From what I am seeing online, this service is massively popular. And the tax preparation companies charge just a nominal $40 or so fee for it in addition to the fees they charge for filing.
And the really sad part is that most of the people who partake of this service would have been eligible to file for no fee at all through theIRS Free File program.
I know that TurboTax provides a free filing option so I don’t think these filers are the group being discussed. This concerns the tax filers who are unable/unwilling to wait a few weeks for their refund to be processed by the IRS. So they take out a loan against their refund (consider this to be similar to PayDay Lenders or in this case TaxRefund Lenders). The preparer provides them with a loan against their refund. When the IRS issues the refund it goes to the company and they take out the $40 loan fee and then refund any additional money to the customer.
The Get My Payment tool is separate from the tool for non-filers- I had to give my name , SS address, and AGI . And then it said they were mailing a check or I could provide bank info
Checked last night. Apparently the bank info has not gone from Vets, SIS, SSDI, SSSI etc. to IRS or treasury or Donald or whoevever is reimbursing funds yet.
Word is “Real soon now”.
I got this message, and I’m pretty sure per the FAQ that it is because I’m not eligible for the payment. I guess the IRS won’t come out and say “you make too much money for the payment” but instead pretend there’s a glitch.
The poor planning is that it seems like for some people, it really is a glitch, and not a poorly phrased way to tell someone they are not eligible.
This is my situation. I can’t see any reason we wouldn’t be eligible. We definitely didn’t make too much money. I checked again this morning and I’m still getting the “Payment Status Not Available” message. We filed both 2018 and 2019 and already received refund via direct deposit so I know the IRS has the correct acct info. I’m not sure what the next step is other than to wait and hope.
Heh. Nonresident citizen who files a paper return. I think it’ll be a while before I can get info off the website, if ever. In the meantime, I’ll get used to seeing “Payment Status Not Available” I’m sure.
The frustrating part is I can’t tell if it’s because of my odd circumstances, or if it’s because I’m not entering the info exactly as they want it, or what.
Basically you should have your 1040 form directly in front of you when you enter the information–to make sure you don’t give a slightly different form of your street address or whatever.
I will look that site when I have something from the IRS in hand. They have a slightly different idea of my address than I do, due how they handle characters with accents and umlauts.
I don’t think we’re eligible, but not sure. I could also ask my accountant, I guess.
No dashes for the SS number - but the IRS may have your address in a different format than you normally use. I often have to use a variant of my address - the way my address is normally written is
XX-YY ZZ ST
MyNeighborhood, NY.
When I look it up on the USPS zip code lookup page, it becomes
XXYY ZZ91ST ST ( no hyphen , ST ST twice, once for “first”, once for “street”)
MyNeighborhood, NY (plus the zip+4 code)
Certain entities ( including the IRS ) will only accept the USPS version.
