My favorite configuration is {sofa, kitties, tv, with volume set to “murmur”}. Last weekend, though, I resorted to {bed, kitties, no tv}. But that was after a 3-mile walk with the dog, and while the husband had the tv on something I didn’t want to hear. Sports set to “murmur” is the bestest for sleeping!
And I’m doing nothing this weekend, too, so I’ll share the burden of vicarious relaxation with you, if you like.
Another generous offer – one I am happy to accept immediately. Thank you.
My preferred TV background is the Saturday afternoon how-to lineup on the local PBS station – cooking shows that segue into New Yankee Workshop, This Old House, et al. I usually wake up in time for Lawrence Welk, which is perfect for one’s post-nap-but-I’m-not-ready-to-move-yet daze.
Being retired each day is much of a muchness, apart from Sunday, I love Sunday.
I kick off with a full English breakfast, eggs (2) bacon, sausage, mushrooms, toms, black pudding, beans and toast.
2 cups strong black coffee. A butchers at the newspapers before taking a long soak.
Shave, then it’s orf to the jolly old boozer for a few pints of falling down water and a natter with the other old codgers plus a leer at the barmaid/s.
Taxi home after scoffing lunch at the pub, slip into scruff, lounge on sofa, stroke cat, fall asleep.
I feel like doing nothing, but my husband wants to go see his friend tonight, and since I haven’t seen him in forever either, I kind of feel like I should go. The thing is, he lives an hour and a half away, and I just don’t feel like going. Maybe by this evening, but right now? Nah.
So I’m going to veg all day, and see how I feel about joining them later. I’ve had a really crazy, busy week, and I finally got all caught up last night (yep, doing Calculus homework on a Friday night is my idea of fun!), and I think I just haven’t shaken that stress off yet. I slept in (very) late this morning, and I’m already thinking about taking a nap! Maybe once I get through MPSIMS…!
Slept in this morning, read my email, thought about responding to any one of the three that call for a response, decided against it. Read the Boards for a while. Took a shower. Straightened up the bedroom a little (put away some clothes, no actual cleaning). Had a nice bowl of granola and yogurt. Laid on the sofa and read. Took a nap – a lonnnnnnng nap. Woke up, let the cats back in (they’d been romping in the backyard), fired up the computer, checked the mail – got the new Entertainment Weekly, a CD I’d ordered on a Doper recommendation in the sax thread, and a check for $80 for some freelance work I’d done a couple of months ago. Sitting here eating cold pizza and reading the Dope with a purring cat in my lap.
This is my Saturday afternoon when I’m not roaming the library (where I am now)!. I look those cooking shows and house renovation shows. You must have Philly’s version of WLIW (Garden City, LI).
On free weekend afternoons, I love to lounge/doze on the sofa with the TV on; I can be lulled into a nap with it on low volume, wake up to something serendipitous, or have a TV show woven into my dreams.
I am also so looking forward to a midnight showing of Withnail & I, which I’ve heard so much talk about over the years and now have my first chance to see it. (Thanks for the heads up, The Scivener.) Until then, I’ll be halfheartedly doing some tidying up around the house and reading (well, mostly reading).
I’m completely jealous - we’ve been cleaning and baking pies today. My family has Thanksgiving tomorrow - so its up there (with the pies). We are having people to our house on Thanksgiving itself - so I need to clean. I graduate (at the ripe old age of 41) in December - and between now and then I have four papers to write and a final to study for. Two of the papers are group projects and my group is made up of idiots - so I was revamping a group project this morning. I’m getting rid of the 4.0 quite tidily this semester - I may manage an A in one class, but my group has completely blown in it class two, and I just can’t pick them up and shoulder the whole project - no time. But I graduate with a C - and I’m not worried about not getting that. After Thanksgiving, Brainac4 has his birthday - with his annual birthday party - 40 people descending on my house. Then get the tree up, cookies baked, gifts purchased and wrapped - and Christmas done. And Brainiac4 will be working approximately 700 hours per week between now and New Years - he works for a major ecommerce site.
Update: Just watched two fairly shitty movies (French Kiss – which reminds me, yet again, that I don’t care for Meg Ryan. Plus I kept waiting for it to be revealed that the Kevin Kline character wasn’t actually French – and Broadway Melody of 1940 – which reminds me, yet again, that Fred Astaire + Eleanor Powell + Cole Porter score doesn’t necessarily add up to much of anything) and knit, with kitties lounging close by but not actually interfering with yarn or needles.

[li]Ran two miles.[/li][li]Cleaned up in prep for the house being shown from 10 to noon.[/li][li]Bagged nine bags of leaves (on top of the eight bags from last Sunday). The nine bags from this morning were all from the front yard. I didn’t have time to get to the back yard.[/li][li]Stuffed my car with eight bags of leaves and hauled them to our recycle place, where they have to be completely emptied.[/li][li]Started Christmas shopping since I couldn’t go home until after noon.[/li][li]Came home, loaded up the car with the other nine bags of leaves and hauled them to the recycle place.[/li][li]Came home again, and mowed the back yard simply to mulch more leaves so I don’t have to bag 20 more bags tomorrow (before the open house).[/ul][/li]
Oh and my car’s brake light and ABS light came on. The neighbor who is also a mechanic said yep I need new brakes and that should make the pesky lights go off.
I’d like a drink, but I have a purring kitty on my lap who would prefer I not move.
Tonight my 14 year-old son went to a formal dance… with a girl!! A while back I’d posted a thread wherein I speculated upon his sexuality and worried (not that I wouldn’t love and accept him if he was gay, I would). While it’s not the final answer by any means, it’s something. And he was so handsome in his tuxedo. At almost 6 feet tall and 125 pounds, he cuts a dashing figure. A stick figure.
We did end up going to see my husband’s friend. We just hung out and talked, had a bit of wine… basically what I would have done at home anyways, so that was good. Got back home at about 2am, and slept in late again today. Now I’m just reading the boards, having just finished a mug of hot chocolate, and watching a football game (I have no loyalty to any given team, but I do enjoy watching the sport!)
I am contemplating making an apple pie, and maybe a loaf of banana bread, but the laziness might win out. I plan on calling my sister later in the day, and maybe doing some cleaning… but probably not!
