What did you do this weekend?

Mother’s Day is today. I don’t have a mother, so I don’t have anything planned. The weekend is pretty much like any other.

Yesterday I surfed the 'Net and drank a pot of coffee. Then I had more coffee. We went down to the nursery, and bought three rosemary plants about 8" tall. They’re supposed to have blue flowers when they bloom. I got out the pickaxe and a shovel, hacked through some roots that were hidden underground, and planted two of the rosemary plants in the front yard by the fence. The SO re-potted the other one and brought it into the house because it smells good. And we can pick on it for cooking. We also stopped by the hardware store, and I bought a new rake.

When my friend bought this house, he bought a couple of those plastic Adirondack-style chairs. Nearly a decade after buying the house from him, the chairs are still here. Their arms are starting to crack. The SO wanted to go to Rite-Aid to look at their hanging plants. They had these metal-framed chairs with mesh seats and backs that were pretty comfortable. They had one brown one, and three stacks of day-glo ones. We didn’t like the bright ones, and we need two chairs; so we didn’t buy any. Upon returning home, we decided to go to the next town over to see if they had chairs. If we need them, we may as well take advantage of the sale. They didn’t have them, but they had a ‘bistro set’ of two metal-framed chairs with cushions, and a glass-topped table on sale for $80 – plus a $10 rebate we can use any time in the next 14 days. Who buys patio furniture from Rite-Aid? Not my first choice. But they were cheap, we needed to replace the plastic chairs, and they’re actually pretty well made. We stopped at Bass on the way home so the SO could buy some T-shirts and shorts for Summer.

We unpacked the bistro set, and the SO started putting it together while I made dinner. I had beans simmering all day. She has a different idea of how to make refried beans than I do, so she was incredulous when I strained off the liquid. She didn’t know that I had a bowl under the colander so that I could add it back in if needed. I toasted some rice, and chopped up a bunch of stuff for Spanish rice. Earlier, I put a couple of mahi mahi fillets in a zip-top bag with olive oil, freshly-chopped cilantro, a couple of cloves of crushed garlic, lemon juice, lime juice, Mexican chili powder, and salt. With the beans mashed and the rice simmering, it was time to fire up the barbie. I’d mentioned the other day that we need to get charcoal. The SO pointed out the bag on the patio, which I hadn’t seen. I should have bought charcoal. There was only a little bit left. Too late to do anything about it, so I made do. It took a little longer than normal to cook the fish, but cooked it was. And delicious. The SO said so. (She also liked the refried beans and the rice.) Too bad I forgot we have avocados, which I had planned to slice up and serve with the meal.

Today? I got nuttin’. We’ll watch Game of Thrones and Survivor, but until then I guess it’s just relaxing and listening to the rain.

Yesterday I had brunch with a friend of mine from high school, who I hadn’t seen in about 40 years. His wife also, who I’d never met. Came home and watched the last two episodes of Project Runway season 5. (I’m in the middle of a marathon binge re-watch of all 10 seasons prior to watching season 11.) I then wrote about half of an assignment that’s due today, but knocked off and watched the first two eps of PR season 6.

Set the alarm to get up and finish the writing assignment (getting it in a solid half hour before deadline). I have work to do for a different client, but am thinking I’ll do that tonight while watching the Survivor finale, since it doesn’t require full attention. That would mean this afternoon is open for either some housecleaning or watching a little PR and knitting … what to do, what to do.

Yesterday I had a lazy morning, and then helped a friend move in the afternoon (which, in practice, amounted to me keeping her company while she packed). In the evening, hubby and I had some spicy peri-peri chicken at Nandos, and then watched The Great Gatsby.

Today we’ll visit hubby’s family for a Mother’s Day get together, and then I’ll go shopping for a maternity suit. We’ll probably have a quiet evening, maybe getting some shopping done and put in a load of laundry. I’ll call my mom in the evening.

The weather has finally warmed up, and I’m loving the sunshine (even if there is also a little rain.)

While I was waiting for the SO to get her stuff, I was hanging out by the chairs. They had ‘water features’, and one of them looked kind of nice. It was three faux stone rectangular columns of different heights, with a square pool at the bottom. Two hundred dollars, or $100 since it was on sale. We don’t have any exterior outlets, so I was pleased to see the ‘Solar Powered’ tag on it. I didn’t see any photovoltaic cells, so I read the instruction sheet. It said to plug the pump into an electrical socket. There was no mention of solar-powered anything. I asked a clerk about it, and he read the instructions too. He said he’d have to call someone to find out what’s solar powered about it. Personally, I think that whoever manufactured this thing thought that they’d sell more of them if they put a tag on it that said ‘Solar Powered’, even if it’s a blatant falsehood.

Ran errands. Trying to get some work done but I’m fighting a sinus infection and my head hurts a lot and I don’t feel like doing much. Today I’ll try to get some cleaning done in the basement. Have to call my mother later.

