I always, always, ALWAYS have ChapStick in my left front pocket. I don’t think I own any pants w/o pockets, and I even have a couple of skirts with pockets.
The right front pocket is not so strict – usually a couple of bucks, and often my staff ID card, which also lets me buy things here on campus. Kleenex will also go in there during cold or allergy season (which appears to be year-round for me!). When I’m wearing pants with back pockets, the ID card will go in the back left pocket, with maybe a business card or two, and other miscellaneous flat things. Keys only go in my pocket if absolutely necessary, which is almost never since I usually have my purse nearby. The purse holds everything else, which is about 5 pounds’ worth of stuff.
Right slash coat pocket: Keys, sometimes a pen, other random things (mints, condoms, what have you.)
Right flap coat pocket: My little notebook to write just about anything in.
Left slash coat pocket: Wallet
Left flap coat pocket: Usually nothing, so some random crap does fin it’s way into there from time to time.
Left breast coat pocket: A “National Engineers Week 2000” button, a word of magnetic poetry on the button (“you”,) and one of those mini binder-clips. This pocket is strictly sentimental crap.
Right front pants pocket: Mechanical pencil, pen, eraser, chapstick
Left front pants pocket: Any loose bills or change I might have…I usually don’t have any, though.
Nothing goes in my back pockets, feels too uncomfortable.
It depends. Keys go in right front pocket, and generally everything else is in my purse.
The exception is when I travel, or go out to a place where my purse, or it’s contents, are more likely to disappear, i.e. I know I’ll be walking back to bart through downtown San Francisco at night alone, or I’m at a club with people bumping into me.
In those cases I still carry the purse but move enough cash to get me home and my cell phone (it’s teeny) into my left front pocket. That way if my bag gets grabbed/picked, I’m not completely screwed.
