I’m obviously going to start with George Carlin since Netflix has a large selection of his shows, although I’m burned out on Baseball vs Football. What else would you recommend? It can be classic or some modern comedian that I’ve never heard of. I’ve also got Amazon Prime so that’s an option as well.
Bill Burr has a rather large number of shows on Netflix. He’s the best comedian working today IMO.
Anything from Jim Jefferies, and if any Doug Stanhope is on there, definitely, though he seems to have made it in the UK/Europe, much more than his native states.
All of John Mulaney’s specials are great. It looks like they only have two of Patton Oswalt’s specials on there, but “Annihilation” is absolutely amazing (and heartbreaking).
We watched the newest Bill Burr show last week. I laughed out loud numerous times.
We also like to watch:
Jim Gaffigan
John Mulaney
Chris Rock
We’ve watched and then stopped after a few minutes of watching a few others. I hate when the whole act is too political. There is so much of that everywhere you turn these days that a comedy act about it just about sends me over the edge.
I forgot one…
Sebastian Maniscalco
Kathleen Madigan
Lewis Black
Brad Williams
Comedian specials from the 80s and 90s (Carlin, Williams, Goldberg, Crystal, Murphy) haven’t aged well for me, but I would like to check out the Comic Relief specials if they’re available anywhere.
I watched a bunch during the month I had Netflix and my favorite was Bert Kreischer, Secret Time.
These are all great:
Louis CK
Dave Chappelle
Tom Segura
Brian Regan
Ron White
Marc Maron: Too Real was really good.
Still, I’ll never forget back in college, the professor was so impressed that everyone in the class got a B or higher on the midterm that he spent the last half of class showing a Whoppi Goldberg comedy special. This was a night class from 6-9 PM. Definitely one of my best memories from college coming back from the 7:30 pm break and watching a comedy video and finally getting over the stress of midterms.
Anthony Jeselnik’s special is side-splitting if you like his style of extremely dark comedy.
I’ll also second the John Mulaney special.
We like Gabriel Iglesias (Fluffy).
I’ll also recommend Todd Barry, who has a unique and understated style, IMO.
Jeselnik is very funny, but also a one trick pony. I found myself guessing all the punchlines before he delivered them halfway through his specials.
I’ll join the chorus on Mulaney, Burr, and Segura. Ali Wong is funny as well. I’ve found Chappelle’s newer material to be pretty hit or miss.
Burr has always been one of my favorites, but I got through a half hour of the latest one and didn’t even chuckle.
Have you watched his most recent one (Fire in the Maternity Ward)? IMO, it’s really a step up for him, maybe a huge step up. I found it distinctly funnier than anything else he’s done.
Bartgatze also has his own Netflix special, which I found slightly above average. But his Standups show I found as funny as any routine I can recall ever seeing. Best part is, you’ll know in the first five minutes whether his comedic style and content fits your taste.
Yeah. I’ve only seen his two Netflix specials and I watched them on consecutive nights. I think his jokes are really good, it’s just that they tend to all basically have the same delivery and format.
Just watched that on your recommendation (on Netflix), and was impressed. I did take a nap in the middle (had a long day at work today) but strong writing and I rarely saw the punchline in advance.
