressing’. but that’s because pasta absorbs dressing like a sponge. After a day in the refrigerator, you’d have to cut a piece off with a knife.
Well, I like sweet and sour, I like vinegar, mayonnaise AND sugar but bloody hell that recipe is insane. What a waste of ingredients - the mayo alone would last me a month or more.
Oh, and I was wrong – my mother actually used evaporated milk in her coffee. (It still went bad, though)
Wouldn’t that also be a pretty expensive dish, using all that mayo?
I love the way she says, “stir until it’s corporated” instead of incorporated. It looks like she is making fudge until she adds the vinegar.
Hey, yeah! You know what that recipe needs?
Chocolate!
Are y’all familiar with Snickers Salad?
Coffee in Vietnam is usually made by putting a tiny drizzle of SCM in the bottom of a cup, then placing a little coffee filter over the top for strong coffee to drip onto it. It’s gorgeous.
Man, that looked disgusting. Wouldn’t putting hot pasta straight into the dressing cause the mayonnaise to turn? Or is that an old wives tale?
Turn what? Into a werewolf?
Again, a sweet and sour dressing isn’t inherently bad - even one with a moderate amount of fat. My grandmother would serve lettuce from her garden with green onions and a hot dressing. She made this by cooking some bacon, crumbling that into the salad, and then mixing sugar, cider vinegar and pepper with a small quantity of the hot bacon grease.
All told, though, this made less than a cup of dressing that then fed about 20 people.
Very happy people.
Maybe it’s just a Southern thing. The only thing I see wrong with this is the proportions. Comfort food is just really popular here I guess… I grew up seeing this kind of thing at every Sunday family get-together and community picnics back when I was a child.
Also, I saw mayo, vinegar, and sweetened condensed milk added to a lot of different things too so that didn’t bother me at all. I don’t cook with that stuff now because I’m not one for comfort food anymore but growing up I saw it all the time.
I agree. This kind of thing is why Southern states have the highest rates of obesity in the country. You just need to add some fried chitterlings or something.
I am very curious about who SimplySara is as a person and what her life has been like. I do feel bad for her since I imagine that having the video mocked all over the internet was incredibly embarrassing (unless maybe it was concocted as some kind of joke all along, which is possible).
No, that’s no joke. No way.
I feel awful for her, though - she’s probably a very nice person.
Check AllRecipes or any of the other big recipe aggregator websites for “Hawaiian Macaroni Salad.” Sara didn’t invent this recipe, or the idea of using SCM in a salad dressing and in fact, her version is actually better than some of the ones out there for the ratio of sugar & SCM to pasta.
It’s in remarkably bad taste for people to speculate so significantly about this woman, her health (which we know nothing about) or anything else about her based upon her appearance in these cooking videos. Remarkably. Her body is not yours to police.
I couldn’t agree more.
No, the south has the highest obesity rates because it has the highest poverty rates. Their tastes in pasta salad is irrelevant.
