We Got a Dog

The cats are ok with him, so he gets to stay. It’s amazing that a dog just under a year old can be so chill. Jack is supposedly a Lab/Shepherd mix, but there was a dog at the dog park that looked just like him. That dog is, according to his person, a black mouth cur. Who knows; he’s a good dog. Right now he’s also a tired dog.

Yep. Black mouth cur is a name Shelters give dogs that look a bit shepherd-y and may or may not have a black mouth. It’s a catch-all term.

And a Terrier ain’t gonna gonna be a cute little Yorkie. It’s most likely a Pit or Staffy terrier mix.

But…all that don’t matter. Your doggy is who he is.
I hope he stays chilly. And all goes easy peasy.

Name?
Pix?

Cannot wait to hear your new adventures.

(Oh, I see Jack in the post, now)

Pictures! We need pictures!!

Lab and Shepherd are both terrific breeds. This pup is likely to be a winner.

Did I mention that we need pics?

I forgot how to post pics.

Me too. @wolfpup can help.

Just go to https://imgur.com/upload and upload the image. The thing that many posters forget is the second step – right-click on the image and navigate to something like “show image in a new tab” – may vary depending on browser. Then post the link with the “.jpeg” extension.

Congratulations, @P-man ! To post pics, I load them at Flickr, provide a link here. I’m looking forward to seeing Jack!

It kind of squashed him

Truth: a tired dog is a good dog.

[/quote] Where I grew up if a short haired dog of undetermined origin was small to medium sized, it was a feist.

If you click on the picture you can see it normal.

Yes Feist is a common name for a smallish terrier-type. I had a Rat Terrier that my Vet always called a Feist, because he just loved that type of dog.

Fifteen years ago we adopted the World’s Mellowest Dawg. Rita was a year old and just getting over kennel cough. Two months later, completely recovered, she was a demi-hellion. We loved her but felt snookered.

One thing I’ve noticed with our shelter dogs is that it takes a few days for their personality to come out. The first few days they are decompressing from being in the shelter. After a while they feel comfortable being themselves.

If you want to know more about what breeds he might be, you can do a DNA test. We did one through https://embarkvet.com/. We did it on our shelter dogs and found it enlightening.

He didn’t come from a shelter. Someone found him and the rest of the litter when they were around three months old. He lived with her until he was ten months old, and then lived a month with a foster family. He was calm with everyone. The rest of the litter exhibited regular puppy behavior. The pups also looked extremely different, including one that looked like a pure bred lab. Obviously his momma got around.

Whatever Jack is, just be kind and consistant and calm til you know just how he is.

He’ll undoubtedly have some idiosyncraties that alarm you. Then training can start.

How did he do over night?

Awww he looks so happy crashed out under the table. Congrats on the new family member!

He’s had some digestive issues, probably from the stress of moving. Monday he will have been with us two weeks, so he’s starting to settle in. We’re meeting with a trainer in Monday; he seems eager to learn. He’s more motivated by love and attention than food so far.

Congratulations, that’s such happy news!

Good dog, Jack!

Good human, P-man!