Yesterday went to the Titanic museum in Pigeon Forge. Today planning a trip to Aldi and maybe Sam’s Club and making a nice dinner.

Yesterday morning we went to a breakfast buffet so I could eat all the bacon I wanted without having to cook. Then off to the thrift store where I got a small primary-color picture of sunflowers and serving plates and fishing boats glimpsed through the window. Found a little glazed planter to match with a big sunflower on it, for a quarter. Now what to fill it with?

Today is movies, Sunday paper and pizza.

Started packing, since I’m moving in 10 days. Stage 1 yesterday was watching Hoarders to motivate myself while I purged several garbage bags of clothes, books, extra cords/cables, and other random junk I don’t need. At this rate, I’ll *easily *be able to fit everything into one carload. yay

I’ve been hankering for a vintage motorcycle. Technically, my Honda Hawk GT is vintage since the model debuted 25 years ago, but still. So I drove about an hour and a half into the burbs to check out a 1966 Honda 305; I like the look of them and it’s cool (to me) that it’s the bike Pirsig was riding in “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance,” though it’s never stated in the book. We couldn’t agree on a price though. The old story - he wanted “Excellent” money for a running project. I blew a few hours watching old “Teens React” eps on YouTube, and favorite eps of “Never Mind the Buzzcocks.”

Today I’m supposed to meet someone to check out their CB750 but the idea of the Dream 305 is sticking with me. There’s one 300 miles downstate that seems to be in better shape, but that’s 600 miles to look at a bike. So I’ll likely spend the day surfing motorcycle web sites…

Yeah, my mom is across the country. Still alive, but it’s not like I can take her out.

This weekend was like most others: a lot of whiskey, pizza, saw some friends, threw some live comedy into the mix. All around fun. Today I will (probably) clean my apt and watch movies. Actually, I’m more likely going to sweep the living room and kitchen floors, load up the dishwasher, then declare myself done. There are other rooms that need to be addressed and laundry is piling up, but I went shopping last week, so I don’t have to worry about laundry.

Got a deal on an entire lamb shoulder yesterday, so spent most of the day butchering it, making lamb stock, and Merguez (spicy North African lamb sausage). Used some of the bulk sausage that was left over after I ran out of casings to make a sorta-kinda lamb ragu for dinner.

Pretty beat after that, so played Bioshock 2 with a St. Germain Gin & Tonic until bedtime, and then finished my book before going to bed.

This morning I bitched to everyone who would listen about the snow that was on the ground (grrr…), then watched video tutorials on the threading features in .NET 4. Did 45 minutes on the spin bike since I can’t bike outside (because there’s flippin’ SNOW ON THE GROUND ON MAY 11). Next will make some cookies, run to the wine store & library, and end up at my Mom’s house around 4 for Mother’s Day wine happy hour.

Later on will be Game of Thrones and Mad Men. Maybe a roast chicken. We’ll see.

I would love one of those! Not enough to pay what they cost, but still…

I had several chances to get one of those. I ended up with a 1972 CB350. That was in 1974, cost me $300.

And ex-g/f had a '76 Honda CB360T that a friend gave her. Pretty cool ride, though not usable for the type of riding I did at the time.

To tie in motorcycles and weekends, I’d hoped to get my YZF-R1 started. It’s been sitting since last riding season, and I was unable to get it started last weekend. It’s raining today, and my siphon hasn’t arrived yet; so that’s on hold until the next non-rainy weekend. (I want to siphon the old fuel out of the tank, since I suspect water has condensed in it.)

I went to 2 parties. I played a ukulele with an ID card.

My mother has moved away, is in the process of separating from my dad, and we don’t see too much of her, so I’m not doing anything special for Mother’s Day.

Mom hates crowds, so we are taking her to dinner tomorrow. Italian.

Yesterday I spent the morning conducting a full-scale dress rehearsal for my sophomores, who face their first AP exam Wednesday. 3.5 hours of flop-sweat, but they’ll be ready for the real one. Then I came home, had a beer and fooled around with the wife.

Today was a Target run for cat food and various other stuff. Now I’m kicking back with a Screwdriver while the wife makes breakfast: eggs, hashbrowns, sausage, English muffins w/huckleberry jam and probably another Screwdriver.

Live is tough here.

Your mother was an intelligent, competent and wonderful woman Johnny. She was the face and heart of Gibb’s Flying Service to me. I’m sorry she’s not here to enjoy the day with you.

I am with my kids visiting my parents this weekend.

My family has never given a damn about the Hallmark holidays, but just being here has been nice for all. I will pack the kids up in two hours and begin the journey to hand them off to their mom around 6pm, and remind them to tell her “Happy Mother’s Day.”

Other than getting the family boat cleaned up and in the water (with the help of the children - not a whine was heard!) and out on the water for our first boat ride of the year. Next month we can start fishing & crabbing.

Good weekend, especially after how shitty last weekend was…

We went to Mud yesterday in a local theater that I hadn’t been to in over two decades. Great movie, really deserves the near 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Thank you, Morgenstern.
