nice pics, FCM, but sorry about all the shoveling. I like the look of pristine piles of snow before street dirt messes everything up
there may have possibly been an earthquake in Connecticut
Morning all - while it’s still morning, that is.
Today is my daughter’s (number one child) 28th birthday. Wheee! happy birthday to her!! We do have cake.
Haven’t heard about work tomorrow, but it would be very surprising if it is open–but we’ll see, I guess. My cousin in Tidewater said she’d heard they would make that decision before the Super Bowl - or that might just be someone’s wishful thinking. LOL My employer is the Federal Government, btw. We’re still digging out in the DC area.
Okay, everyone enjoy your Sunday and the Super Bowl, or whatever else you enjoy. Swampy, even though I’ve just eaten, the thought of those pimento cheese sandwiches made my mouth water, I love em! Hope y’all have a good brunch at church today.
Wow, good luck with digging out of all that snow.
You know, it looks pretty and all, but just wreaks havoc with our daily, busy lives doesn’t it?
The “earthquake” was a power plant explosion. The details are still scant, i.e, other than saying there was an explosion, there was any other information.
We had a good time eating out last night. The food was good, and our chef was entertaining. We went to the Iron Chef which is a restaurant like Bennihanna.
It was slightly spendy though.
We’re supposed to go to our friend’s house to watch the Superbowl today. However, my daughter is supposed to come over too because she and her boyfriend want to borrow my Expedition so they can buy and haul home a dresser. I want to see my daughter because I probably won’t see her all week long. Yes, I know, that’s not a huge time frame, but I gotta take baby steps.
Oooh. Coffee is done. Need to get some.
As of noon, nothing on the quake sheet.
Would it be so wrong to go to the store and then back home while wearing a long winter coat covering a t-shirt and my purple plaid pajama bottoms?
I’ve, like many others, I’m sure, got shoveling lag and as little effort as I can get away with today would be great.
I’ll be at the store with a flipster waiting for your coat to swing open
Power plant blew down the street from Soapy
Damn, that’s a lot of snow, Mooooooooooom!
No snow here, though it’s bloody cold. I went skating down by the lake last night with some friends, and despite the fact that I was bundled up from head to toe in multiple layers, I was still shivering by the time I got home. It’s gorgeously sunny today, tho, and I desperately need the sun exposure to tame the SAD beasties… so I guess I’ll bundle up heavily and go out for a walk.
{{gotti and DH}} Is there anyone he can appeal to? I had a hell of a time getting onto my current project because HR had very strange ideas as to what qualifications mattered, and was turning down perfectly good candidates before the project leadership could even see them. Good thing I knew one of the interviewing managers personally… she threw my resume back on the pile, despite HR’s complaints.
{{Taters}} The fact that she was going to make her bed before leaving is proof that you raised a good one. I know it’s not much, but it’s something, right?
Sending good thoughts Soapy’s way. Hope the power plant thing didn’t affect them.
OK, time to get purtified, bundled up, and outta the house.
Blurg.
Coffee? check
Vacuuming done? check
Goofing off to the Nth degree? check
Explosion in my hometown. Those of you following me on FB may have heard this already.
At about 11:30 this morning a power plant under construction in my medium sized town (about 35K population) exploded. Our house shook and rattled. Up to 30 miles away people felt the explosion. We had no idea what had happened, but thanks to the power of Facebook, in about 20 minutes the news was out.
Over 100 people have been injured, many critically. Two are confirmed dead. All firefighters, EMTs from our town and neighboring ones are on the scene. The fire is out but search and rescue is underway.
From what I hear, the plant has been flattened.
Scary stuff.
ETA: didn’t realize how many of you already posted about this! Thanks for the good thoughts- this has the potential for a lot of loss of life for my smallish town. Many of my students are EMTs and firefighters, so I hope to get more details in class Tuesday.
what kind of power plant was it to be? nuclear? coal?
Gas- I think propane.
We do have a nuc plant in town- it was a frightening moment before we knew which plant it was.
Update: natural gas, not propane.

Today was the first time they spun the plant up. Somethig went wrong in the worst way.
Yeah. I heard that they were testing the high pressure gas lines.
That looks really scary, Soapy. Glad you’re OK.
That’s an AWFUL lot of snow, FCM. I’m impressed that you’ve cleared out as much as you have.
Happy Birthday to **tarra’s **daughter!
I’ve run errands, deheathenated, and now need to get my Valentines together and then maybe do some work. I’ve got some data I need to validate and prettify. I can do that while watching something.
It took about 20 minutes to remove snow from my car. I don’t remember ever having snow actually frozen on in such large quantities. It took some maneuvering to get out of my driveway without either skidding (which would have resulted in me hitting something, there’s maybe one foot clearance on either side of my car as I back out between my house and the neighbors’) or getting stuck.
Off I go to be productive.
Hugs.
GT
Whew!! The driveway is clear. We were down to our last 25’ or so and a neighbor came by on his gator with a blade. It took him about 15 minutes to clear our mailbox and the mess at the bottom of the driveway. He wasn’t going to charge us. We gave him $20. Then we cleared the rest of the front of the garage and quit.
**FCD **is in the shower. Lasagna is in the oven. I get the shower next.
Now, if only Tuesday’s mess doesn’t materialize… I need to call work and see if we’re open tomorrow. The recording is still saying that we’ll be closing at noon on Friday. Tomorrow’s status may go up tonight, but definitely by 5AM tomorrow. Like I care. I’m pretty sure I’m staying home.
Oh my aching back…
who is starting us off tomorrow?
Yikes! Glad to hear you’re okay, Soapy.
We had a brush with something similar in Toronto a couple of summers ago, when a propane storage facility blew up… we were lucky, though, in that there were only two fatalities and that the houses in the immediate area weren’t damaged too badly (aside from a lot of broken windows). I can’t imagine how devastating the damage would be when it’s an entire power plant as opposed to a storage facility.
I’m making lasagna too, Mooooom! Completely from scratch, because I’m crazy like that. Well, except the cheese… we decided to buy that pre-made. But the sauce, the noodles and the pesto, that’s all being made the hard way.
Why yes, I am a masochist.
