Webmasters: Thawte or Verisign?

I need to set up a secure page for ordering from my Web site, and I’m looking at the SSL services offered by Thawte and Verisign.

It looks like Verisign charges $695 for two years of the same basic service that I can get from Thawte for only $259.

Why the difference? Verisign seems to be the better-known brand, but is that the only reason they charge more?

My site is low-volume (maybe a dozen or so transactions a month, max) and each transaction is only about $300. I don’t want to spend more than I need to, so I’m inclined to go with Thawte, unless there’s some significant reason they don’t measure up to Verisign.

Your thoughts or experiences with either? Thanks.

We happen to use Thawte, and are a Thawte reseller (because we had a couple of clients that needed certs) and our choice came down to just being cheaper.

Thawte did have a SEVERELY cumbersome user interface in the beginning but they seem to be improving every year. It might just be because I’m a reseller that it confuses me so much (many certs instead of just one)…I have also never used the Verisign interface.

Their support is fine, as far as support goes. I’ve never had a problem chatting with them online (which is always a nice feature.) I’ve never needed much support though.

We do a lot more volume than you - about $1800-5000/mo and no one has ever complained about it. Our one client that also uses Thawte does about that much a month and he’s fine.

Yes Verisign is way way more prominent but to me at least SSL is SSL, why not get the cheaper one? I’ve always seen it like Network Solutions - people pay a heck of a lot more for the name.

Oh we do not do more volume than you. Mis-read your projection there as $300 total a month. My bad.
